Before I keep posting about aftg, I feel like I have to address that there’s major parts of the story that perpetuates a lot of harmful stigmas and stereotypes. I think if you’re older and have a decent understanding of how mental illness and psych meds work, as well an understanding of drug addiction/withdrawal, then go ahead and read this series! You’ll be able to discern what’s accurate and what is not. If you’re maybe a bit younger and less versed in these topics, I wouldn’t suggest this series to you.
It’s a really good story don’t get me wrong, I read the entire trilogy in 3 days, but at the same time it is a poor introduction to what addiction is actually like and how antipsychotics work (which I know is retconned in the 3rd book). A lot of the assumptions made in the books are assumptions I held when I was younger, being raised in a strict Christian environment that villainized mental health treatment of any kind. These assumptions can prevent people from seeking out the help that they need.
