india is not a democracy anymore.
everyone needs to hear about the situation in india right now. the youth of this nation are going through hell and back to protect the foundations that our country was built on in the first place, while the adults who are supposed to actually be in charge try to silence our voices.
NEET, which is an exam taken by millions of students per year and is the ONLY gateway for medical admissions across the country, had its papers leaked. so many took their lives because this exam meant everything for their future. and NTA, the agency who conducts this exam, was not held accountable.
there was national backlash. cockroach janta party (initially a satirical political party formed by abhijeet dipke in retaliation to the remarks of the chief justice of india calling the youth "cockroaches" and "parasites of society") started protests at jantar mantar, demanding the resignation of the union education minister, dharmendra pradhan. the movement also asked for ten million inr (~100,000 usd) in compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and wanted NTA be held accountable.
sonam wangchuk, a climate activist and education reformer, also went on a hunger strike at jantar mantar to protest against this corruption in india's higher education system. his fast began on june 28, demanding the resignation of the union education minister. his fast lasted for 20 days until delhi police FORCIBLY removed him and admitted him to safdarjung hospital on july 18.
because of this, cockroach janta party announced "chalo sansad," a march to the parliament beginning on june 20th, 9:00 am ist. but the police seems to be responding with water cannons, mobile jammers, and baton charge. all of this, because of a peaceful protest led by people no older than 30.
and yet there has been absolutely no indian media coverage about a movement that spans the entirety of this nation. so, please, if you see this, keep talking about us. we will not let those old bastards stoop any lower than they've already had. we will not let them ruin our country any further. we will not be silenced
Please look it up. Students have been beaten bloody. They’re using electrified batons. They’re using batons with nails hammered in. They’re dragging people off and locking them up for no reason. People are being beaten, assaulted, and even molested by the police.
The government is doing everything it can except for actually having an honest dialogue with the protestors.
It’s important to note that despite all the police brutality, despite how the government has had extra forces airlifted to Delhi to help quash the protest, this has deterred no one.
Not only is the protest in Delhi going strong, the government closed down every metro station in Central Delhi in an effort to stop them and it still hasn’t.
There’s protests in most major cities in India in solidarity. Palakkad, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi, and probably more besides. There has been a protest in the UK as well in solidarity.
People who aren’t at the protest are donating so much food that the organisers have had to ask them to stop doing so because there’s more than enough. In lieu of that people are donating money for medicine, lawyers, cleanup, and umbrellas.
Most crucially, hopes aren’t broken. Spirits aren’t broken. People with bruises and broken bones are still showing up. People are showing up cosplaying as freedom fighters and super heroes and a dinosaur. People are doxxing goons who show up trying to incite violence. People are making reels. People in Mumbai literally opened a moving police detainment van to allow arrested students to escape.
*all links lead to Instagram posts or reels showing the same. Almost every major Indian news network has been bought and either ignores the protests or depicts them unfairly. All honest news comes from people on the ground and smaller independent news outlets.
I feel like every year the girl names get more boyish like what do you mean you are a teenage girl named Ian??
And this leads to an escalation on the boy name front where like, once upon a time shit like Hunter was something parents in the Bush era made up to reassure ppl there was no fag shit going on with their kids and now the most famous trans woman in country is named Hunter so p soon we are gonna need to call the boys shit like Blade and Laser
I'm gonna be teaching in 2030 and all the girls are going to be named Arnold and Connor and all the boys are gonna be named Gun
sorry but gun is already a girl’s name
Polycules should be able to trade people like sports teams do
Listen -- you're a good defender and your pussy is fantastic, but that's not what our team needs right now. We're trading you to Greater Boston in exchange for someone who has a car.
TIL anyone who's going to overwinter in Antarctica has to have had their appendix out. Because removing an appendix that's not causing any trouble just as a precaution is way better than having one that's about to burst when you're on the ass-end of the planet with no way to be rushed to a hospital if shit gets real.
No, by the way, we absolutely did not think of this ahead of time. A dude named Leonid Rogozov got appendicitis in Antarctica. Fortunately, the expedition's doctor diagnosed him quickly and knew how to remove an appendix. Unfortunately, our man Leo was the expedition's doctor.
What did he do? Well, he set up a mirror, gave his belly a shot of novocaine, presumably told a colleague, "hold my vodka," and he removed his own fucking appendix. He survived.
this picture has such "i lived bitch" energy
yknow what im just leaving this whole tag thread out here
I'm just playing with this idea but
What if Shane gets outed super early in his career. Like rookie season or second season. Maybe he misses some important event because he's with Ilya and oversleeps and when he's confronted it all comes out. Something like that. Importantly, Ilya isn't outed but he's involved enough that he is or could feel at least a little bit responsible.
So Shane is outed and forced off his team and out of hockey in general. He's young and stupid and angry with himself and with Ilya so he ends things with Ilya completely. He's kinda mean about it, does it over the phone and furious.
Shane tries to move on with his life. He gets a normal job, meets normal people, dates normal men. But it's always weird and uncomfortable. If Shane washed out of hockey for any of the normal reasons almost no one would remember years later but people remember the first out gay hockey player and what happened after he was outed. I don't really have a strong idea of what Shane does for this period. Maybe he does real estate full time. Maybe he becomes a personal trainer. Maybe the flips houses. What matters is that after enough time, this feels like his real life, and hockey feels like something he thought he was gonna do as a kid.
