Summary: After the death of his wife, Michael Samuelle finds a lifeline in a compassionate stranger named Nikita.
Sometimes, when the memory comes, it comes in fragments of distorted sounds and flashes. The metallic taste of adrenaline rises up in his throat like bile. When it finally presses through in its entirety, Michael can’t help but flinch in shame.
It begins right before the ambush.
They’re in the outskirts of Amsterdam. Michael and Simone move in tandem through the decommissioned electrical generating station that serves as a front for Glass Curtain’s compound. The light of dusk was strange, a sickly green, as it seeps through the broken windows. It feels too bright for the hour. The shadows it casts are long and menacing and the rusted machinery provides plenty of hidden spaces.
Simone notices it first.
“Michael,” she whispers behind him, “something’s wrong.”
He had verified the intel himself. He trusts the data and his reading of it. He shouldn’t have.
“It’s clear,” he tells her after he briefly surveys the silent area. “Keep moving.”
Simone hesitates. It was the smallest pause, almost imperceptible, but later he’ll replay it over and over. In that same breath, it was as if she wanted to insist they fall back and call for the backup team she’d requested in the briefing.
He doesn’t listen.
They push forward, hiding in shadows, until suddenly the silence they inhabit shatters.
There’s a flash, an overwhelming cloud of dust, and a vibrating, concussive roar that seems to swallow the world.
Michael pivots, firing blindly. Instinct takes over. Shapes move through the smoke. Automatic gunfire cracks against the surrounding brick. He feels the heat of a bullet graze his shoulder and then the pull of Simone’s hand on his vest.
“Left!” she shouts.
Michael follows her directions and fires upon a pair of armed hostiles. He crosses underneath the stairways of the abandoned station, seeking a better position. Simone follows behind him.
“They’re circling—”
Her voice cuts off.
Michael turns in time to see her stumble. No, not stumble…drop, unnaturally fast. Her body folds in on itself as she clutches her side.
“Simone!”
He turns and lunges toward her, but a blast from the right throws him sideways into a wall. The shock rattles his skull. His vision goes white, then black, and then an agonizing blur.

They have this little game of pretending to not know each other at fancy events and Hannibal always ends up flirting with him (Even after years Hannibal still can’t believe they are married)

After the death of his wife, Michael Samuelle finds a lifeline in a compassionate stranger named Nikita.
When he walks out of Section One, Michael really doesn’t have a destination in mind. The subterranean high-tech corridors of steel, concrete, and glass were not only claustrophobic but ripe with reminders of what he’d lost. When he emerges onto the city street, with its pedestrians and honking horns, he almost regrets his decision. The afternoon was sunny to the point that it took his eyes a second to adjust, and the skies were a clear cerulean blue. It was a beautiful day to be outside.
He hates it.
At the first café he comes across, he sits on the terrace and orders an espresso with sugar. Simone often took her coffee this way.
Michael tells himself that he came here for the quiet. But really, he came here looking for ghosts. Simone had loved cafés—the smell of roasted beans, the uneven tables, and the way the sunlight spilled through the windows at certain times of the day. He can almost hear her laugh when he closes his eyes. Almost.
Behind him, the bell on the door chimes softly as people enter and exit. Business is brisk.
A passing patron jostles his table slightly, and Michael glances up in time to see a woman politely apologize for the disturbance.
“Excusez-moi,” she says before entering.
He sees her, but he doesn’t really see her. She was just one of countless people in this city that wasn’t Simone.
Despite the grief consuming him, life in Paris proceeds as usual. Traffic, laughter, and the low hum of the living taunt him. Michael stirs his espresso absently. He stares into the street before him, watching and trying to fathom how his increasing detachment hasn’t resulted in his immediate death.
There’s been no decrease in his responsibilities at Section. No simple assignments to give him something less to worry about. He’s maintained expected efficiency, but Michael’s world holds little meaning. He’s going through the motions of his life like an automaton, just waiting for someone to be quick enough to catch him off guard.
Michael’s not suicidal, but he’d almost welcome having the decision taken away from him.

I've signed up for the smallfandombag on Dreamwidth for the fourth year in a row. I think it's going to be another AU. Hopefully, I can keep my participation streak alive for a total of five years. That's a good and solid number. Although, stopping is inevitable.
