Aright, I really, really wanted to read a story about Jason and Royale. So I wrote one myself!

Jason watched the scene unfold, when suddenly a wave of dizziness hit him. It felt as though the ground beneath his feet wasn’t solid, but something soft and swaying, like fabric. It was the aftereffect of spending too long at sea and then returning to land—land sickness. The whole world seemed to spin. He steadied himself against the railing, drawing on his training as he slowed his breathing.

I've been playing Dispatch this past week and enjoying it - but I couldn't help thinking how this game proved that we could have an awesome Oracle game - if only DC wanted to give us that...
I'd probably focus a little less on the dispatching in the "Oracle Simulator" (although I really like the gameplay for that in Dispatch!) and a bit more on information gathering/coming up with plans of attack based on said info (something like the detective work in TellTale Batman), hacking, and just the sheer struggle of coordinating all of that.
Anyway, I couldn't stop thinking about it and wanted some visualization of it - so here is a menu and loading screen/desktop view I put together in Renpy :)

In which Jason can very mildly break the fourth wall enough to understand certain stuff doesn't make any fucking sense (because retcons) and feel like he's onto something that no one else is (how pointless some things are), but not enough to understand he's a character in a comic book written by someone.
So he revives and bathes in the Pit and has his breakdown because Batman didn't avenge him and everything, but then somewhere down the line he starts to realize some things are... off. Because people are saying he died when he went after the Joker but he never did, he went after his bio mom. And why did he found a death certificate saying he died at 15, he was on 7th grade when it happened, he was 13 at most. And what's all that crap people keep spouting about him being a teenage seething with rage when he was Robin, sure he had his moments but he was just some kid, he was confused and sad and yes angry, but he wasn't a pit of rage like they say, he felt pity for his dad's murderer ffs — who is Two-Face. Wait, wasn't it Killer-Croc??
So no wonder he feels like he knows what's best for Gotham, clearly no one else could see their own weird ass fake memories. Not Jason though. Jason can pinpoint exactly how useless superheroing is because it will never end, he knows it with certainty. He also knows killing evil homicidal villains isn't that much of a big deal either, he's saving many more people this way (he doesn't understand that very deep down, a very instinctive part of him knows none of this is real, it's all fiction).

- before this, rose is kidnapped and escapes but i didnt include that in the list because shes not doing much until these issues. but she has things to do in these and has great moments of lili trying to protect her. dont bother reading any of the actual deathstroke stuff because i do not care what hes up to

- shes not in this til the last few pages but i get the content of rose mourning her mother where i can bc it does not get brought up for like 20 years after this. also rose being a badass is always welcome to me

- this one is almost entirely rose's pov!!! granted shes not exactly the center of the story but still! it also starts showing her meta abilities and precognition which is so slay of her
New Titans #126
- this is the first time she gets like. an actual personality. and its great. i lov her dynamics with the other titans and i love kyle and donna kind of trying to parent her. and also shows a little bit more of how she feels about her mom hehe. in the issue before this she puts a gun to someones head which i think is also worth reading that moment of her however. its a one page scene and it never gets brought up again so i didnt bother including it

- honestly i think that roses entire time nannying lian is worth reading but she doesnt do a Lot in each issue so i felt bad including the whole thing sdjafhadsf but she has scattered appearances from #25-39 and theyre all FANTASTIC. one of my favorite eras of rose for sure

- this is her joining her father :( terrible hate kill but its a very important part of her story. also she has a random family here which ??? i mean sure i guess. love that everyone was playing hot potato with rose for like 10 years though

- calls herself ravager for the first time so its kind of important. honestly though i wasnt even gonna include this at first but decided that it was important enough to throw in. shes only on the last page of this though

- this is where she loses her eye (see: takes her own knife and stabs it out) so its pretty significant. also bart reaching out to her and trying to help her is sweet :) i dont really care about brother blood at all though so i didnt include the rest of this arc but it starts at #9 if youre really interested
Batgirl v1 #64
- this one is extremely biased im gonna be real. i just love batgirl 2000 and this issue was really good for both of them honestly, its the two of them fighting and does a good job showing rose's relationship with her dad during this time and showing her skills
Nightwing #112-115
- this one was just so much fun. i wouldnt call it 100% in character but theres a lot of good stuff about rose wanting a family and its rly sweet :( its also hilarious to me and its so fun to read it

- leaving her father!!! she really only shows up on a couple pages here but you know. its pretty significant.
GENERAL WARNING FOR TEEN TITANS: a lot of teen titans was written by geoff johns and. i dont know how to put it other than that hes VERY geoff johns about it. there are bits of misogyny and racism in pretty much every issue. even after johns stops writing it still has some extremely iffy parts. so just be warned :(

