Click on the photo for the second part of Mei Bastes’ retreat story. The post below is in reaction to that, this and this.
I’ve never met Mei Bastes in person, never been to a Meiday gig (shame on me, I know) but then she’s one of those whose reputation precedes her. I’ve always been two notches below worshipping her: for her balls, her guts and the amount of love she has for that wild child called the local indie music scene.
Pinkfive Productions lived a short life. Even if life finds a way to not stop me from resurrecting it, we still won’t be able to compare to Mei’s prods’ pinkie. But seriously, I get her. The prod business is horrible: you earn jack shit, you shell out until you run out, you never get back what you pay for. Worst of all, your belly gets fat from all the beer buckets you consume on a regular basis.
The only way you can actually earn money from doing a prod is when you do pay-to-play, force neophyte bands to sell tickets to your gig before they can play three songs last in a lineup of 17 bands. It’s sickening, really. Especially if you think about the kids who travel from Bulacan to Obsidian because they really, really just want a venue to do their thing, to have their thing heard by people other than their inner circle of friends.Â
The prod business was not meant to be a business. The prod life, ang eksena, was meant to be a community. In that year and almost-a-half that Pinkfive lived amongst the collective, nag-negative kami sa kita. But in those nights we worried about attendance, bar guarantees, and the fairness of giving out just beer and very, very rare and little gateshare in exchange for the wundermusic that floated out of the tiny and/or obscure venues we did prods in, we found in the most random strangers amazing talent, long-time friendships and sometimes, both in one.
The prod business was not meant to be a business. We stopped doing Pinkfive because it took a lot of money, effort, and real life had a way of getting in the way. I’m still friends with a lot of the people I’d met at gigs, and I will always love them friends as much as I love the scene. But really, it takes a different kind of…  I suppose, for lack of a better word… being to do it as long and as persevering as the story of 44 free gigs.
It’s a labor of love; and love for music and the music scene was is what Mei Bastes has a lot of. For that, scratch off those two notches. I absolutely worship Mei Bastes and what she stands for, and I sure as hell will continue to support any effort that proves the local music scene is worth loving and fighting for.
Mei’s gone, pass it on. Meiday’s gone, long live Meiday.
For those who don’t know who Mei Bastes is, or what Meiday is, read this: “A story on gigs and productions, money shit, and how it all works, and the good news.” to get an idea what she’s done for the local music scene, her current situation, and an idea of who she was.
For a quick recap, the lengthy post was about the story of Mei and all the gigs she’s ever organized (Meiday, Dope MNL, Fete De La Musique), details of a current incident of jackassery (Wall Lords), and a declaration that Meiday would be back January 5, 2013.
Since then, the original post declaring all this was deleted. You can still read it here, but I’m telling you it’s gone for a reason.
Mei’s gone and isn’t coming back.
She messaged me last week saying she was leaving. She said that she had had enough of the bitterness and bile that goes around the local music scene here, and that she just wants to go away now. After that blog post, she was contacted by Vito Crew, and she had to take it down, along with some other things. At the moment, she’s not allowed to talk about it online, and is going to issue a public apology. No idea when, but I guess just dismiss it as bullshit if you will. It sucks. It’s a shame. It’s a horrible thing to happen. It’s… going to be okay? (Nope)Â
The reasons for why she was leaving, though, she told me, was not just the Vito Crew thing, though, so, don’t go blaming them, or trying to get back at them over this when they’re talented young musicians and artists, and this was all just a terrible, horrible thing that happened. There are a bunch of reasons as to why she’s leaving, but that shouldn’t be important right now as it would probably lead to a blame game sort of deal, and well, that’s a messy, unnecessary thing to do.
With that, she has decided to leave Manila and its local music scene for good, and she’s not coming back for the foreseeable future.Â
We should respect her decision and just say goodbye, I guess. We’ll miss her, and all that. We’re losing one of the greatest supporters of the music scene here, and it’s a sad thing.
She just asks that people spread the word about what happened, and that there’s a reason why she’s doing what she is doing. She says thanks to everyone who ever supported or ever attended any of her gigs, and may we continue to support the local independent music scene.Â
She left on November 11, Sunday.
Spread it like wildfire!
After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

The Prodigal Daughter Returns
Going to the gig last night was a lot like coming home. Within this year, pramis. Magrereturn of the comeback ulet kami.

OBSIDIAN TURNS ONE! Sugod na sa Obsidian Bar and Grill tonight and WEAR WHITE! FREE ENTRANCE na'to mga friends, kaya no reason not to go.
Sa Pinkfive kase ang mga pumupunta - banda man, o supporter - 8 out of 10 times eh nagiging kaibigan namin after gig. Lahat game, lahat puwedeng makausap at maging kaibigan.
Doki, to paraphrase your song: Kayo, kayo ang nagbibigay kulay sa aming mundo.
Salamat sa pinakamagandang set n'yo of all time, at sa oras, effort at preparation! Stuff of legends kayo nung Friday.
The Naked Lights, salamat at lagi kayong handang tumugtog may beer man o wala. :))) Friday night was another reason to love you guys.
Flicker Fusion. This goes without saying, but I will say it just the same. Salamat, sobra. Words fail in expressing our love for you. Salamat ng marami palagiang suporta n'yo, sa pisikal o in spirit man. You are sorely missed these days. This year, you can expect greater gigs and greater music from us. Dahil after nitong first anniv gig namin, na-realize namin na utang namin sa inyo 'to. We owe it to you guys to be bigger and even better. :)

In my belief, Filipino music has so much to offer compared to these mainstream foreign artists. Our own bands do not resort to catchy music, cheap lyrics, and exfoliated faces in order to gather an audience. They rely on the Filipino experience and take materials from our own culture to express themselves and bare their souls out as they sing. They do not bend to the trends that can disappear in a flash. Our bands make songs that can be immortalized and express emotions that are timeless. Songs like 'Firework', 'Baby' and 'Nobody' cannot hold a candle against 'Ang Huling El Bimbo', 'This Guy's In Love With You, Pare' and 'Noypi'.Â
And while it may be a travesty to use the next line, it seems to fit best in this context.
Naman. Kelangan pa bang i-memorize 'yan? Natumbok mo, pare. \m/
Good day, If you haven’t yet heard, Ms. Sazi Cosino’s life partner had a stroke last week and just got out of the intensive care unit. He’s now stable and is in a normal room at Medical Center Manila, but still couldn’t speak straight and needs a lot of medication and therapy. Bills are piling up from having been confined in the ICU for three days, top that off with expensive medicationand future treatments.
Ms. Sazi’s, owner of Sazi’s Restobar (formerly Mayrics), contributed to the music scene significantly having been the one who pioneered having bands play at Mayrics. Her love for the scene is unmatched and as genuine as you could ever imagine, and she has been instrumental, through Mayrics, in a lot of band’s success through the years. With that said, maybe we could find time to help Ms. Sazi, share talents or help in whatever way we can. Let’s band together, even for just one night, show our support to someone who has given so much to the scene. Let’s help Ate Sazi.
A benefit gig is being put together right now to be held at Sazi’s Restobar this January 28 and 29 under INDIEMAND and OUTER LIMITS, both productions are founded by Ms. Sazi. Right now we’re looking for:
-Big name bands willing to play for FREE.
-Beer sponsors (the least we could do is give beers to the bands participating) -Financial donations could be given at the venue;
tickets will be 150, comes with a beer, but a separate box will be placed for monetary donations.
