I feel like this is the reason everyone thinks history is boring when you are growing up.  We teach you dates and sequences of event within a narrow location of the world.  If you are lucky, your teacher instructions you in a little culture and political intrigue.  (I loved learning about the politics leading up to and after WWI and WWII.  It gave the list of dates meaning.)  However, unless you have a magical brain that can line up the dates correctly in your mind, you don’t realize what concurrent world events occur.  You miss out on learning what worldly historical figures are contemporaries.  We could be teaching the geopolitical ramifications of the destruction of the Byzantine Empire by the Ottoman Empire.  Instead every kid in the US know that “in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”  History isn’t boring. We just teach it like it is.  We will just end the rant here before I get carried away.
