chirostenotes pergracilis - caenagnathid - late cretaceous

this fluttery chirostenotes is accompanied by her (barely visible and Only Ten Pixel Wide) lovely little siblings tonight! named for their oddly narrow hands and one pointed, straight claw, this oviraptorosaur was thought to have used its talons for crevasse probing like modern day eye-eye. the representation here has feathers (that other caenag that wouldn't have allowed for it to do as such, sadly!

cryolophosaurus ellioti - neotheropod - early jurassic one of the largest theropods of its time, cryolphosaurus was found in antarctica of all places! these handsomely crested fellows were found in an area that would've been well above sea level- 4,000 meters- where nights were likely below freezing. its existence supports the idea that jurassic antarctica likely had forests with diverse wildlife, living alongside basal sauropodomorphs and various synapsids in its lifetime. higher resolution version under the cut!

nothronychus mckinleyi - therizinosaurid - late cretaceous

a Very tall lady with some Quite impressive talons- i dont doubt the upkeep is a hassle! a study in this specific species of nothronychus (one of two, the other being n. graffami) and other therizinosaurs showed the family had very well developed senses useful for foraging! another future re-examination of n. mckinleyi's braincase in particular suggested an inclination to hearing low frequency sounds, meaning nothronychus likely had complex social behaviors- possibly even comparable to today's elephants!

wannanosaurus yansiensis - pachycephalosaur - late creteaceous

this basal pachycephalosaur fellow was found in anhui, china from some very small remains. the little creature probably didn't even reach above your shin! its been argued the parts found are pieced together from material not even of wannanosaurus, but for the sake of Im Believing Wannanosaurus Is Real Tonight we can just believe for a second all the material (apart from its skull) is, in fact, the him :)

tonight i would also like to introduce- for those who are interested- Chicken Leg.

a. um. Carnotaurus. he was originally going to be the first post on this blog after i had colored him But the incredible @yeehawhecknaw took it upon themself to color him Quite Incredibly. And Give Him A Little Tophat And Monocle. this creature is now our mascot for the sake of there being a mascot.

his little legs only have two grippers and are so thin he can be blown over by a light gust. he is simply incapable of hunting prey because He Is So Bright. but even though he is a Little pathetic he Keeps Smiling. because he is living his best life and thats what matters.

hypacrosaurus altispinus - hadrosaur - late cretaceous

this handsome fella was named for the tall neural spines that make up the meaty hump on his back! fossilized nests of hypacrosaurus show they grew about as fast as todays ratites (i.e ostriches, emu, cassowaries) in order to outpace their tyrannosaurid predators! sub-adult tyrannosaurs Probably weren't too keen on getting crushed by 4 tonnes of Beast.

achelousaurus horneri - centrosaurine - late cretaceous discovered by the lovely jack horner, this intimidating ceratopsid lady has Quite the eyebrows. she was part of a study relating to the debate of thermoregulation in dinosaurs- whether they could generate heat or not, like current avian dinosaurs and mammals. by analyzing oxygen isotopes in the fossils of dinosaurs found in the two medicine formation, paleontologists could pinpoint seasonal variations in body temperature! they found the variations pointed to achelousaurus and other dinosaurs in the formation being homeothermic endotherms- the same as our avian dinosaurs today!

unnamed toba sauropodomorph - titanosaur(?) - early cretaceous

only known from a few partial leg bones and four caudal vertebrae, this mysterious fella was found in toba, japan! the only information ive been able to find about the lad (apart from its appearances in the fossil fighters franchise) is a paper written by yukimitsu tomida and yoshihiro tsumura discussing the discovery and structure of the bones, as well as postulating the fossils belonged to a titanosaur! assuming it is a titanosaur, its quite possibly the largest dinosaur ever found in japan.

this lovely lady has what is definitely one of the top-tier names of the dinosaur kingdom, meaning "living fortress" or "living citadel"! her fossil was so radioactive- as are others in the cedar mountain formation- it ended up leading to her discovery. higher resolution version under the cut!

deinocheirus mirificus - ornithomimosaur - late cretaceous

just a big guy whose a real fan of eating Rocks. one specimen (MPC-D100/127) was found with over 1,400 gastroliths in its stomach!! not my choice of meal, but seeing as i dont spend my life eating 60 million year old flora, i can't really judge em.
