Playing with colour
An incomplete panel from our comic book, Podi. @artofsuri wants you to know I have taken a terrible photograph of her work and the colour will be better in the printed book and that I'm a bad person for posting this.
How To Feed An Artist
Homemade vegetable tempura and deep fried crickets in soya sauce. @artofsuri won't make art for anything less and she's very scary so we cook and we cook...
Elements won an Ignatz!
Elements: Fire, edited by @neekaneeks won the Ignatz Award for Outstanding Anthology! @artofsuri and I have a comic in it called Metta Helmet. Taneka was a wise and understanding editor and it’s a hell of a thrill to have been a part of this. Big hugs to our fellow contributors.
The Editor-in-Chief of @comicsbeat has a thorough rundown here:

Two-thirds of the Podi team were involved in this. Navin, the other third, was too busy being a good father to his wonderful newborn daughter. Clearly Navin’s priorities are wrong.
Pencils are inks
@artofsuri is refining her process and this is what the new pencils look like. We’re quickly learning that when you work on something for years, as you improve in your craft, you sometimes have to go back and revisit the old work, rearrange the furniture or, you know, tear down the building and start again...
We may have to shift publication date, but we’re hoping it’ll be worth the wait. The pages are coming along nicely. More updates, soon : )
Isuri’s on a Top Ten list (again)
What a nice write-up from these folk:

Nickelodeon editor, Joan Hilty said nice things about Podi, today @lankacomiccon
The cover of a book is always a strange beast. It must play nicely with the story in the book and it must also play nicely with the marketing department's wants. The three of us have been chatting, on and off, about the cover for Podi for about five years. Above is a small selection from this year by @artofsuri
And that’s how our comic, Podi, began. From that first email to the final, published book, it’ll have take nigh on a decade. We didn’t work on it everyday for those years but sometimes it sure feels like it, by golly.
That’s also what they really mean when the book jacket screams things like, “TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING!”
Fingers crossed, Podi will be in shops and on Amazon in early 2019. The frequency of posts on this blog would have you believe otherwise but we’re working hard - promise.
@artofsuri thinking about final colours for Podi. I think I stared at this thing last night during our entire weekly chat and didn’t hear a single damn thing that was said. Filthy co-writer and I are so lucky to be working with her.
Woah. Very kind words by @crosberg for @TheAVClub about the @heyelements anthology: http://bit.ly/2s2BmCd
Our first published comic in this anthology! Much love to @elementsanthology for having us aboard : )
Drawing deep from a well of rich art and heritage, the contemporary visual art coming out of Sri Lanka glows with a palette of hues that are subtle, warm blends
Famous in India! Thanks, @HomegrownIn
@artofsuri killing it on the thumbnails. We're nearly halfway through thumbnailing and if things go well, we can move to pencilling in late March.
On a panel at Lanka Comiccon today with @artofsuri and Navin:
Panel: The Making of Podi, Day 1
Saturday, August 20, 2016
2:00pm 3:00pm
Podi is a local comic, getting published by Oni Press. Come here the creators talk about Podi, and how they managed to get seected by Oni.
Panelist: Deshan Tennekoon, Isuri Dayaratne, and Navin Ratnayake.
On the Middle Floor in the EAP Theater.
Come say Hi if you’re in the area.
More info here: http://www.lankacomiccon.lk/
@artofsuri is thumbnailing all 120-pages of Podi again since it works better as a 9-panel grid and she enjoys nurturing her carpal tunnel syndrome. This week we're working on some bouncy, jumpy, shouty bits.
This is how you make an artist cry; malicious annotating of their carefully considered thumbnails. Working on Podi last night with @artofsuri and Navin, we found a fun way to make a whole species of verbal gags work visually. It added an unexpected layer of comedy to the book. Feels good to have a night like that - inspiring each other, brains fizzing, making stuff.
