Oh, one more thing. Our comics read right to left.
The last three pages of Chapter one are available now! Oh, the tears, what have I done?!
Coming up in Chapter two is a lullaby that I was fortunate to have had a friend of mine RJ thomas write for us. Well, we at Pink dollar loved hearing her sing it so much that we had it professionally produced by Luke Thomas (no relation,,, I think) and preformed by Ama Lee. They did such an amazing job on the song.
Everyone should tell us what they think at Pink Dollar Comics! We'd love to hear from fans!
Oh, one more thing. Our comics read right to left.
So the the Queens have issued their commands, What's next?
Hey, This is a sketch our artist did of one our sexy main characters. Yanta... man working out in those fields has sure done your body well. No wonder Otonashii's heart goes "Ba-Dum" around you.
Phi Phi OâHara is Secretly a Superhero.
by Deven Stewart, Director of Pink Dollar Comics
Whether you love her or hate her, Phi Phi OâHara is a household name thanks to Ru Paulâs Drag Race. However, What you may not know is that Phi Phi is bringing us all some serious cosplay realness. Check out a collection of her previous costumes over at gay-nerds.com or check her out onFacebook.
Lately a lot of celebrities have been coming out of the âgeek closetâ as blockbuster superhero and fantasy movies are releasing in tandem with star-studded comic con appearances. Â Learning that Phi Phi likes to cosplay may not seem like news at first, but Iâm here to fill you in on why it matters.
Growing up as a gay kid for me was super awkward. Â Because of my mannerisms, people around me (including my family) treated me like I was gay far before I made the self-realization. Â Being âoutedâ at such a young age meant that I was subjected to social ostracism pretty much as soon as I started grade school. Every single day of my school life was a personal hell. Â Until finally, one day in high school, I accidentally got outed from a different sort of closet.
I had been discreetly trying to read borrowed copies of Love Hina on the bleachers when someone caught me âreading those weird backwards comics.â Before I could even consider how to respond, they were already doing their best to bring unwanted attention to me. Â âGreat just another reason for people to avoid me,â I thought.
And yet, later that day, someone who I normally never talked to (who usually served me a daily dose of shade) approached me and asked if I was reading manga. Â For the first time in my life, something different about me had netted me a friend, and as I would find out in college, it would net me more friends than I would know what to do with.
This geek culture I had discovered was far more accepting of me than any other circle I had encountered, likely because they were all too familiar with the sting of social rejection. Â Even with this heartwarming support from my newfound friends, there was a significant lack of gay icons in the geek world at the time. Â So it makes me incredibly proud to know that, somewhere out there, there might be a gay youth who is looking for support, and will find Phi Phiâs cosplay and be reassured that being a gay-geek is actually incredibly cool.
Sadly, when I was a kid, I wasnât able to witness Phi Phi rocking League of Legend cosplay like the best of them (watch your back, Ya Ya Han) so instead, I had to look for characters I could identify with. Â Naturally I fell in love with Disney villains, who are not only coded as gay, but â Â letâs face it â are practically animated drag queens. Â Because of their deliciously dark humor and theatrical personalities, it was only a matter of time before I discovered drag queens after I started college.
Ever since, my love for drag queens and strong female characters has influenced my own work, as you can likely tell by looking at some of the female characters in my queer shonen webcomic,Autumn Rose. Â Seeing a drag queen like OâHara get influenced by the same geeky media that I love is not only intensely inspiring, but sort of feels like going full circle.
I canât speak for any other LGBT youth out there, only a younger version of myself, but I definitely consider Phi Phi OâHara as one of my new favorite superheroes.
Gomennasai! I am so sorry that we have been neglecting tumblr. (We really do still love you all). We've been trying to do conventions and work on updates for the website and some other really cool things for Autumn Rose that we totally forgot how cool tumblr is and how important all of you are.... Oh, off topic, sorry, again. Autumn Rose is up to page 56 of its first full chapter (pages not including a 23 page prologue). The Queens (named Posh and Lush, but we will get there soon enough) have shown up and reigned havoc in the city square where the last of the nephilim had been murdered (by a devilish double bladed guillotine, so they could cut off two heads at once) all save for our young princes. Autumn's cunning wit and Frost's magic were no help against the overwhelming forces of the Batharran Military backing Quan's invasion into Valonia. However, the Queens have proved formidable goddesses among mortals, let's see how they react to Frost's insistence that they have reaped enough vengeance (because the violence was making Autumn cry and that was just unacceptable to Frost).
Sorry not sorry, about the huge update guys. Â We've been busy little bees lately preparing for Nijicon coming up on October 18 & 19. http://www.nijicon.com/ We're working harder to make tumblr a higher priority in our update que, but lately we've slipped through the cracks. If you follow us on Facebook or twitter and you notice we've missed an update here, please kindly shoot us a note and be sure to let your friends know there is a new page! Even if we don't post a clip each week here, you can rest assured that we update every Saturday morning.
xoxo -Deven
