hiking? to get places? can’t relate
I hate hiking with people who want to reach destinations or travel a certain distance. I LOVE hiking with people who don’t mind stopping every thirty feet to look inside rotting logs or photograph spiders or identify salamanders. people who hike for exercise confuse and terrify me.
OH MY GOD YOU UNDERSTAND.
I joined an outdoors club in college and it fucking sucked because all anyone wanted to do was get to the top of the mountain as quickly as possible and only stopped to drink water and eat trail mix. It was awful.
Ideal hiking companions: botanists, entomologists, mycologists, people with asthma, children with ADHD, easily distractible dogs, people with great butts who walk slightly faster than I do

Thought this was going to be horror short fiction, but no, it’s just rural.
19th century books will kill off a main character in one sentence and then spend 3 pages describing a street
there is no unskilled labor. it’s team work. it’s being surroundings-aware. it’s working with fire and hot surfaces and sharp surfaces and knifes safely. it’s being trusted with making a meal, with accounting for the cash, for the cleanliness of the space, and the safety of the customers. it’s lifting and bending and storing correctly, using judiciously, and making the replacement order accurately. it’s great training if it’s recognized as that and paid as that- paid well enough that the employee can eat, get to and from work safely, live safely, and save a little toward their next step.
