character parallels: dina and mel

watched a character analysis on dina & ellie and well…yes! unfortunately, doomed.

it made me think of another connection though.

throughout the game we see the characters take turns paralleling each other and it’s easily missed the way dina and ellie parallel mel and abby. specifically that period before they reach the theater and they’re looking for abby’s friends.

any time ellie and dina found a friend dead before ellie got to question and kill them herself, dina would ask her how she felt. question her. challenge her. ask questions that would lead one to understand or even empathize with the wolves that participated in joel’s murder.

she, quite early on, brought up the fact that they let ellie and tommy live when they didn’t have to and how that lead her to believe there must’ve been a reason for it. why just joel?

ellie ofc wanting to protect joel’s image and avenge him, understandably does not want to understand, let alone empathize with anyone that was involved and shuts down dina’s attempts again and again.

and dina not wanting to threaten her connection with ellie (which is already on shaky terms) concedes again and again and instead focuses on continuing to prove her loyalty.

with mel and abby we get glimpses of the same dynamic. mel being the voice of reason and challenging others to emphasize. wether it be with the killing of joel and how she wishes she wasn’t apart of it or the killing of seraphites and how they’re “just kids”. abby ofc usually being there to shut her down.

mel, like dina, likely realizes sometime during their journey to jackson that she is indeed pregnant and tells owen. she doesn’t let that stop her though from proving her loyalty and that she can still be useful and not a burden

just for owen to then (try to) take the out of a “bigger than them” mission and say without saying she was never the greater priority, like ellie does with dina later at the farm :/

his heart practically beating in his throat, eyes bloodshot and his forehead dewy. it's like he's paralyzed. completely in awe as he watches himself disappear inside you. over and over again.

not even you calling his name can take him out of this trance, nor the way you plant kisses on his face as a check for a sign of life — he's completely lost in you and would never dare to find his way back.
