Made a little gif of Legosi and Haru
Dinner with the parents
Chapter 125 is a pretty important chapter. Not much happens in it as such, it is essentially filler. But I like it for several reasons, especially since I feel it tells us a lot about us Haru’s family.
The chapter starts with Haru’s parents reading a newspaper article about inter species marriage.
They are… surprisingly neutral about it :)
(Also, there is an ad on the front page for the 13th “Beastars” book:P)
Anyways, Haru’s mom and dad being indifferent about the subject means that they are open minded enough to not be repulsed by it, but they are not downright praising the new times. Just noticing that it is happening and that it would not have happened when they were young. Also, Haru’s dad makes a comment about not being worried since Haru is a “smart girl”, so it probably means he wouldn’t be THAT thrilled about a different species boyfriend.
Meaning it can go either way when Legosi is introduced to the family.
Haru’s dad meets Legosi by chance as our wolf follows Haru home. Legosi is naturally a bit nervous meeting the father of his great love, Haru thinks the situation is kinda awkward, and Haru’s dad is kinda weirded out by the fact that his daughter knows a wolf.
Admit it, YOU would be a bit weirded out if your kid was on friendly terms with a former natural enemy.
The good thing about this chapter is that we so to say don’t get it spelled out what the characters are thinking. It’s show, don’t tell(meaning that what I’m doing right now is kinda redundant, but bear with me). But we are not told about how Haru’s dad feels about the wolf, we can only guess.
One thing is for sure; Haru’s dad is polite enough to invite the young male inside from the rain and even ask him to stay for dinner.
… which in retrospective might have been a bad idea since Legosi is much bigger than rabbits. The chopsticks are too small for him illustrates this point.
But what is interesting here is how okay Haru’s family is about Legosi coming for a visit. Haru’s siblings lightly poke fun of him, Haru’s mom praises the wolf for having a good appetite, everything is fine besides that Haru’s dad is a bit on edge, but he is too polite to let the others know. Makes sense that an open-minded young lady comes from an open-minded family. Sure, it got weird for a second when Legosi said that he could eat “anything” but it went well.
But the crowning moment of the chapter was the ride home.
Besides that it is just plain fun to see a big dude being cramped inside a small car as if he was a circus clown, it also makes Legosi look even more vulnerable in a situation where he very much IS that. He is inside a car with the guy who could one day become his father-in-law. And Haru’s dad is alone in a car with a big meat eater that he is not sure how his daughter knows, so he is feeling awkward as well.
But he becomes the person with the most power in the vertical when Legosi decides to tell him that he loves his daughter.
Here is the thing…
Legosi is not asking for Haru’s dad to give his approval as such. He is not asking for his blessings, he is just stating that he loves Haru. But he still looks so worried and small(especially since he is cramped up in a tiny car), and he should. This is a guy that he is going to have a relationship to, whether he likes it or not. But will it be a good or bad one? He is bizarrely enough at the mercy of this little bunny.
But Haru’s dad looks like he is no longer worried. He finally understands what is going on. And for the first time that night, instead of thinking of Legosi as a wolf, he thinks of him as a young male who came for dinner and how he acted.
And he thinks the young male was VERY well-behaved. Exceptionally even. And he now realizes that there was a reason to why his daughter smiled at Legosi through the entire meal.
So he says:
Not only is it an invitation to come again, he even promises to get a pair of chopsticks his size, meaning he expects Legosi to come for dinner MANY times.
So simple. So well-written.
I realize this is an animal crossing meme but as an astrophysicist I was really excited for a second that someone was finally seeing the light on how fricking difficult and a huge waste of time it would be to try to terraform Mars
