My dad told me recently that the most important public health workers are garbage collectors and janitors. So much of our health relies on a clean environment. These people do some of the most important work in society. If we learned in dirty public environments full of garbage, we’d all be sick. I cannot thank these people enough for the valuable work that they do.

A couple years ago, the custodial staff at my old highschool went on strike as they tried to sort out some issues with the school board and stuff. They still came to work, and cleaned up any urgent or emergency messes (vomit, bathroom disasters, hazardous spills, etc) but otherwise didn’t clean up the hallways or classrooms for about a month. By the end, the hallways were lined with garbage and dust, some of us had to wipe our own desks down if we wanted to sit at them (note: this was a school of 800+students, one building). There were some hallways and staircases (where the younger kids hung out) that you just didn’t walk through. The cafeteria was off limits for anyone sane of mind. It got to a point that a group of us were organizing a student walk-out in support of the janitorial union so that the whole case can be over with (we were told we may get expelled if we did that, and that it probably wouldn’t help matters anyway, so we didn’t)

On the first Monday back after the strike was over, kids walked into the school and were visibly in awe of the contrast between what the school was and how it was cleaned. My class applauded the head of the janitorial staff (who was my friend, shout out to Drew), students thanked them for their work on the announcements, and overall everybody was being nicer and generally more grateful for the work they do.

Don’t take the cleaning staff if any place for granted, you have no idea what things would look like without them there.

I need to talk about this scene because it’s so different from the typical way pep talks go. 

Moana has just suffered a tremendous defeat and been abandoned by Maui, her demi-god ally. She’s understandably upset- the heart of Te Fiti has to be restored or decay will consume her island. And yet she’s just one teenage girl on a damaged canoe- how is she supposed to face down Te Ka, actual vengeful Lava monster? 

Her fairy godmother grandmother’s spirit doesn’t come in with a magical fix, insist her doubts are baseless and/or bluster that she should just get on with the impossible. She comforts her and tells her it was too big a task to expect of her (all true!) and then tells her it’s okay to give up, that she will be there with unconditional support to help her go home, no guilt or shame. 

THIS. NEVER. HAPPENS. IN. STORIES.

And it should. “Encouragement” is so often a lot like bullying in narratives, even towards characters that are children. “I know you have it in you (even though you were just soundly beaten)! Now get back out there (even though you’re miserable)!” 

Instead, Gramma waits until Moana herself realizes that she’s not ready to give up, through self reflection. She wasn’t there to insist that Moana “suck it up”, but simply to “remind [her] that come what may, [she] know[s] the way”. 

That is awesome.

Coming quick at you, all the help that had been sent to my Island, is apparently on hold. Also the U.S. won’t open the borders so other countries can send aid and Trump is tweeting about it’s our fault. Puerto Rico has been an U.S. territory since 1898 and to this day we have no control of what comes through our borders because of The Jones Act.

You wanna help Puerto Rico? Call your Representative and your Senators and tell them to waive/repeal/ban The Jones Act.

We need to reconstruct and rise up again, not to be dragged while we’re down. We don’t need to be reminded of the country’s debt when there are towns that can’t be reached almost 7 days after Hurricane Maria, when power is still out and there’s no running water and communications are down. We don’t fucking need some inept talking about our debt, instead of opening the borders so doctors and engineers come and help, so other countries nearby can come and bring provisions too. So roads can be open and people can be helped.

Again, you wanna help? Call your Representative and your Senators and tell them to waive/ban/repeal The Jones Act.

Sometimes we feel powerless. This doesn’t have to be one of those times.

There are 3.5 million people in Puerto Rico (Americans, not that it matters) with limited or no access to potable water. And there’s a law called the Jones Act that is impeding supplies from getting through. 

The law says that ships going between US ports must be built in America, sailed by Americans, and fly the American flag. Problem is, only two percent of all the world’s cargo is carried by compliant ships. And most of those are off somewhere else. 

President Trump can waive the Act to allow foreign vessels to dock. He waived it after hurricanes Harvey and Irma. He needs to do it again.

Please call your representatives and have them demand a waiver for Puerto Rico. Here’s how:

1. Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and follow the prompts to reach your Senator/Congress Member.

2. Read the script below, filling in the blanks with your information.

“Hi, my name is [NAME], I am a voting constituent living in [CITY/TOWN] and my zip code is [ZIP CODE].

I’m calling to urgently request that [YOUR SENATOR / CONGRESS MEMBER’S NAME] please call DHS to demand an immediate waiver of the Jones Act so that additional rescue and relief resources can get to Puerto Rico. 

The destruction caused in Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria has been significant, comparable in scale to Katrina.  The federal government’s response needs to be increased immediately.  We cannot allow a Caribbean “Katrina” to unfold. The safety of 3.5 million U.S. citizens is at stake.
