It's my favorite time of year once again and I happily celebrate with as many handmade & up-cycled decorations as possible!
Reflections of the Season:
The seasonal changes are difficult for many of us, but I’ve always had a fondness for fall. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that is likely due to the lack of expectation associated with the season.
It became a time where I could make my own meaning and memories - and decorations too. In Winter, there are widely celebrated religious and secular holidays which both have lots of social and familial expectations. In Spring, for my upbringing at least, there was once again religious expectations and family-based holidays - not to mention the awful weather. In Summer, money we did not have was spent and unnecessary pressure was felt to have the longest holiday, the best birthday, to make every moment count, and to distract us from our unfortunate reality.
Yet Autumn always arrives to slow us down and remind us of the temporal nature of all things. Halloween had no familial or social expectation as I became an adult. The commercialism was at least slightly less invasive. Thanksgiving dinner was easier to miss than Christmas gatherings at first. The weather allows me to spend more time in nature. Autumn holds such wonder in its changes, and the death it represents healed something in my spirit.
So, I began making my own traditions with chosen family and embracing spiritual meaning where I found it. That is why I celebrate the season🖤
🥀Eyeball Flower Vase - Thrifted vase, Dollar Tree flowers, & reused plastic eyeballs from previous years.
🕯️Candle Holder - Thrifted holder with a candle I already owned.
🐈⬛ Cat Ghost Salt & Pepper - New purchase from TJ Maxx.
🍄 Mushroom Basket - Thrifted basket I stained last year (used year-round by switching the contents) & Dollar Tree mushrooms.
🎃 Pumpkin Garland - Dollar Tree pumpkins (originally meant to clip onto flower arrangements). I removed the clips & stems, made new stems from oven-bake clay, hot glued them on, & strung the pumpkins on black twine I already had.
✨ Sphere Oil Bottle - Glass bottle from a craft store that holds homemade anointing oil (it always stays in our kitchen).
🍂 Mini Glass Bottles - Craft store glass bottles that I use for keepsakes:
One holds some of the anointing oil from the larger bottle (I move it between rooms for convenience).
Another holds pieces of palm leaves from my first Ash Wednesday service.
The last holds pieces of branches from a dead Dogwood tree in our yard.
🦴 Bones Bottle - Glass bottle I already had, filled with plastic bones from Dollar Tree.
👁️🗨️ Eyeball Bottle - Plastic bottle filled with Dollar Tree eyeballs.
🌿 Moss Bottle - Plastic bottle with moss from Dollar Tree & leftover fake leaves from previous projects.
🫙 Cat Whisker Bottle - Upcycled glass soap dispenser filled with naturally shed cat whiskers I’ve collected over the past three years while cleaning our house (Please note: cat whiskers fall out completely on their own, similar to our eyelashes, do NOT cut/trim/pluck/bother any cat's whiskers). This piece stays out year-round.
🕸️ Spiderweb Picture - Gold frame from Dollar Tree featuring a real spiderweb from our porch, preserved on black cardstock I already had.
🔮 Cauldron - Black cauldron candy bucket from Walmart (though secondhand finds would be cool). I applied napkins with Mod Podge, added hot glue “ooze” around the edges, then painted everything with black acrylic paint. Inside, I placed an upside-down plastic bowl, glued on Dollar Tree plastic ornaments, added purple Dollar Tree string lights, & topped it with ripped cotton pads for texture which I already had on hand.
🕷️ Spiders - Made from reused materials: pipe cleaners cut & twisted together with white embroidery thread hot glued to the backs.
🧡 Ornament Garland - All-new ornaments from Dollar Tree. I either painted them with acrylic paint or applied napkins & Mod Podge before painting. They’re strung on black string I already had.
🕸️ Spiderweb Garland - Reused for several years (can’t remember where I originally bought it lol).
💀 Skeleton Garland - New purchase from Dollar Tree.
🕷️ Spiderweb Lace - Dollar Tree table runner repurposed for décor.
☠️ Bone Garland - Made from leftover Dollar Tree plastic bones & Dollar General figurines. I drilled holes in each piece & strung them on black twine I already owned.
⚫ Pompom Garland - Walmart pompoms strung on black thread I had on hand.
🪵 Wooden Pumpkin Garland - Reused from previous years (originally from Walmart around 3-4 years ago), restrung on black twine I already had. I recommend keeping original string for future projects.
🧹 Witch Hat Garland - Made from leftover black cardstock, tape, & hot glue, strung on black embroidery thread I had on hand.
👻 Floating Ghosts - Dollar tree felt cut-outs individually threaded on fishing line.