- this one originally wasnt even on the list because it comes with HEAVY disclaimers. this issue includes rose trying to rape tim, which i consider to be the worst moment in that entire book, and probably the most out of character thing rose has ever done. thank you geoff johns. HOWEVER this issue also has a lot of really nice moments with rose and eddie that i really enjoyed :( so just. disregard the first few pages if you read this
Teen Titans #40-41
- you will quickly find out that i am a sucker for rose and joey being siblings. in all honesty i know very little about joey but i DO know that he and rose have rly sweet moments in a lot of these

- a lot of deathstroke stuff. mostly boring but rose does get to fight her dad here :) and also some more rose & joey moments. though do be warned as a cassandra cain fan these issues did send me flying into a blind rage because she is so out of character
Teen Titans #57 & #60
- precognition!!! rose being a badass!!! my love!!!!!! this is a good issue. it does go back on a lot of what its already gone over by saying "ooo rose is so murderous and dangerous!!" but. whatever. i like it when shes murderous. these are all part of an arc that goes from #56-60 if you want the full story but these two are the ones that rose has the most to do in. then #60 leads into Terror Titans which. um. was not good. very out of character for rose and just not an interesting story at all. but i mean if you want to read it she is in it
Teen Titans #71
- rose-centric issues my beloved hehe :) this issue is pretty good and sets off her story in the second feature starting in #72

- rose rejoining the team!!!!! which i have mixed feelings on because it was clearly a "the writer wanted her there but didnt want to do the work to put her back so they just threw her in" situation which is fine i guess. it ignores a lot of whats already happened though :/ but!!!! lillian worth mention!!! woo!!!!

- damian and rose's dynamic is so fucking funny and i love it. they are iconic together its amazing

- final teen titans arc!! rose isnt specifically doing a lot but she does have some really good moments here. also she has an interaction with mia for like 2 panels so i need to cut those 2 panels out and frame them <3 but be warned. the writer was clearly going in the rose/conner direction for some reason which. um. hm.
Batgirl v2 #2-4
- ICONIC. i have issues with cass's characterization in this but rose is wonderful. she can be patricidal as a treat <3 shes planning ahead and shes a good fighter and shes murderous. what more do you need.
Teen Titans #70, Titans #13, Vigilante #6
- these are all part of a bigger crossover, Titans #12 and Vigilante #5 come before these but rose doesnt have anything to do there and i did not read them because i dont really care about the story of this one. but oh my god. this has some FANTASTIC rose & joey content. all of their interactions in this killed me esp the last part :(
Teen Titans #77-78
- oughghggogugughggh this one was so sad fr. i love it when rose tries to kill her dad but there were so many parts in this where i was full of pain. but also joey and rose moment hiiii !! but most importantly lili is revealed to be alive here!!! yippee!!!!

- hiiiii im actually adding this one to the list nearly a year after i originally made it lol <3 but i love this issue so much and i cant believe i never added it. most of the reason i like it is because i like it when she commits patricide and like half of this comic is dedicated to her kicking his ass then getting her ass kicked. god i love her

Tim Drake, the ghost of Jason Todd, and the function of victim-blaming in Terror Management Theory
Ever hear someone victim blaming and wonder to yourself, why are you doing this? Why is it more comfortable to assume it was their fault? What does that say about your view of the world, and what percentage of reality are you willing to sacrifice to lean into that comfort?

