our stuff finally got here and now we are getting it all set up. it feels really nice so far. i think this apartment will suit the way we want to use it way better than our old one... we can put our computers and the tv in the same room, and leave our bedroom just for sleeping and relaxing, and this way we can play video games with friends who come over really easily. im so happy because this wouldnt have been possible in the first apartment we applied for, bbut because we got a different unit than we toured, it was actually significantly bigger than the one we toured and it let us do this!!

the decision to build "suburban style apartments for urban families" i have always found to be quite disgusting. it presupposes that the suburban ideal is correct and urban families and urban life are an aberration. this mentality leads to very bizarre land use, where the ability to house people efficiently and densely is secondary to the appearance and moral correctness of the architecture. the Philadelphia Housing Authority has some really good examples of this south of Temple University, where there are suburban culdesacs and faux-mcmansion duplexes in the heart of the urban core. these were all built by private real estate developers on land that the city cleared.

this stuff that these turn-of-the-century reformers said is all so insane. the notion that immigrants living in tenements should "invest in a parlor"... i cant believe anyone took these people seriously! and then you think about how like public health and social services and urban planning etc all originate with the people who said this kind of stuff.

i hope this is not a weird ask but i saw your photos of philly on a snowy day on a friends blog and i really love them, are you self taught? any recommendations for getting into the art?

I took some photography classes when I was attending college, which were taught by a woman from my church who had been kind of my 'mentor' for a long time beforehand, so i probably learned a lot from her. but i don't think that i know that much and am very much still learning. i have only had my own "real" camera since last year when my wife got me a really nice mirrorless one as a gift. before that i was taking pictures on my phone, and had been doing that for years. i think my only suggestion to get better is to just take a lot of pictures. i go for walks with my wife most days and usually on each walk i find at least one thing i want to take a picture of, and even if most of them never make it anywhere, it's good practice.

Is sizhens doing alright?

yes, shes's doing really well! she hasn't been on tumblr [or social media at all] because it is not very good for her mental health. when she is doing poorly she posts more and when she is doing better she posts less and this has been the case for as long as i can remember, and she's been doing really well and therefore just isn't posting at all.
