06 - Rana planante - Soaring frog

𝘕𝘺𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢

🇮🇹 La rana planante è una delle chimere più diffuse e adattabili che si possono trovare. Abita specchi e corsi d'acqua a diverse altitudini e ha solo bisogno di sufficiente umidità per prosperare. È particolarmente nota per le sue cure parentali: il maschio porta sulla schiena i girini finché non sono grandi abbastanza da confondersi con i normali girini di anfibi classici.

🇬🇧 The soaring frog is one of the most adaptable chimeras around. It lives in still and running water and only need some humid air to thrive. It's famous for its parental cares: the male carries the tadpoles until they're big enough to blend with regular tadpoles from classical amphibians

05 | Lince squamata - Finned linx

𝘓𝘺𝘯𝘹 𝘭𝘺𝘯𝘹 +

𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘢

🇮🇹 La lince squamata predilige I corsi d'acqua montani, ma può essere trovata anche nelle zone costiere più selvagge. Solitaria cacciatrice, possono passare mesi prima che incontri un suo simile tanto è ampio il suo territorio. La stagione migliore per osservarla è quella degli amori, durante la quale le linci squamate migrano verso il lago montano in cui sono nate.

🇬🇧 The finned linx prefers mountain streams and rivers, but can be found on the coastline where human activity is more scarce. Solitary predator, months can pass before it can meet another of its same species, since their territory it's so vast. The best season to observe them it's mating season, while the finned linxes migrate to the alpine ponds where they were born.

4 - Gipeto lupino appenninico | Italian bearded wolfture

𝘎𝘺𝘱𝘢𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 +

𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘶𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴

🇮🇹 Il gipeto lupino era scomparso all'arco alpino a causa della caccia spietata che la brutta reputazione che aveva questa chimera è solo un duro lavoro di reintroduzione e convivenza ha potuto riportare questa creatura a ripopolare i monti che un tempo erano la sua casa.

Il gipeto lupino è prettamente saprofago, ovvero si nutre delle carcasse che trova nei dirupi più scoscesi e caccia soltanto nella stagione di nidificazione per nutrire meglio i suoi pulli.

🇬🇧 The Italian bearded wolfture was extinct in the Alps as a result of the relentless hunt its bad reputation caused. Only with the hard work of reintroduction programs paired with raised awareness in herders could bring back this wonderful chimaera on the peaks they once soared.

The bearded wolfture is mostly saprophagous, meaning that it feeds off carcasses, but can hunt during mating season to feed its chicks.

03 Moscardino mellifero | Nectarine dormouse

𝘔𝘰𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘴 +

𝘈𝘱𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢

🇮🇹 Vive in colonie arboree, soprattutto nei pressi di pascoli molto tranquilli o praterie incontaminate. Sono piccoli, ma possono essere molto minacciosi se devono difendere la loro regina.

🇬🇧 It lives in arboreal hives, with particular preference for quiet pastures and pristine prairies. They're small critters, but can be very fierce if they need to protect their queen.

02 - Cervo corazzato | Armored deer

𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘶𝘴

🇮🇹 Un ibrido tra il cervo nobile e il cervo volante, è un erbivoro di grossa taglia con pochi predatori che osano sfidare le punte del suo palco. Abita foreste montane e di pianura e si sposta in branchi guidati da un solo maschio. Durante l'inverno il palco dei maschi cade, per ricrescere più grande e maestoso a primavera.

🇬🇧 An hybrid between the European deer and the stag beetle, the armored deer makes for a tough prey thanks for its size and dangerous horns. It lives in forests of various altitudes, forming herds led by a single male. During winter males' horns fall, only to grow back in spring bigger and majestic.

01 - Cincia felina | Crested wildcat

𝘓𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 + 𝘍𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴

🇮🇹 Minuta e curiosa, la cincia felina abita foreste di ogni altitudine prediligendo quelle di conifere. A dispetto della sua natura felina è un animale molto socievole: forma colonie familiari nei tronchi cavi di pini e abeti, comunicando con fusa e cinguettii che hanno una vera e propria sintassi. Si nutre di piccoli roditori, invertebrati e semi.

