Yoshitaka Amano: The Tale of Genji (2006)
* * * *
“When you stir your rice pudding, Septimus, the spoonful of jam spreads itself round making red trails like the picture of a meteor in my astronomical atlas. But if you stir backwards, the jam will not come together again. Indeed, the pudding does not notice and continues to turn pink just as before. Do you think this is odd?”
― Tom Stoppard, Arcadia

One of Syfy's most overlooked sci-fi fantasies is back on Tubi, reminding viewers how much ambition you can squeeze out of a tiny budget.
There’s a funny little pocket of genre TV that existed before streaming convinced everyone they needed to build empires out of CGI and brooding mythologies. You remember it: the late-aughts stretch where shows like Fringe, Warehouse 13, Primeval, Torchwood, and even the last good years of Stargate Atlantis were all running around with big ideas and only half the infrastructure to pull them off. You can feel the hunger in those shows — the sense that the writers’ rooms were pitching things they absolutely didn’t have the money for, but were going to attempt anyway, because that’s where the fun lived. Sanctuary came out of that era like the scrappy kid on the playground who didn’t bother asking permission. It just showed up swinging.

having thoughts about the use of the word “mere” (meaning “utter,” but also, unless i’m reading wrong, sometimes meaning “only/nothing more than”) in antony and cleopatra. i feel like it comes up in every single scene and maybe i’m losing it but it compels me, as in
1. mere meaning utter/absolute is apt because it’s how every character acts about everything. the titular characters of this play are never moderate about anything; every passion and every action is felt and done at absolute extremes, in part because of their personalities but in part because of how consciously aware they are that they are making history. their legacies are going to exist long after they’re gone and so they have a vested interest in shaping those legacies and so nothing is ever done halfway. but also
2. mere meaning only/nothing more than is also apt, because a lot of this play is breaking DOWN the idea that antony and cleopatra are these towering immortal historical figures. like, 50% if not 75% of this play is antony and cleopatra being passive-aggressive petty-as-fuck adult children throwing tantrums and having fits of jealousy and bothering each other. it’s possible to look at them as shakespeare presents them and think, “really? is this all they are? only this?” they are merely (only) antony and cleopatra; they are merely (utterly) antony and cleopatra.

The world is violent and mercurial — it will have its way with you. We are saved only by love — love for each other and the love that we pour into the art we feel compelled to share: being a parent; being a writer; being a painter; being a friend. We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.
