Went iceberg watching, stepped on a cool claystone and realized a love-letter to sedimentary rocks was long overdue. A continuation of geological eridian phenotypes!:) (I am not immune to behemoth Adrian propaganda. Rocky mate bad as hell, statement 😌)
Nerding out under the cut!
Adrian's phenotype design is inspired by a claystone very common in my area!
The weathering processes alter the outer portion of the stone and give it an off-white colour, while the inner core remains green-grey. The fresh green surface can be exposed by breaking the claystone apart or just chiseling a piece out (which is why Adrian's tattoos are green, it's the exposed fresh surface of their carapace:) (spy their Eridanus constellation tatoo, the star theme to their markings comes from my headcanon that Adrian is an astrophysicist hehe)
The red specks on their design are iron oxide impurities, often also visible on fresh surfaces, bleeding into them and giving them the rusty coloration. And, of course, honorary mention to quartz veins! Those often form when a crack in the rock is permeated by hot hydrothermal fluids which then deposit the quartz in a vein-like structure:)
(Some claystones I hoarded over the years v )
Rocky's carapace is inspired by a sandstone (specifically quartz arenite, which is just a mature variety of sandstone made up mostly of small quartz particles.)
Now, I gotta add some cross-bedding features to my boy: the lines visible on his shell are a common sedimentary feature that often forms in dunes and deserts - the wind carries sand particles in a particular pattern, forming these cascading lines of strata. (These can be used to look back on ancient climates and determine the predominant wind direction in the area btw!)
And finally, for the green inclusions on Rocky, those are also quartz veins, but this time, with chlorite inclusions, to give them the green tinge:)
Hope this was as interesting for you to read as it was for me to paint and write:) and if I fudged up a detail somewhere, do let me know!
The way of the househusband AU where after being found bloody by Grace and healed by him, Driver fall for the teacher and his endless funfacts. He decided to end his shaddy activities and stayed with him as his househusband
Ryland Grace x Tom Ryder is such a funny ship, what is wrong with this fandom
Anyways, imagine Grace and Ryder used to date while Grace was still in grad school.
Their first interaction is Ryder mistaking him for Colt and treating him like shit while also going 'btw how did u change out of ur costume so fast??' But not actually giving Grace the time to answer and explain that he is not Colt
He, very soon after, runs into the real Colt who explains that he brought his twin on set today and suddenly things make a lot more sense
I lovingly call academia Grace 'crashout Grace', so at this point in time, he's REALLY not into Ryder's bullshit, and eventually has a whole argument with him in front of EVERYBODY. Colt (begrudgingly) pulls Grace aside before an actual fight breaks out, and Ryder tells everyone to keep it moving and gets pissy when someone calls attention to the confrontation.
Little do they know, he has never been more turned on IN HIS LIFE
So now Ryder's actively pursuing Grace bc 1. He needs dat and 2. It pisses Colt off to no end
Eventually, Grace does warm up to Ryder, but he's so blatantly not attracted to him for like the first year of them knowing each other. Grace only starts to fall once Ryder becomes a bit more vulnerable with him. He's still a dick, don't get me wrong, but he reveals more about himself to Grace than he probably has to anyone, bar maybe Gail
They date for about a year before Ryder royally fucks it up somehow and Grace breaks up with him
‘Y'know I really thought there was something different about you, something no one else could see. I was so wrong'
Ryder never really gets over Grace, but he'll tell you that he did
Anyways, fast forward a few years and Grace is back on set again cause they're filming closer to him. This is the point in time where he's been kicked out of academia and became a middle school teacher instead.
He runs into Ryder and they have their first conversation in years and it is soooo awkward, especially cause Ryder's pretending to not gaf while very much gaffing. It goes about as well as it can until a super buff dude with long hair and one arm wraps said arm around Grace's waist. Ryder obviously asks 'who tf is this??' And when Grace is like 'oh! Um, this is Simon! My uh- my boyfriend-' Ryder turns on his heel and leaves SEETHING.
He wants to crashout so bad but he waits until he gets to his trailer or hotel room or whatever to do so. He then cries about it to Gail over the phone
I’ve seen people do au’s of Bloody Mary where Grace’s twin brother is Colt Seavers from the fall guy which I honestly love but I haven’t seen anyone do what I consider to be the funniest option available which is make Ryland Grace an escaped Ken from Barbieland.