He would say he doesn't think about Ilya anymore, because why would he think about the guy he exchanged blowjobs with one time at 18, but of course he thinks about Ilya. He doesn't watch hockey, but it's in the air enough that he sees Ilya on TV. And even if he didn't he googles Ilya sometimes at night and binge watches all his interviews and clips since the last time he googled him. Shane tried really hard to hate Ilya after everything and he got pretty close for a few years. He would imagine going back to when he was outed and dragging Ilya with him, or his secret comfort, the fantasy of Ilya coming out in solidarity, the two of them together against the world, in love.
How does this play out? When do they see each other again? Maybe Shane makes a public statement on the ten year anniversary of his outing that triggers Ilya to reach out. Maybe he writes his memoirs. Maybe he wins some award and Ilya is at the ceremony for whatever reason.
I like the idea though that an out gay kid is drafted into the mlh and suddenly Shane is relevant again in a way he hasn't been for years. Maybe he's drafted very high by Boston, where Ilya is still captain.
(Ilya has of course spent the last decade constructing a mental party palace out of his guilt and denial and regrets and hedonism and forgetting and remembering. He thinks about Shane every day. He never thinks about Shane. Was Shane even real or just some strange dream he had? He only thinks about Shane when he's jerking off. He only thinks about Shane when he fucks something else up.
And now he has this kid he's responsible for. He's nothing like Shane. He's swedish or something and so blond he doesn't have eyebrows and he's a strange combination of so straightforward he's almost rude and incredibly cocky. Ilya likes him and Ilya can't stand to be around him. And then they're comparing him to Shane and all these articles are coming out about how hockey failed Shane Hollander and all Ilya can see is that Ilya failed shane Hollander. So he's way too supportive of his new rookie. Borderline inappropriately friendly. It's okay because it's hockey, but Ilya does invite the rookie to all the team veterans get togethers and gives him a really intense whispered pep talk about how Ilya will murder anyone who gives him trouble. Opponent teammate staff person on the street it doesn't matter just let him know who.
It builds up in Ilya and he feels like he's going crazy and at the year end party he ends up drunkenly telling the rookie everything that happened with Shane. The rookie is drunk too and doesn't really speak enough English for this conversation but he gets the main idea. Enough to realize that his captain is coming out to him and has some kind of fucked up lost love situation going on. He flags down Marly for back up but by this point Ilya is incoherent.)
Shane ends up agreeing to one single interview with a gay culture and current events news source. It's the first time he's ever spoken publicly about what happened and his first interview since he was a professional hockey player. He spends a lot of time thinking about what he wants to say, but eventually he thinks, fuck it all, and gives a really biting breakdown of homophobia in hockey and pro sports. He names names. He comes with citations for specific things that were said about him. He comes with his bitchiest face on like armor, but the interviewer is a middle aged gay man with blue sparkly nail polish and Shane has grown up and learned to trust this type of gay to have his back and at the end the guy asks if he can hug him and Shane surprises himself with how much he wants that and how much better he feels after.
The guy asked if Shane knew any other professional athletes who were closeted and Shane took a single shaky breath before answering, just one, and he's still in it. The interview is on video and that question and answer goes viral because of how Shane looks. He cuts his eyes to the side, shuts them, inhales, and flutters his eyes open. Just one. Everyone is asking who was Shane's just one until Shane has to make a statement that people shouldn't take his interview about how awful it was to be outed as a pro hockey player as an invitation to out another pro hockey player.
The only person who has all the info to put it all together, is the gay rookie, who watches Shane's interview over the summer break and spends the rest of the summer making his boyfriend listen to him rant about what he's supposed to do about his gay captain in love with Shane Hollander. And then Shane DMs him something earnest on Twitter like, hey I know it can be a lot, let me know if you ever need to talk. And the poor rookie is slamming his phone face down on the table and thinking about asking to be traded to somewhere less gay actually.
whats a stereotype for your country that you absolutely do. mine is that i unironically go "eh" and apologize a lot and i often drink maple syrup straight
The grip that Burger & Big Drink has on the American People cannot be overstated
americans after eating 2 pounds of pasta and getting sick: uh oh im about to enter a serious food coma lol
americans after eating 2 pounds of ginger beef and fried rice and getting sick: the devious CCP has agents everywhere
my futile wish is for people to understand that "sex scenes in movies/TV don't have to serve the plot and can genuinely just be for pleasure" and "sex-repulsed people are allowed to complain about how rare it is for media made for adults like them to be something they can enjoy completely" are both true statements. unfortunately society hates both sex and people who don't like sex, so everyone gets far too defensive about any sex or lack thereof in fiction to actually have this conversation
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.
What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂
I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bush’s war on Iraq, so I think that.
I don't know about a news story, but my first "political" memory was something about the torture memos
filthy, filthy read
OPs addition in the notes that I wanted to add because the posts' comments are-
my most toxic trait is i fucking love work gossip. i play neutral not to be the bigger person or take the high road but to hear slander and hearsay from every side. two coworkers complained about each other to me in the same afternoon and i nearly blacked out from the rush
