less “if you see a man and woman together at pride be nice! they could be bi/pan/trans/ace/aro” and more “stop gendering strangers to harass them anywhere, but especially at pride holy shit”
you know what? i want this to reach the people who do this– especially the ones claiming to support trans folk (usually in really hollow ways lol i’m not bitter). keep reblogging– i want this sentiment to be widespread and for people to stop gendering strangers! especially in explicitly LGBTQ+ spaces!
People horrifically fucking up facts about evolution and genetics too support their stupid beliefs or to seem smart and “rational” is probably one of my big pet peeves
Yeah. An enormous number of racists, misogynists, homophobes and transphobes I’ve met eventually whip out something about evolutionary biology and they never, ever, ever, ever have the slightest shadow of even a half-right idea what any of it means or ever cite a claim ever actually made by a scientific study.
Here’s a quick handy reference list or anyone who isn’t sure:
Homosexuality does exist in almost all social species.
“Alpha males” are not a real phenomenon and in fact the most aggressive males tend to be the least reproductively successful.
“Survival of the fittest” simply means that the success of a species hinges on how well it “fits” its environment. It does not mean that stronger or smarter individuals are supposed to succeed. Those things can even be a detriment in nature by wasting too many resources.
“Race” is not a biological concept. Someone who looks different from you has the same human genes, just a different grab-bag of dominant traits.
Evolution is not a march towards higher complexity, more intelligence or even more adaptability. It’s just a fluctuation of characteristics dictated by environmental pressures and mutation. A slime mold isn’t “less evolved” than a hawk, just adapted for success under different parameters.
People didn’t evolve “from apes.” It’s more complicated than that. We are a category of ape, sharing a common ancestor with the other apes.
No human on Earth is “closer” to an evolutionary ancestor than any other. We all descended from the same one.
Neanderthals were also a “sibling” species of ours. We didn’t evolve from them.
Some of us did, however, cross-breed with Neandethal man. It is exclusively non-African races, such as white people, who still carry hybrid human/Neanderthal genes. Whoops, sorry “white purity” skinheads, you’re actually mixed with a whole other species.
Baby armadillo.
Humans will pet anything.
How wonderful, then, to live on a planet full of creatures that like to be petted!
“ How wonderful, then, to live on a planet full of creatures that like to be petted!”
It truly is.
the first episode of Derry Girls had the most accurate selection of Northern Irish people reacting to bombscares I’ve ever seen:
Reblogging this to let you all know that Derry Girls is now on Netflix for anyone outside Ireland/The UK. It’s hilarious so I’d recommend watching it if you can.
For anyone inside Ireland/The UK, it’s available on 4OD.
Tooth fairies are a smaller and friendlier subspecies of the larger and much more hostile bone fairies.
Thank you for this bespoke nightmare
i think something people don’t fundamentally understand about bisexual womanhood is that one of the reasons bi women are so vulnerable to experiencing sexual violence and domestic violence is that, fundamentally, bisexuality makes straight people so damn uncomfortable. like obviously straight people find it convenient to fetishize and objectify bisexuals, and to treat bisexuals as forbidden sex partners, but when it comes to bisexuality as an actual identity and as something that leads to romantic relationships, straight people simply cannot conceive of it. especially when it comes to bi women. under the heterosexualized gender binary and patriarchal roles for women, there is an established one woman-to-one-man ideal.
men can have sex with as many women as they’d like, but women are supposed to find one (1) man they settle down with and exclusively be attracted to men. bisexual women are fundamentally threatening to this ideal and simply by existing they upend straight people’s paradigms about what a proper family should look like, what the proper way to love someone is, what the proper way to conceptualize desire is, and what the proper attraction set for a woman should be. bisexual women are seen as greedy, suspicious, and threatening because of that multiciplity inherent to their attraction. they’re defying the idea that women cannot have a multiciplity in whom they love and desire (more than just whom they want to have sex with). and that’s scary to straight people, especially to straight men.
that’s why straight people coercively associate threesomes and non-monogamy with bisexuals (not only because straight people hunt bisexuals to have threesomes with, but also because they think it’s fundamentally frightening and greedy and hedonistic for bisexuals to be multiple-gender attracted). bisexuality defies every categorization straight people have come up with and that fucking enrages them. and so that of course manifests as straight men feeling threatened by bisexual womanhood, and straight men wanting to punish bi women to control their multiple-gender attractionality. and one way straight men often control their bi female partners is by controlling whom they befriend - a lot of bi women who’ve been abused by men report that their abusers wouldn’t allow them to make friends with other women, or other men, or with other lgbt people. you can clearly see that her even saying she’s bisexual terrifies and threatens the straight man, who then uses abuse as a way of exerting power over her and isolating her so that he can punish her.
so yes, while a woman being attracted to men is the “norm”, bisexual womanhood is NOT a privilege or non-threatening or “patriarchal” or “conforming” to norms. it’s quite the opposite. you can’t extricate a bisexual woman’s attraction to men from her overall bisexuality. it’s precisely the fact that she’s multiple-gender attracted that makes her so scary and threatening to straight men. when bisexual women make the choice to defy straight people and to choose the bisexual label as a PERMANENT identity, they’re giving a big fuck you to straight people’s dichotomous views of love and sexual desire and relationships and families, and that’s what makes their bisexuality subversive. and the biggest proof of that is the fact that bisexual women are so vulnerable to sexual/domestic violence and the fact that 90% of their batterers are men. if straight people, especially straight men, didn’t find bi women threatening or gross or deceptive, if they truly accepted bisexual women and gave them privileges for being bi, then bi women wouldn’t have such high abuse and rape statistics. if bi women were “rewarded” for being attracted to men or for being bisexual, then bi women in relationships with straight men wouldn’t be vulnerable to facing such heightened rates of brutality.
this is what an actual materialist analysis of bisexual womanhood is but it’s something that no one other than bi women are capable of understanding. and this is exactly why women’s shelters and LGBT organizations have no or hardly any paradigms and programs to rehabilitate and support bi women in abusive relationships with men. bi women abused by men are either lumped in the category of straight women abused by men (which really just reifies the discourses that enable straight men to get away with abusing bi women) or their plights are ignored and the cycle continues.

My brother was diagnosed with depression years before I was, and because of that he started therapy years before I did.
I still remember when I was a young teen and he was playing a Nirvana song and he stopped it at this one line: “I miss the comfort of being sad”
He told me that when you start to get better, there’s a part of you that misses being sad and that if you start feeling that way you have to be extra extra aware and careful because if you indulge the feeling you’ll go down a self-destructive spiral
And even though that was years and years ago, I think about it all the time. Especially when I’m reading discourse on the idea of getting so attached to mental illness as an identity that you don’t want to improve things because you feel safe in it and don’t know who you are without it
I always think of that line “I miss the comfort of being sad” and my brother’s warning
Who the hell invented the word “smexy” and what the fuck does the letter m in it even stand for
thanks
