because you need the avatar state to end the war, aang, which is the reason katara came with you in the first place…because you can end the war…with cosmic energy…
Zutara Week 2026 Day 1: (A Midsummer Night's) Dream

The full version of this ended up with some serious anatomy issues that I a) didn't notice until pretty far along in the process, and b) don't have time to fix right now, so here's a cropped look at the work in progress. 😂 Happy Zutara Week!

How are you gonna say Zuko would be a toxic bf to Katara when Aang IN CANON:
- burned her after she warned him to not be reckless about firebending (“The Deserter”)
- kissed her without her consent twice (“The Day of Black Sun,” “The Ember Island Players”)
- gave up the avatar state “for her” even though she quite literally wants the war to end and that’s the only thing that would help him against Ozai, then LIED about it because he KNEW she’d be mad (“The Guru”)
- has to constantly be calmed down by Katara while in the avatar state because he can’t control it and places that emotional burden constantly on her (“The Southern Air Temple,” “The Avatar State,” “The Library”)
- undermined her pain and anger regarding her mother and told her to just forgive her mom’s murderer despite him absolutely TWEAKING when Appa was muzzled (“The Southern Raiders”)
- neglected Kya and Bumi in favor of Tenzin the airbender (TLOK)
- disregards Katara’s pain as a genocide survivor and the last southern waterbender by telling her she “doesn’t understand” what it’s like (LoA movie)
-straight-up doesn’t acknowledge her mom’s death at the hands of the Fire Nation when first told (“The Boy in the Iceberg”), meanwhile Jet, Haru, and Zuko immediately empathize with her when she tells them (“Jet,” “Imprisoned,” “The Crossroads of Destiny”)
- tells her she’s not funny and doesn’t make good jokes (“Sokka’s Master”)
- deliberately keeps the map with her dad’s location hidden because he wants to keep her around WHILE KNOWING how badly she wants to see her dad (“Bato of the Water Tribe”)
- snapping at Katara in the desert while she’s literally keeping the group together/moving despite the loss of Appa (“The Desert”)
A lot of these are framed as romantic, but mind you Aang hardly ever apologizes to Katara nor does the narrative efficiently punish him for these mistakes!
But sure, Kataang are perfect soulmates and Aang can do no wrong
It irks me how every time Katara warns Aang not to do something because she’s worried he’ll hurt himself, he ends up getting her hurt and then she comforts him.
In The Deserter, she tells him to be careful with his firebending or he’ll harm himself, he then burns her hands and she heals herself and comes back to comfort him.
In The Avatar State, she expresses concern about him going into the uncontrolled Avatar State and warns him not to, he doesn’t listen, and then she’s the one used as bait. Later, in The Desert, she has to pull him out of the Avatar State despite her previously voiced fears.
Why is this emotional burden to push down her own feelings to cater to him always placed on her?
i think the funniest tweet i saw today was someone saying "why ship zutara when zukka is right there" and like you don't even have to ship zutara but uh. it was a real hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby moment to me. like yeah... why ship the two characters with a 3-season long enemies to friends arc.... when the two guys who barely interacted are right there...
Imagine being so insecure over a non canon ship that you have to complete destroyed even their friendship just so they can make fun of those who still ships them. Imagine being so childish that you removed Zuko's scar but not Aang as though to make a point. Imagine making your canon ship kissed and it seem so forced like they're trying to prove something. Imagine hating your female protagonist that you reduce her character to just being the girlfriend who has to calm her boyfriend down. That's not a healthy relationship and our Katara deserves better than that.
schrödingers "zuko redemption arc" in which he has the best redemption arc ever but at the same time hes a colonizer and the worst person in the world depending on whether the person you're talking to likes zutara or not
