Boardwalk Empire: Season 5, Episodes 5-8
Episodes 5-7: I got behind on episode 5 and then it just kind of snowballed from there, I guess. It was a little sad since I have been watching the show literally since the premiere of the first episode and I never once was more than, like, half a day behind!
It was sad to lose Van Alden and Chalky. I mean, going into this season I'd kind of figured that we'd lose Van Alden, but it was still kind of sad since I've always really enjoyed his character. He's probably in my top 3 on this show. Chalky is another personal favorite of mine, so I was bummed to see him go. Losing him actually just kind of made me more frustrated than anything because I feel like they totally wasted him in his final season. I'm mad that one of his last episodes on the show was that one where he spent the whole time in the house of those two women. What a waste of his character. I loved getting to see Daughter Maitland again, though. I loved her last season.
Young Gillian made me so so sad in episode 7. It was almost hard to watch her scenes knowing about all of the bad things that would happen to her later. I really like Mabel Thompson.
These episodes were all pretty good. I wasn't thrilled with the first half of the season (which is why I'd fallen behind), but these three brought me back into the show a little bit. I'm always left wanting more Margaret, though...but at least she had some good scenes in the finale!
The finale: Well, it's really over. I've been watching this show since it premiered! I can't say that about too many long-running shows. This show is also what brought me to tumblr a few years back. My excitement for the show had started to falter, though, and after a while I started to get really frustrated with the show because it has always had SO much potential and I've felt like a lot of its potential has been unrealized and wasted. Still, it's always been a beautifully made show and I did enjoy it throughout for the most part.
The finale was pretty good. It tied up a lot of loose ends. It frankly wasn't a massive shocker, I guess, since I'd started to wonder if that kid was Tommy Darmody, but I still enjoyed it. The last ten minutes or so were really well done. I have to say that it was a pretty fitting ending.
I sort of wanted a little more from that Gillian/Nucky conversation, but oh well. Everything obviously came full circle by the very ending. I liked the flashbacks in the last few episodes, so I guess they weren't totally pointless even though I was initially not thrilled about them.
Anyway, I'm sad that the show is over! I'll miss it a lot, tbh, even though I stopped loving it as much as I once did. I have often wished for more from the show, but it still was a unique show in a lot of ways and it was beautifully made and I will definitely miss it.
