Last year's Therizinosaurus cheloniformis, one of the most enigmatic theropods, is known only from a shoulder girdle and forelimb with enormous (over half a meter long) claws, as well as partial leg material from the Maastrichtian of Mongolia. Therizinosaurus was initially described by paleontologist Evgeny Maleev as a giant turtle, but remains of related species from Mongolia and China indicate that it was a dinosaur relatively closely related to birds. Like other representatives of its family, it may have had a large abdomen and a wide pelvis, as well as a small skull with leaf-shaped teeth designed for grazing vegetation. The claws were relatively straight and strongly compressed laterally. According to stress distribution studies, they likely served more of a display function than anything else.

Nothronychus
“There. Are. Dinosaurs. Here. And I’m not talking about the seabirds I weigh for a living, I’m talking about the non avian dinosaurs, the ones that are supposed to be dead. I came across them while venturing into the woods near the shoreline, and as long as I didn’t get too close they paid no attention to me. Though I did get too close to one trying to get a closer look, and it raised its arms and the feathers on the bottom of its neck in what I assume is some sort of threat display. I didn’t have enough space on the last page to say this, but I’m actually a big dino nerd, which is part of why I’m so excited about finding these things, more so than most people probably. And judging from the long neck, fat bodies, and long claws, these are probably some kind of therizinosaurs. Not sure which one, since this is the first time I’m seeing one in the flesh, but it’s a truly surreal sight. Maybe I’ll find other dinosaurs when I go exploring some more? I don’t know, I’m just pushing my luck. Here’s some sketches of the things I drew while observing them”. -Abby

The Maniraptoran Alphabet (Part 3)
Part 3/5 of my dinosaur alphabet! Some of my favorite species in the whole set in this batch, but I'll let you guess which ones those are :)