🇬🇧 Petite and curious, the crested wildcat lives in forests at all latitudes, with a preference for conifers woods. Despite its feline half it's a very social animal: it lives in familial clones and communicates with chirps and purrs with a real syntax. The crested wildcat mostly eats small rodents, invertebrates and nuts.

Welcome to the world of Chimeras!

In this alternate world, humans and other "classic" animals coexist with the products of magical aberrations: chimeras, blends of real animals that have come into contact with the raw energy of arcane crystals scattered around the world. Given people's love and curiosity for nature, there would surely be a large group of enthusiasts in this world, in addition to professionals in the field. So I decided to create a hypothetical guide to help novice chimera-watching enthusiasts familiarize themselves with the main chimeras found in Italy (and the rest of Europe). In future posts, I'll introduce them all; there are nine little creatures!

I'm not dead (yet), so here, have this teaser illustration of a project I actually finished!

The concept is: if there were magical creatures roaming around people would most definitely want to Observe them! So I made a little guide for nine of the most fascinating chimaeras of Europe.

Honestly very true.

Something that I always like to emphasis is that scientific credibility doesn't just restrict but also empowers. Your own imagination is limited by the things you know and the visual library your memory holds. The more you know the more creative you can be.

On top of that having restriction makes often for interesting challenges, a raptor looking like the JP ones doesn't really work, herrerasaurs however... or think about how you can use feathers not just to influence the color but also the shape and "feel" of an animal, want it to be spiky and dangerous? Floofy? Elegant? Deep time through the lens of paleoart can offer all of that and more.

Last thing I googled: On desktop it's mostly double-checking for spelling ("case in point" is the last one); On mobile: "kattsand i kompost" I was trying to figure out if there's cat litter sand we'd be able to sort as compostable 🥲 the answer was no

Looking forward to: celebrating Kajs graduation and then summerrrrr

Current obsessions: revisiting hobbies I had when younger but Without Shame and as an adult! So lately it's been some games (esp dragon age inquisition now that I finally have access to it), and allowing myself to get fully properly invested in them rather than dissociating myself from them. Next up will likely either be writing or drawing again, depending on what wins over!

Omg thank you so much for the tag!!! It's always so fun to do these posts, it takes me a while bc I'm a slow writer but it's always great!!!

Last song: Asleep in the Deep by Mastodon, I'm very monotonous but I've been listening to their discography on repeat for so long.

Last movie: "Emma.", which was a pleasure for the eye but not very true to the book which was really painful tbh. I know the differences aren't big, but when it comes to Jane Austen work it's really all about nuances... Bittersweet!

Last book: fiction: Three Musketeers, honestly so fun and entertaining!! Non fiction: Come sfamare un dittatore (how to feed a dictator) by Witold Szabłowski, an enlightening reading indeed.

Last TV show: "M. Son of the century" I'm only three episodes in and I already love the way it depicts the period, the people's behavior and Mussolini himself being a total asshole and a loser that can only succeed because of others. I also loved the fourth wall breaks!

Sweet/savory/spicy: definitely spicy!!! Not that I can handle it very well...

Last thing I googled: on mobile it's how "M." is written in English, on desktop it's probably the hazelnut dormouse!!! For secret special reasons.

Relationship status: living with my partner!

Looking forward to: I really can't wait for Sir Philip Pullman to publish the last book of the Book of Dust series and the third Dune movie!!! Also can't wait to see some friends and family I haven't been able to see for a while!

Current obsession: plush making!!! My good friend Luna got me into the hobby, they make professional quality plushies and I got excited to try! Other stuff I'm fawning over are: Jane Austen and her incredible irony, Dune both book and movie, the Northern Lights saga and historical fashion. Way too much stuff!

Wow! Had a great time (not thanks to Tumblr, that kept not saving this as a draft so I had to rewrite it like twice) but I hope this is somewhat fun to read! Thank you so much @pixelhilma!!!!
