“I know that you want to show how “enlightened” you are to your friends and family or how much you’ve “changed” by going to a Third World country for your yoga retreat by getting a spiritual tattoo. But honestly, you shouldn’t do it. In fact, getting such a tattoo ironically shows how “unenlightened” you are. Somehow you will contaminate that tattoo and that symbol is ultimately meant for a sacred and clean space — which is not on our bodies that sin every single day.”

It just felt so weird to be in a place where the majority of people look like you, a place where you feel like you should belong, yet you really don’t. It’s like looking the part, but not actually being it. Every time someone spoke to me in either Tamil or Hindi, I felt a sense of disappointment in myself when I stared back at them, confused and unable to converse in a dialect that I was seemingly expected to know.
