John says Alecto turned out “wrong” after her resurrection but we already kind of know it’s the necromancy itself which is wrong. Do you think maybe Alecto’s is just the only resurrection which actually reveals the necromancy for what it is? Because it was John’s first go and he didn’t know what it would look like and then after he did he took steps to mask the true nature of the resurrection on all subsequent occasions? So it’s not the Alecto is “wrong” and everyone else is “right” it’s more that Alecto is what she is and everyone else is also that, just beneath a layer of illusion or fakery?
i like where you're heading with that! and i agree, alecto's resurrection reveals necromancy for what it truly is (bad lol). idk about the specifics tho, muir told us essentially nothing and john's a pathological liar. your ask actually helped me realize i've been trying to make a certain argument about this for weeks now without fully understanding it. i submit the following theory for your consideration: alecto is "not a normal human being" bc she's the resurrection beast of earth bound into human form. john "resurrected" alecto the same way harrow's parents "committed a type of resurrection" when they conceived her, i.e. by killing lots of people simultaneously. harrow's a powerful necromancer bc she's the minor beast of an entire generation of ninth children. alecto's a powerful necromancer bc she's the resurrection beast of earth. perfect lyctorhood may mean power swapping, not sharing. either way, john stole necromancy from alecto
i propose this to you in the context of many esoteric rants about the harrowing of hell and locked tomb as thwarting access to the river beyond. i've been using this abstract language to describe john and alecto's lyctoral well as the "source of all necromancy" without explaining what i really meant. what i meant is-- john wasn't a necromancer until he ascended with alecto. tazmuir says as much in her glossary
The Nine Houses came into being ten thousand years ago with the “Resurrection,” a response to the mass dying-off of the system’s planets and sun that destroyed all life. When the first necromancer—the Emperor—ascended, he resurrected the planets and the people to become the Nine Houses.
there's JOHN'S version of events:
One moment I was a man, and then the next moment I was the Necrolord Prime, the first necromancer, and more importantly, a landlord with no tenants.
and then there's augustine's fact check:
You’re God, John. But—as the Edenites are fond of pointing out—you were once a man. So whither that transition? Where does your power come from? Even if the Resurrection had been the greatest thanergy bloom ever triggered, it would drain away over time. And then Mercy said to me—in a moment of true Mercy vileness—she said, What is God afraid of?
this is part of augustine's epiphany! john's power comes from alecto, has always come from alecto. "the man who became god and the god who became man" is a reference to their ASCENSION. john portrays alecto as the mother of all necromancy bc she IS
D’you know why you’re really the First? Because in a very real way, you and the others are A.L.’s children … There would be none of you, if not for her.
john admits he "committed the same act" as harrow's parents without elaborating on specifics, which leads me to believe he also harnessed a genocide to create some sort of super necro
To all intents and purposes, your mother and father committed a type of resurrection . . . They did something nigh-on impossible. I know, because I have committed the same act, and I know the price I had to pay. Thalergetic modification of an embryo is difficult enough, but to achieve the same thing with thanergy…
i've puzzled over 157 of htn for awhile now but it's currently our only mechanism for shoving multiple souls into a human body so roll with me here. as far as i can tell, it doesn't require necromancy to work, just lots of people dying at once (which tracks, since john tells harrow "this was... all so different... before we discovered the scientific principles") harrow's a strong necro bc she's the product of her parents' genocide, "a walking miracle. a unique theorem. a natural wonder" (once again, JOHN'S descriptors)
Gideon said, “You can’t just control whether or not you’re carrying a necro.” “Yes, you can,” said Harrow. “If you have the resources, and are willing to pay the price of using them.” The hairs on the back of Gideon’s neck rose, wetly. “Harrow,” she said slowly, “by resources, are you saying—” “Two hundred children,” said Harrowhark tiredly.
if alecto is actually the resurrection beast of earth, the souls of 10 billion people confined to one vessel, she should wield godlike power. and yet she is simply portrayed as john's "bodyguard," never a necromancer. teacher describes how "even the devil bent for god to put a leash around her neck," the leash meaning lyctorhood, john's entrapment, the eternal entanglement of their immortal souls, that first power exchange between the man who became god and the god who became man. harrow's dreams are trying to TELL us things, there's a point to each and every one of them and the point of the harrow nova AU could be that perfect lyctorhood means role reversal! that tazmuir interview about "turning the tables" in atn could be a JOKE
this is where my nonsense rants about oceans and drains and liminal spaces were always headed. this is what i meant when i said the locked tomb is john and alecto's lyctoral well
So that is Lyctorhood . . . To walk with the dead forever … enormous power, recycled within you, from the ultimate sacrifice … to make yourself a tomb.
the tomb is LITERALLY (literally!!!) the source of all necromancy. it's what's preventing souls from passing to the river beyond, what's trapping ghosts at the bottom. it's how john "robbed death itself," the reason we're all HERE. the tomb!! The actual Locked Tomb!!!
ok somebody tell me to calm down i’m literally sitting here smiling like an idiot after ONE facetime call. like how do you catch feelings after one week
I really don’t understand why they cut everything I know though. It seemed like they were really building up to it with all the tokens they showed and how they made a point to show ninas relationship with abuela Claudia and then it just never happened it was weird
