When I first read aftg I knew nothing more than the occasional “It's gay and they play a sport” and I thought the ship was going to be KevNeil for the entirety of two books I-
Neil dug his phone out of his jeans pocket with his free hand and stuffed it into the netted end pocket of his duffel. [...] Neil dropped his racquet and let his bag get ripped from his shoulder. Andrew and Kevin knew he'd never let go of these things willingly. It wouldn't tell them where he'd gone, but they'd know he hadn't left them by choice.
This is how Neil left behind everything that had bound him to “Neil Josten” that is.
But you know what he couldn't get rid of?
He was okay with leaving his racquet, therefore exy, the sport he would die for, and his duffel, the thing that fit everything he owned inside, behind.
(later in the car) He traced the outline of a key into his bloody, burnt palm with a shaky finger, closed his eyes, and wished Neil Josten goodbye.
But he couldn't let go of the key Andrew gave him, through all of it, he couldn't let it go.
The only thing he would take to his deathbed being a key.
Neil's mother's name is Mary.
His uncle's name is Stuart.
Mary and Stuart are siblings.
Mary Stuart like the Scottish queen-
The Hatfords literally rule over the UK
“Andrew swerved to one side long enough for Neil to pass him. Kevin picked up speed to fall in alongside Neil. Neil looked over his shoulder at Andrew.”
Well, chances are that Andrew just wanted to look at Neil's ass while running.
Upon searching for the ominous comic version of og all for the game (does anyone know what that's all about?) I found another post, where Nora confirmed “Minyard” to be pronounced “Men-yerd”
All “Mini-yard” giggles destroyed with one post
I'm impressed that Neil knew the word for dashboard lighter in German.
I mean, to this day I don't know the right/common translation.
Maybe I should add that I'm German.
Neil could you teach me my own language?
A random thought of mine:
I get easily disoriented, whenever I decide to rearrange my bed (because of the bed/wall connection).
But now imagine Neil, who moved to different beds on a monthly basis? That kid wakes up and has no clue where he is. No wonder he needs 2 minutes every day to make it (and himself) feel real..
What if Andrew answered Neil's question about what he's afraid of with “my voice in the audiobook” instead of “heights” - because same, Andrew!
Andrew doesn't repeat himself, he made it clear often enough. But there is one time he repeats his words without even being asked to.
“Did he touch you?”
“What did he—”
Andrew knotted his fingers in Aaron's hair and yanked to shut him up. “Answer me. I said, did he touch you?”
And that's important. Because Aaron is more important than Andrews beliefs.
Remember, when Neil scolded the FBI Agent in The King's Men for using a baseball analogy?
“Andrew should be tired by now since Andrew had such a heavy racquet and was hitting every ball like he wanted to score a home run”
Chapter 4 of The Foxhole Court and Neil brings up a baseball analogy - chaotic
“when's the last time anyone cried for you? Never, right? They're there for Kevin every step of the way, but where were they when we needed them?”
[…]
“His life is not more important than mine just because he's more talented.”
Not only did Seth's words hit too close home for Neil, he also just stated what an actual injustice his death has been. Seth's life wasn't less important than anyone else's just because he was a dick and that makes his death even more tragic.
“Are we really doing this all over again? You want to fight these guys all the way to graduation?”
“I want to be left alone.”
-
“'Okay'? Just 'okay'? This isn't okay. Jesus. Sometimes you're so much like Andrew it's horrifying.”
Aaron's expression was livid. “Fuck you.”
At this point Aaron is just afraid to let someone in because he knows Andrew will interfere (and people could get hurt because of him that). Maybe he's afraid of Andrew too (also: it must be hard to be compared to a sibling you're afraid of because that means you must be evenly horrible).
And that thought hurts just a little.
“Kevin, I swear to God-”
Kevin's name was enough to get Seth out of bed.
The fact that Seth hates Kevin so much, the word Kevin alone is enough to annoy Seth to the point of leaving his bed just to punch him - never fails to amaze me.
Andrew coming back to his home after the first night with Neil in Columbia: trash can filled with vomit, a broken alarm clock, a shattered glass in the kitchen, water spilled on the floor, the new clothes in the toilet clogging the pipe, no more hot water to shower, no Neil
Andrew: you had one job
The weight of arms around him was one his body knew […] The hold on him tightened a little in response to his shifting.
“Mom?” he said slurred […]
The person behind him still understood, judging by the amused, “Not quite.” […]
Nicky caught at his hair to push his head off the side of the bed.
So Nicky spooned Neil after their first night in Columbia-
