wayhaught: one of them is sick but is completely stubborn about definitely NOT being sick, until they eventually cave in and let the other take care of them
I want to start this by saying I’m completely in sufferable to be around when I’m sick and unfortunately I’m always sick so I love this prompt.
The room spins as she leans against the sink, trying to breathe. She can feel the congestion that had worked it’s way from her chest into her sinuses, or maybe vice versa. Either way it’s blocking any air from passing through either nostril. Nicole struggles with her uniform shirt, her arms feeling too heavy to fasten the buttons, but she trudges on because she knows how important it is to not miss work. Her father had drilled that into her through example.
The shower had done little to help, the hot water barely managing to keep the chills at bay. It takes her longer than expected to get dressed, but she manages to at least look presentable.
Stepping out, she doesn’t expect to find Waverly standing there. She doesn’t notice the cellphone in her hand, just the sheer determination in her stance. “You are not going to work.”
“Wav… please don’t yell.” She moves slowly around the apartment, finding her keys on the dresser and her stetson on the hook by the door, all the while being followed by the youngest Earp. “I’m fine.” The room tilts and she pauses.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?”
Waverly is holding up her belt, sidearm and handcuffs in place, her eyebrows raised in challenge. She hadn’t even noticed she didn’t have it and with a sigh she steps towards the brunette who holds it out towards her. Her fingers barely close around it when the shorter woman releases the leather. On a normal day, she had no problem, but today the belt seemed to quadruple in weight, and she feels herself stumbling from the weight of it before an arm wraps around her.
“Just what I thought.” Waverly is smug as she sets the belt on a chair before beginning to unbutton the midnight blue uniform shirt. “Come on. Let’s get you back to bed.”
“I can’t.” Nicole tries to resist but somehow Waverly has grown stronger. “Babe, I have to go to work.”
Waverly does her best to ignore the whining tone in the woman’s voice. “You can’t even lift your gun.” She can hear the rattle in the woman’s chest and she hopes that it’s just a cold. “You’ll probably end up shooting Nedley if there’s an emergency.” She doesn’t even try to strip off the uniform pants until she leads the redhead to the bedroom.
“I don’t want to go back to bed.” Nicole protests. “It’s hot in there.”
They agree to a compromise and Waverly drags the comforter into the living room, covering the woman who was laying on the couch shivering. “I called Nedley and he says don’t you dare come into work and get him sick. I’ve got the doc coming and Gus is making you some soup.”
“I don’t want to see Doc.” Nicole pulls the comforter closer.
“No, Honey. Not Henry. The last thing we need is his trying to poison you with laudnum. I’ve got a real doctor coming.”
“Get in bed with me?” Nicole mumbles, her eyelids drooping.
Waverly presses a kiss to the heated forehead. “If we made it back to the bed I would, but I’m not squishing you trying to fit both of us on this couch.” She sees the woman has drifted off and pushes herself to stand. “Stubborn thing.” She shakes her head with a smile, picking up the belt and sidearm to return it to its place.
“Wav?” The soft voice comes from the couch.
Nicole sniffled. “I’m sick.”
Waverly can’t help but laugh.