-All of this comes from a social psychology class on terror management theory I had two years ago that did not, in fact, study batman as an example. So the science of TMT isn't mine but the ties to victim-blaming and dc analysis are. I wish we had studied batman in class.
-Tim is far from the only character who victim-blames Jason in dc. However I do not specialize in social psychology and do not have the skills to analyse everything that goes into the victim-blaming in this world, so we're staying in our lane and focusing on what we do know enough to yap about.
-I acknowledge the importance of classism in Jason's treatment and victim-blaming, I think it's important to highlight and human behaviour rarely only has one cause; i'm not gonna talk much about the interaction between classism and terror management here because I don't have anything interesting to say aside from "well, jason's background made him easier for tim to victim-blame and the two bias fed eachother" but like just assume it's always there in the background of this analysis. If you think there are more complicated/interesting ways in which classism weighs into the interplay, feel free to complete it!
-obviously the real reason why tim victim-blames is that dc victim-blames. That's it, that's the meta. It's mighty fucked up, and tim isn't a real person. However, I think it's still pretty realistic, and most of all I believe it can tell us a lot not only as an illustration of how victim-blaming works but also why this meta exists, and asking questions like why is tim blaming jason are interesting when wondering why dc is telling us to blame jason. That, and also overanalyzing people who don't exist is fun.
-this isn't particularly pro or anti tim. Personally I like Tim as a character, so I'm not particularly interested in bashing him anyway. Victim blaming is not good, and just because we're talking about a realistic explanation does not mean it's an excuse, and this isn't intented to shame or demonize him either, flawed characters are interesting, etc erc. Honestly how you or I feel about Tim genuinely does not matter in this conversation.
The "belief in a fair world" is a cognitive bias studied in social psychology that makes us believe that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people. (Please note that this isn't here intended as a commentary of any religious belief. I'm not talking about, say, a divine reward after death, but in the belief that good things happen to good people and bad things to bad people. It is something that is discussed in TMT, and people smarter than me have ideas about that, but I'm not all that clever, and it's not the point here, so let's focus about what the point is.)
The belief in a fair world is very useful, because it helps regulate empathy and is very important in terror management.
"You're wearing Jason Todd's uniform. The 'bad' Robin."
Terror management, in Terror Management Theory (TMT) asks the question: how do we as people handle the knowledge that we could die at any time? Note that the name "terror" can be confusing: we don't exactly have panic attacks every time we see a car safety infomercial or a cigarette pack. That's because the terror is managed. (If you want to see an example of what it looks like someone whose terror management is extremely dysfunctional, check out Ionesco's diary, it's super poetic and interesting.)
With belief in a fair world in TMT, what happens is you tell yourself "this happened because this person is bad, and I am good, so it's not gonna happen to me", and so you feel safer. It's a coping strategy.
Agentivity : What power do I have to impact the world around me?
Another coping strategy that's important in terror management is the modulation of agentivity. What's terrifying about life is how little control we have over the world, and especially things that happen to us. Not unlike fictional characters, we don't want to be end up as victims of the narrative. So another bias, that feeds both into victim blaming and belief in a fair world, is an overestimation of the control you have on yourself in reaction to things that threaten this control.
"You think my anger will boil over, the way Jason's did. I can assure you, it won't!"
Basically the people on the internet that comment "just eat well and take good care of your body if you don't wanna be disabled/die young" under posts about disability struggles are doing exactly that. Seeing the post about disability exposes them to threats of loss of control over their body, life, and threats of physical harm/death, so they readjust their stance in reaction to the discomfort.
It's the idea that if you're safe enough, smart enough, careful enough, etc. then because you are in control of the narrative nothing bad will happen... So it becomes easy, in a way. "The only thing you have to do to be safe is be good." That makes the world feel safer. And the people who get hurt? Well, it's their own fault. They didn't put in the effort, they didn't think, they didn't listen. You just have to put in the effort.

Road safety infomercials lied to you and also fuck the government
The twisted thing with belief in a fair world and overestimation of agentivity is that these are defense mechanisms. Basically this is the reason car accidents and smoking kills infomercials are counter-productive and forced empathy is more complicated than you'd believe.
What happens is you see something very horrible (ie people brutally dying in a video that does its damndest to appeal to your empathy). And it works! But empathy is only useful up to a point, and if there's too much empathy you're gonna wanna regulate. Basically you spend your life trying not to think about the fact that you could literally choke on your spit and die right now, and then you get violently hit with a brutal reminder of your own mortality, which is unbearable. So you activate your trustworthy coping strategies, belief in a fair world and overestimation of agentivity, to protect yourself. Bam, solution found, you are not in actual danger of dying (because you are good and you put in the effort and the people who died just didn't cut it) so you don't have to worry about the unbearable weight of death. Crisis averted, -1 point empathy, +1 point victim-blaming.
However, that shit is dangerous, it comes at a cost, because overestimation of agency and belief in a fair world don't exist in a vacuum of coping strategies, they're also beliefs upon which you build your actions. So when you incorrectly evaluate how safe you are, because you think you're good and in control and this kind of stuff only ever happens to other people, you're gonna act in consequence. That's how you get people more prone to reckless driving after watching a road safety infomercial, people less likely to stop smoking after seeing a picture of some kind of cancer and "smoking kills" and that's why the words smoking kills have not made anyone stop smoking ever in the history of smoking.
The government knows this, btw. We've been telling them for years, and so does the tobacco industry. Fuck them.
The victim-blaming is honestly really interesting because aside from the fact dc is retroactively trying to convince us it was always real (and the very fucked up meta that opens), it actually makes a lot of sense for the characters to make these bad decisions, and it's so interesting how Bruce and Tim's bias feed into eachother to make it worse. We deserved a narrative that confronted and analyzed that.
Instead, we got a cautionary tale, a narrative that agreed with that, and tried to convince us that it was right, and I can't help but wonder why and what exactly that says about dc that they are trying to do that. Are you alright, dc? Is your decision to brutally murder children in a comic traditionally marketed to children making you uncomfortable? Is that why Jason and Steph, upon their death becoming imminent, are suddenly drawn as much older looking than in previous appearances?
In the end, I think the most important question is: what are you willing to sacrifice, to avoid the discomfort?
