I cannot recommend bringing your heritage and culture into how you view media enough.
It is important to consider the culture of the person who created the piece, absolutely; but the different perspectives offered by the viewers is fascinating in and of itself and does not always detract from the message.
As an example, when I was younger, I watched Schindler's List. This movie is famously shot in black and white except for one section, concerning a little girl in a red coat. The camera follows her until her eventual death.
I am Turtle Island Indigenous and I was always taught that the only color spirits could see was red, because it is the color of life and blood.
So the second the girl in the red jacket came on screen, something inside me chilled with fear.
The only color in the movie was that red. At some point, I, the viewer, had died.
I remember sobbing at the sight of the burning human piles that were shown, convinced I was buried in there somewhere. The reason I had only seen red on the girl was that my death was recent. I was the ash in the air mistaken for snow. I had died before her and had followed her, helplessly, until she followed me.
The message I got for that was maybe not what the creator had intended: that there was no "being clever enough" or "good enough" or "kind enough" that would shield or protect you from such a massive tidal wave of evil.
You are not exempt from tragedy, that red jacket whispered. You are not special.
When I told some of my white friends about my experience with viewing Schindler's List, some were shocked and the rest just out-and-out mocked me for my "media illiteracy".
"it was just a filming trick to make you feel something," I remember one saying, which terrified me. How had he not felt anything even before she showed up?
However, when I repeated my viewing to a college class, they were fascinated. The implications of what I had seen and felt made the film all the more terrifying and solemn. It encouraged a lot of people to try to ask themselves what media meant from a cultural perspective, where they hadn't done that before.

This is relevant to art also because it is becoming increasingly difficult to find reference images online during simple searches.
we simply are not making it out of this one alive fellow pervs
I. What?
“you are watching someone be vulnerable and intimate without their immediate knowledge”
um. wut. no. u are watching actors. who were filmed WITH THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND CONSENT. like. they very much do know they are doing a movie scene. on camera. for a film. that will be watched. huh????
I see that we are still dealing with gen z treating works of fiction as documentaries
fucking disgusting that nobody cares about actual children
when i was a kid, for a very long time, my thoughts were focused on suicide. when, where, how. came close to acting on those thoughts many times. punching myself was my version self-harm, no cuts, only hideable bruises, i didn't realize it at the time, i just knew it took my mind off of things, that pain.
but why? because no adult in my life saw children as people. i was thing, dragged along to show off how good my parents were. anything different needed to be hid. i was forced to attend school where i was bullied, othered, talked down to, harassed, or ignored otherwise. i had no choices, no way of standing up for myself, because it punished if i did. and i was punished over and over again.
i was hit, i was verbally abused for two decades by my immediate and extended family, and i was sexually abused by my older brother before i was allowed to understand what was happening.
children desperately need rights. they need the power to say no and have that be backed up by a system that will support them. i didnt want to kill myself, i wanted to escape my family and there was no other option available to me. i isolated myself for years because of the abuse i faced and many more never made it past their suicide attempts.
children need rights so that the rampant and plain-as-day abuse they face can have a chance of being stopped. when children have somewhere they can go, away from their families and abusers where they have a guaranteed bed to rest in, when children have the knowledge they need to identify when they're being abused, when children arent forced into labor by parents, guardians, or companies, when children arent forced to say yes to adults, when children have the freedom to express themselves, when children have the freedom to choose who they are and transition,
WHEN CHILDREN CAN SAY "NO"
is when i can finally be truly happy
Actually this is getting its own post. I want to talk about enemy abstraction in video games. You know, the thing where instead of being a person with a name who lives like anyone else, a bandit is a guy named Bandit who stands around 24/7 in a forest clearing or some shit.
Abstraction of all kinds is very common in media, but especially in video games. I'm not anti-abstraction per se - it's necessary! Every element you choose to expound on or contextualize represents an enormous amount of extra work (especially in an interactive medium) and extra prominence in the text. Take modelling environments, like someone's house. Look at your own home in real life for a sec. There are probably hundreds of distinct objects that all have unique elements to them. Your fridge magnets are a pack your aunt got you for christmas one year. A book is dog-eared at a specific page because you started to read two years ago, didn't have a bookmark, and forgot about it when you put it back on the shelf. Your desk chair wobbles because every piece of shit chair you've ever owned has eventually started to wobble.
If you were going to model a home like this in a video game, including any of those elements is hours of extra work (oh yeah lemme just spend a whole workday making individual fridge magnets in blender) but it also creates emphasis. If a player sees the dog-eared page on the bookshelf, are they going to think it's a clue to a mystery or something? So you plonk down a bed, a nondescript bookshelf, a desk, and you call it a day. And someone playing the game glosses over this location without assigning it outsized importance because it is very obviously gesturing at a space, invoking the idea of it.
Enemies work the same way, of course. The guy named Bandit is gesturing at the idea of conflict. You're not supposed to question the interiority of Bandit any more than you're supposed to read the individual books on a JRPG bookshelf. And, hell, the more zoomed-out and large scale you get, the more this is just unavoidable. You sure as hell aren't going to get super granular about every spearman's home life in a Total War game, and it would be futile to try.
All of that said, what you choose to elaborate on and what gets left abstract is revealing. It tells us what your priorities are, the things you felt were most important to your text. (This in turn can tell us how well you understand your text.) Every enemy you choose to abstract represents a decision - active or otherwise - to avoid contextualizing.
In this context, I find the enemy design something like Skyrim (and much of TES in general, with a few exceptions) to be incredibly disappointing. Clearly, specificity of place and individualization is part of the core appeal. So much hay gets made about how every NPC has a schedule. Bethesda had dozens of people working on modelling thousands of bits of junk and populating people's homes with them. You've got a plot that is, on the surface, about politics and divided loyalties and distinct factions coming into conflict with each other. You've got a map filled to the brim with distinct locations, just begging to be woven into a web of relationships and motivations. And you populate 90% of those locations with 200 guys named Bandit or Draugr or Falmer who each have two lines of dialogue or two distinct grunts and say "yeah, fuck it, ship it."
Sucks!!!!
it's always "you gnawed off your own leg to escape like an animal caught in a trap" and never "why didn't anyone try to help you out of the trap" or "why weren't you provided with any other resources to escape the trap with except for your own teeth"
So I saw on tiktok that Palestinian journalist, Bisan Owda, has called for a boycott of Spider-Man: Brand New Day because its producer, Avi Arad, has publicly supported the genocide of the Palestinian people and has defended Netanyahu
I’m also seeing that there are posts about it on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, but I’m not seeing any posts about it on Tumblr? Am I not looking up the right keywords in the search bar or are we all out of the loop?
(I can’t find the original post from Owda because I have the worst time navigating Instagram, but this link is from The Jamia Times on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/DblMMDKTyub/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== )
[Image ID: Picture of a quote from Bisan Owda that reads: “Waiting for Zendaya and Tom Holland to say something about this maybe? We cannot separate art from accountability. Every ticket sold supports a production led by a producer who has publicly defended Israel’s war on Gaza. Boycott is one of the few peaceful tools we have to demand justice.” /End ID]

