At least she sounds almost as baffled as you feel about the jadeblood’s babbling, even if her face stays blank as a still lake. 

“Armor? Ha, no, I wouldn’t have any call for that. And I don’t really shoe my livestock except my lusus… though maybe she’s needing that done, I’ll have to check.” A pause, as you think over her words at your own pace. Successful lowblood businesses need all the help they can get, and you’d feel bad if you wasted her time. “You make tools, though? Maybe nails? Or I could use a new hammer… or… probably more of a job for a tinker, but I really need to sharpen my hatchet here…”

You whisk the hatchet out of your syllabus and hold it out to her. The blade’s badly notched, now that you look at it, and worn thin from too many turns at a grindstone.  “Or… maybe it’s a new one I’m wanting now. Do you have any on hand, or is this all custom only?

“I can make tools, nails, that sort’a thing. I do plenty ‘a work outside of armor and weapons.” You take the hatchet and give it a thorough inspection. “So are y’a livestock farmer exclusively or do y’grow food as well?”

Well-used, but getting to the point where replacing it is inevitable rather than preventable. Even the handle is worn, so slightly indented where they must put their hands on it the most. Must have lasted them a while too, they must care for their tools. Your expressions softens, just a little, at how well this thing was held together, even in the state it was in currently.

You hand it back to them and lead them to a wall full of hatchets, hammers, and other tools of varying sizes and weights. “These are all th’ones I have on hand, but I can tweak ‘em or even make a new one if there’s somethin’ specific you’d like.”
