    “   to make that happen, i would have to get a cut deep enough to break the first layers of my skin. i don’t like the idea of that, it would hurt a lot...   ”   not to mention how she’s scared to the bone, for the first time of her life, by the way he talks about bleeding as if it is something of a masterful art-project worth gazing at when it is the opposite. bleeding is messy and not fascinating at all. especially not at the suspense of other people.

he isn’t entirely a friend, but not a complete stranger either, or maybe not a harmful stranger. but somehow, some way, and definitely through good and bad, she feels compelled to help him. there isn’t a bone in her body that would allow her or him to part when he’s like this: moody, or maybe not moody, but not happy either. she sits next to him, enough to the side so he can get up and walk away if he wants. deep down hoping he won’t, not yet at least, not before she has a chance to make it right, to make him smile. 

barbie rests a gentle hand on his shoulder, willing it to be enough to divert his attention from the grief and onto her, offering him a kind smile that reaches her eyes, warm and soulful. “    you don’t have to let it in even if it knocks on your door. and if you choose to let it in, don’t let it stay. you’re always free to begin again somewhere. whether that’s here with a friend, or around the next corner. but grief doesn’t own you, not without your consent.    ”

   “    but the universe is REALLY VAST.    ”     arms spread out like a bird’s wings to strengthen her argument. it almost looks like she might take off and leap into the air. and perhaps it isn’t too far from that at all. astrology, astronomy, just the idea of the universe and the stars alone is enough to keep barbie on her toes. to a point where her mouth pours out words in excitement, even though her brain should know when to tell her to stop or at least slow down. “ when you think about it, it’s the two of us that have so much more to learn from it, lena ! there are all these stars, the northern star, cassiopeia, the big dipper... my dad and i used to watch a meteor-shower when i was a little girl, but chelsea does it now. which is fine, i mean, she should learn too. there’s just so much to learn about this world. ”  in fact, leave it to her to be the over-enthusiastic pep-talker.
