I've had Shangguan Qian on my mind this evening, and I've contemplated what it is about her that made her so unforgettable to me.

Canon leaves a lot of her true thoughts a mystery, so understandably many different interpretations about her exists. But how I saw her as—how I interpreted her actions, and through her actions her feelings and thoughts—it was all very refreshing. A historical fantasy romance drama woman who can choose to have sex with her potential love interest, and then move on without having fallen irrevocably in love. A character who doesn't sideline her own goals in the end for the main men to reach theirs. A character who chooses freedom and independence over a marriage. A character who doesn't get "fixed" in the end by a relationship and a traditional family. A villainess who gets a happy ending.

But also, there's two things a character can be that I have a special weakness for: living weapons who are femme fatales/hommes fatals. And she fits the criteria.

Pursuit of Jade is actually really good at making you understand that for a normal person (reading not a noble) getting entangled in matter of states and standing up for themselves is a real threat for their safety and the safety of the people around them. Changyu’s village and the town next to it were attacked and their people massacred because Changyu ‘dared’ to counter the plan of one guy and caught his eyes while he noticed she had a connection to the Marquis of Wu’an (something she doesn’t even know!!!!). And it is also good at reminding you that normal civilians that are collateral damages in the nobles plans/quarrels are people with hopes and dreams who did not ask for this!!!!

this is like basic foundational misogyny 101 but the fact that it's almost unconsciously ingrained to consider trousers a more "practical" alternative to skirts across the majority of human cultures does make me feel a little kicked in the head. this isn't even anything against pants, or denying that sometimes they are the best suited garment for purpose, it's just that skirts are nearly always unfairly compared as the a frivolous option, even though they're functionally not dissimilar at all. they're comfortable, capable of being tailored to suit a variety of purposes both aesthetic and functional, and simply what some people prefer. and yet, because they're so strongly tied to women and femininity, they're derided. a long skirt is an impediment; shortening a skirt is a sexual act. throughout history humans of all demographics have worn skirts and skirt-like clothing for a variety of purposes, but to wear a skirt in our enlightened modern age is a heavily gendered and politically loaded notion. and we just tolerate living like this. fucking unreal.