So--when I was in my mid-twenties and the Disaster Ex tried to make me kill myself, the local mental hospital didn't have any beds open in the usual ward for attempted suicides.
What they did have was a single spare bed in the small, comfortable, quiet, wildly expensive facility for girls with eating disorders.
They asked each of the young women currently living there if it was acceptable that I might occupy a bed in one of the rooms for a while, just the long weekend while I was waiting for a doctor's evaluation. I hadn't been violent, I had gone with the cops without putting up any fight at all, and I was still and I was small and all those things were sufficient for me to be deemed safe. So up they sent me, to somewhere high in Western Psych, above the smells and sounds of the denser-packed wards, above where the care workers were harried and frustrated, to a gentle space with seven or eight young women in it.
I was five foot three, and I weighed about 115 pounds. I was underweight for my frame, as a fair amount of that weight was martial arts muscle; I would probably have been ten pounds heavier if I were healthy, with the amount of activity I got.
I was at least two inches shorter than pretty much every other young woman there, six or seven inches shorter than one of them, and I had at least thirty pounds on several of them. The tallest was not allowed to walk, she had to sit in a wheelchair and be pushed around, because her condition was so advanced that the motion would undo what good her hard work had done.
And over the course of the four or five days I was there, multiple of them came up to me alone to quietly tell me that I had the *perfect* body, and they wished they could be as skinny as I was. That I needed to live, because I was beautiful, and if they were as beautiful as I was, they wouldn't need to be here.
Their eyes were on me all the time, in the hours that I wasn't sleeping. I spent a lot of time sleeping, and we took our meals separately (I not needing to be monitored while I ate, and not having my food weighed), but we spent a fair amount of time sitting around in the little shared living room space, talking about movies and magazines and books we'd loved, talking about our families. I didn't talk about my family; they didn't pry.
They were all so fucking nice.
And I could have broken any one of them over my narrow knee. They each thought they were bigger than I was.
Their brains lied to them, every time they looked at a mirror. Every time they looked down at their own thighs. What they saw was not what I could see. They had bright, beautiful eyes in dark hollows, and I could count their vertebrae, could see their ribs winging when they breathed, could see the motion of every tendon on the backs of their hands.
They weren't celebrities. They weren't being paid to have particular bodies, nor were they deep in the toxic sea of having strangers take photos of them to sell to gossip rags if they stepped out of doors in old jeans. They had families and loved ones who were doing everything that they could to protect them, to uplift them and help them be healthy. They were just everyday people--a nurse, a couple of students, a couple of recent college grads, a young woman who had decided it was time to really get help because she wanted to be a mother--and still they'd been so injured by the neverending fucking deluge of body-image bullshit that they were dying of it.
That was in 2009. Things are worse now. I think about them still. I hope that they're all right.
And in case some people aren't aware: anorexia is deadly. There is a point at which your body looses the ability to digest food and you are no longer capable of improving.
please god we are all so fucking tired

As a European, I knew Americans have been asking for walkable cities but i had no idea it was literally this hostile
WHERE DO YOU WALK YOUR DOGS!?!
lol yeah
Its to the point where most Americans can’t conceive of a walkable community because everywhere is like this and several generations have now grown up in a world like this. There’s hardly anyone that can conceive of a world that isn’t like this. Most people either cave in and get a car or end up isolated. I live in a city that’s mostly walkable by North American standards and I still end up walking in the dirt on the edge of a stroad a lot of the time.
And don't forget, we can't get decent public transportation either.