Think about it throughout PHM Ryland never talks about having a family he mentions having a girlfriend once in the book all we really know about her is that they moved in together briefly and that she had a lot of stuff.
Let’s say after Ken and Barbie break up. Ken decides to go out on his own and stumbles upon the real world. There he learns about science and becomes completely invested in that pathway. He either eventually figures out how to become a human or he stays a doll which could explain why he was the only one to survive his hyper sleep (and so he can live with rocky longer)
It could explain why he so heavily believes in non water based life so much because he WAS a non water based life form. Water doesn’t exist in Barbieland it’s all plastic.
Furthermore this could explain why he decided to become a teacher being a doll previously it’s only reasonable to assume he’d enjoy kid’s presence the same way Barbie does.
He also loves the beach and we all know that Ken’s previous job was beach
In the Barbie movie the CEO of Mattel states “we’re not worried about Ken…. Ever.” Meaning that it’s likely they wouldn’t care at all if a Ken left Barbieland and perused an education became a scientist and eventually a school teacher.
All this to say imagine Simon and Grace getting into some kind of fight where Simon is like
“You have no idea what it’s like to live your life forced to be a cog in the system. Knowing that what you want doesn’t matter, nobody caring about who you are not even your name matters”etc. etc.
and the entire time Grace is having PTSD flashbacks of this:
And then responds with:
“You wouldn’t last an hour in the place I grew up”
rocky can and does just sit on the bed next to grace too. however this has received complaints such as 'Rocky stop moving around, I'm trying to sleep.'
Saw some stuff with bloodymary on who fell first/hardest and who actually confessed first, so I'm putting in my two cents. Simon fell first, he was half dead and Grace cared for him like no one had ever before. It was love at first sight, every bandage changed and every nightmare he was comforted from only made him fall deeper. Grace fell hard, a week or so after meeting Simon. It was like that one Gravity Falls scene, where Dipper says that it's not like he lies awake at night thinking about Wendy, and the next shot is him lying awake thinking about her and he just goes "uh oh."
As for who confessed, they were both way too shy to say anything. Grace was terrified of making things weird between them. Simon was too, and on top of that he was dealing with a lot of internalised homophobia from his cult background. They just kind of gazed longingly at each other and felt ashamed for how much they enjoyed the intimacy of their situation. Technically, it was Rocky who confessed. He had a basic understanding of human courtship and mating from his talks with Grace about culture and biology, and he was pretty sure that was what he was seeing. Their hearts were beating faster, they were acting stupid, it had all the hallmarks of human mating rituals.
So, he goes up to them and asks how to best respect and support the mating rituals of his new crew.
"You need be alone for mating, question? Can go back to Blip-A while you two have fun."
The humans just fucking stared at him. He was right of course.
Currently thinking about the linguistic details of the translation system in PHM. The two speak a sort of pidgin, which I've decided to call Tau-Ceti Pidgin. The cool thing about this is that it has two distinct versions, with completely separate phonology. I'm trying to see what I can infer about standard Eridian based on how Tau-Ceti Pidgin English differs from Standard American English. It's kind of hard to tell anything because there are only two speakers. I'm just gonna put all my observations in a list now
Repetition to indicate emphasis could be a semantic feature of Eridian, or could be a result of a limited shared vocabulary. Ex: "Amaze amaze amaze!"
Rocky refers to himself by name in the first person, and come to think of it, doesn't use many pronouns at all. I can't think of him saying "I," but does use "me" and "my" such as in "fist my bump" and "fist me." (It was in the book istg) It could be that in his language, one refers to themself by name in the nominative case, but with a pronoun in the accusative.
The pidgin doesn't use articles (ex: "Life is reason" as opposed to "life is the reason,"). That could be for simplicity in communicating, or it could just be Eridian syntax. Russian does something similar.
It's cool that Eridian has a semantic/morphological marker for a question, instead of a pragmatic one like most human language. They seem to use the same structure for a yes/no question as with a statement because of this word to indicate questions.
The no articles thing could be supported by Rocky's assumption that "fist bump" is to "fist" a "bump," as opposed to being an action in and of itself.
The 'hyperspecific situations' polls are really once again highlighting that native English speakers tend to forget that 'foreign' doesn't mean 'non-English' or 'non-American'
"Did you watch a foreign language movie in the past three days?" Yeah I watched the foreign movie "The Martian" with foreign actor Matt Damon
