One Piece Chapter 882 Review

This arc just keeps getting better and better

We open with a cover page and it’s now following Ideo. Can’t wait to see what he and Blue Gilly get up to

We start off in the mirror world where Katakuri is waxing philosophically.

Don’t feel bad Bruee, I think Luffy’s just taken way too many blows to the head in this fight to remember your name.

Well looks like big bro Katakuri has always been this amazing. Also nice to see some genuine sibling affection now. Katakuri did this last chapter where he yelled at Luffy for hurting his family and it’ nice to see that wasn’t a throw away line of characterization.

I absolutely love this because a lot earlier in this arc, Brulee was basically being dragged around and forced to do things and really just being a pack-mule, now no one can lay finger on her without getting hurt. I think that’s proof of karma.

Katakuri attacks using a spear because we just need to keep adding to how powerful this guy is. I know he’s got a billion beri bounty, so it really feels like Oda is trying to show that this really is a tier above other villains they’ve fought.

We cut to the real world where Big Mom and Perospero are alerted to where the Straw Hats are heading. Also we find out that his monster is a candy monster likely made by Perospero. Actually I’m curious, this creature seems to be a homie, but was made out of candy so it originally was produced by Perospero, so I’m wondering if big mom can make a homie out of something made from a devil fruit. Like what if she fought Aokiji and he used Pheasant Beak, could Big Mom use her Soul Soul powers to turn that into a Homie against Aokiji? Man this fruit just keeps getting stronger.

Nuts Island? That sounds like a very low grade porno.

Yeah and Perospero tries to get Big Mom on track.

We cut back to the Mirror world where, big shock, Luffy isn’t doing to well.

ARE YOU SERIOUS!! Katakuri is an Awakened Devil Fruit User, holy shit! I mean I heard some people suspected it, but when I heard that I was thinking “nah, he’s already really powerful, I doubt it”. Guess I was wrong.

We cut back to sweet city where Mont-d’Or is keeping track of all the ships movements. And Pekoms is there.

We get this nice moment of seeing Tamago’s respect for Pedro and also thinking that maybe the Straw Hats are more than they expected.

Actually Tamago, accidents like that follow them no matter where they go. It just kinda happens.

We see that Bege and his bitchin ship are heading to Cacao Island for Chiffon. Well I mean what were we expecting, that’s his wife, of course he’s going to go pick her up.

We also hear that the Germa 66 have been defeated….

Or not.

Actually that’s Niji on the den den mushi, so does he sound like that member of the family he just beat up or is that one of his enhancements, to modify his voice. I only ask because Niji in the anime appeared and man is his voice deep.

Also yeah the Germa are coming back into the picture. HYPE!

Okay so post chapter follow up: Where do I begin!? Okay so positives of the chapter first, Luffy vs Katakuri has lived up to its potential and really shows just how strong a billion beri bounty pirate is. I mean we saw Jack, but he got smashed by Zunisha. But yeah, Katakuri has his Haki, his Mochi, this spear, now he’s awakened. Wow.

I like the interlude with Mont-d’Or (he’s actually a member of the family I wanted to see more of) and seeing a more human side of Tamago and Pekoms.

And the Germa’s too, man. It’s so great to see them not get shoved off to the side of the arc and that they’re going to, hopefully, help out. Man Cacao Island is going to be a intense.

In terms of technicals, I really loved the pacing in this chapter as well.

If there is one negative, I do kinda wish we got a page with the straw hats to see where they are, but hey we know they’re going to Cacao too so maybe it wasn’t that needed.

Final Verdict: 9/10

And here we have it, the core of Zoro’s philosophy all wrapped up nicely in a bow. Is he right? Is he wrong? It doesn’t really matter. What matters is that this is what Zoro believes about himself, and he uses it to drive himself forward.

This is one of my favorite things about One Piece that I tend to forget I love until someone points out something like this. In most media the author’s personal beliefs/opinions/values tend to be crystal clear (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing! Sometimes I really like it when I can tell! But it’s in like 95% of media). All the protagonists share their values and all the bad guys sneer at it. 

But in One Piece what the value or belief isn’t actually all that important - what matters is that the character believes it. Nami’s run off with the Merry by this point, but if she’d been here she’d be baffled by what Zoro is doing and she’d probably call him an idiot. And it wouldn’t be that she’s wrong and Zoro’s right or vice versa - the two of them just have very different belief systems and honor codes and different life experiences. Nami is a big believer in ‘live to fight another day’ and Zoro believes that if you didn’t die trying then you better have won, because otherwise you’re a failure. 

And that’s their character. Zoro is always like this, not just when the plot demands it or when it makes him seem cool. I’m often against scenes like this in media because a character who has not been shown to be this stubborn decides he’d rather die than sacrifice his honor - never mind that he did like six dishonorable things last episode. But Zoro? He’s introduced to us tied to a cross and starving to death for a crime that was barely a crime, enduring a punishment he could easily have gotten himself out of, talking about he’s going to survive a month like that and no one can stop him. So when he refuses to back down even once it’s clear that Mihawk both can and will kill him it’s not a surprise. 

I don’t know how Oda feels about retreating from a fight in order to survive. I know that he thinks conviction to one’s ideals and values matters. I think that’s why so many of OP’s villains are hurting or betraying their allies/underlings/crewmates/etc. in some way. They aren’t bad because they’re opposing the protagonists, they’re bad because they aren’t sticking to the beliefs they claimed - whether explicitly or implicitly - to have. The Straw Hats aren’t good guys because they always do the right thing - half the time they only do the right thing by complete accident - but because they stick to what they believe, no matter the consequences. And in order to sell something like that as anything but ‘plot convenience’ things like this have to happen - Zoro offering to sacrifice himself for Luffy feels more believable when you know from the very beginning that Zoro is the sort of person to never back down from what he wants - even when he’s staring death right in the eye.

Sure, you can dislike the tv show I like or the anime I love. But you don’t have to classify it as shit or dumb or cancerous. Because as childish as it may be, it does hurt a lot. I will respect your opinion as long as you give me something to respect.

By all means, you are allowed to explain to me why you dislike that character. I’m alright with that. But please don’t call me a bitch when I explain my reasons for loving that character. Because as idiotic as it may seem…
