🚨 URGENT: Escalating Violence Against the LGBTIQ+ Community in Indonesia 🚨

The situation for the LGBTIQ+ community in Indonesia is reaching a critical and dangerous tipping point. Recent government actions, specifically Presidential Regulation No. 111 of 2025, have officially classified the spread of LGBTQI+ culture as a "non-military threat" to the state. This harmful state-level rhetoric has already emboldened anti-LGBT groups, sparking a documented surge in harassment and abuse against LGBT university students during recent Pride Month celebrations.

Tragically, this state-sanctioned hate speech has now escalated into brutal physical violence on the streets.

🛑 Hate Crime Alert in Bogor, West Java 🛑

As reported by Pelangi Nusantara, a targeted and organized series of attacks has just occurred in Bogor:

At least 15+ trans women have been brutally attacked by an anti-LGBT group.

The violence is being actively provoked and documented by an Instagram hate account called @bogorbersihlgbt.

Victims, many of whom are vulnerable trans women surviving by working on the streets, were punched, kicked, doused with urine, and in some cases, stripped naked.

The victims are currently suffering from profound psychological trauma and serious physical injuries.

We cannot stay silent while our community is hunted and harmed. Here is how you can take immediate action to help:

Go to Instagram and report https://www.instagram.com/bogorbersihlgbt/for promoting hate speech and physical violence. Encourage everyone you know to do the same to get this dangerous account taken down.

look I do think its weird that non-Chinese POCs & white people feel so comfortable wearing the qipao, practicing Chinese martial arts and claiming that’s POC solidarity in itself.

The qipao has always been a politicised attire for Chinese fems and anti-imperialism. And it is a risk (fetishised) on chinese fems’ bodies, and has been continuously disrespected and poised as a sex symbol.

Kungfu was an indigenous art form that most Chinese masters traditionally did not want to be shared with non-Chinese; for thousands of years it was a highly guarded closed practice and a site of political anti-Imperialist resistance. This is until the 60s with just 3 Chinese immigrants to US; Lao Bun and Bruce Lee (white Chinese biracial) disregarded the wishes of their own people, and Grandmaster Ark Y. Wong publicly proclaimed he would teach anyone.

And ofc as much as parts of America mocked them for it, other parts of America “celebrates them” for this. From then on it became popularised. It genuinely just iterates the way Chinese people are treated as valuable on insofar as we fork out our heritage for the West’s benefit.

It is mocked when chinese people do it, people gleefully call us weak and hyperfeminine. It was even used by Chinese Americans originally to fight against Sinophobic attacks. But then yall make movies fighting back against white authorities USING our cultural craft 💀 and as if that’s not bad enough, I see people (both Chinese and other POC and white) dressing up as that fucking fetishistic game character w spacebuns and the sexualised qipao.

i also just saw a group of non-Chinese POCs promoting their kungfu movie that had a main cast of ~5 non-Chinese people, and 1 Asian guy as a secondary character; that’s tokenism. Granted it’s an improvement from “karate” kid.

None of these feel like solidarity with Asian folks to me. its just appropriation and orientalism and turning Chinese culture into social capital. And what irks me even more is that its not just white folk doing ts.

i’m not saying “don’t learn chinese martial arts” that ship has obviously sailed and yall won’t give a fuck anyways. And there’s probably some convo to be had about how Chinese Americans teaching other POC Americans martial arts to fight back against white American supremacy IS POC solidarity ON CHINESE PEOPLE’S PART, but has since been quite forgotten by other Americans. and it is even more egregious to me that white Americans are engaging in it after the history of how Chinese Americans had to use Kungfu to defend against them.

Also if you can only imagine “solidarity” if and when you wear a qipao, then actually I don’t want your “solidarity”.

ATM the more realistic demand is to recognise that the indigenous craft you’re engaging in, was stolen and exported for your consumption; and then ask yourself how you’re gonna engage with it, knowing this.

The denial of SEA Chinese as SEAsians, people RIOTING in the THOUSANDS against ICERD declarations of racial equality, SEA locals AND the govt telling us to “go back to where we came from” when we’ve shaped the Malay Archipelago, established nomadic and trade routes and families in SEA, alongside other ethnic minorities since the Majapahit period & Song Dynasty. And how yall continue to fucking deny how Chinese people have shaped spirituality, creoles, values and culture in SEAsia; if we aren’t even talking about economy or infrastructure built off the backs of indentured slavery & labour exploitation of Chinese and Indian coolies.

Not to mention yall are fucking racist towards South Asians AND the Black Asians and Melanesians in your lands, so do NOT even try to pull the “SEAs are less racist and anti-Black than EAs” to me, I know that’s fucking separatist egotist bullshit. Yall suck just as much as EAsian bigots in EAsia.

You can fool all these American and Western libs, but real ones know SEAsian ethnic majorities have been fuckin Sinophobic since Srivijaya Empire; literally do NOT fucking talk to me about “they call us ugly and migrate here and change up the economy :((” if you don’t give a fuck about this anti-Chinese history and the continued resurgences of Sinophobia by your governments and the people who support them, its literally fucking incomparable. why is it that when it comes to every other race, yall can conceive of and find it normal that there’s infighting, subgroup differentiations, clan wars, tribe wars, histories of conquest, imperialism and colonisation, slavery, government disputes, civilian revolts, brutal genocides between peoples even prior to Eurocolonisation.

but when it comes to Asians, all nuance flies out the window and suddenly its “surprising that Asians’ biggest opps are other Asians” and non-Asian social media creators have this weird social media fascination with how Asians have our own disputes?

At most, the West gleefully buys into how Eurocolonisation has created a hierarchy of Asians (which does NOT translate to our actual material powers or even our ancestral and diasporic experiences). And they reperpetuate these further by not looking into how it differs (ie EA-diasporas have absolutely been historically and violently subjugated by SEA and SA on the basis of race, whereas the most SEA and SA can imagine of being subject to EA racism, is casual racist insipid comments. Its clear we are conceiving different realities of pain.).

It’s all so insidious to me, and its clear why the treatment differs; because you’ve always assumed Asians as a monolith and as peoples without traumas and ancestral baggage. But on top of that, the delight in it as “tea” and your favourite tv drama, is weird too, and I hate every Asian minstrel who feeds into it for attention and turns it into this superficial colourist problem when it goes far deeper than that.
