the thing being there were three Elder Faeries and two of them (Berry and Flower) broke out of the collective identity because they allowed themselves to have their own personalities and gained their own names while this one (whom the other two refer to as Leaf) stayed behind
he was also supposed to be a blank slate whose duty is to take care of the other Faeries and this became the blueprint for the first Silver Knights, but he's been alive for so long that he eventually developed uniqueness
which implies that other Silver Knights who live long enough might also attain a new personhood (Silverbell) or recover their original self (Mercurial Knight)
since the power of the Guardian can be transferred, it was supposed to come along with the title of Elder Faerie, but this never happened because people stopped using the Leaf distinction (since he's the only Elder Faerie remaining) and it eventually became what people thought was his name

Blue Sapphire ran away from their kingdom a very long time ago and Elder Faerie keeps finding him every couple hundred years and asks (tries to force) him to return
he'd try to do the same to Sugarfly, but Blue Sapphire somehow made Elder Faerie believe she's dead so he'd leave her alone

White Lily's character development already happened but was mostly unmentioned tbh. The fic is mostly in Shadow Milk's POV and he's already made his judgement of her, which would be very difficult to change considering that he always thinks he's right.
White Lily has actually been getting more and more quiet and withdrawn in the past few chapters. She gets angry less easily and is mostly just staring a lot more, basically turning back to her observant and analytical self.
Shadow Milk only notices this subconsciously, just deeming her not that fun to talk to recently, because he believes he knows what she's really like (the angry woman he got to know initially) and this is just some kinda phase.
She's also been scheming in the background with all the letters she's sending and receiving... Those may have influenced her into calming down some
But basically, White Lily went from sad and nonchalant pre-fic to angry and grieving in the beginning to still sad and kinda angry but gotta put that aside coz there's some shit she gotta do rn
A Shadow Milk PTSD moment is arriving very soon and it does involve White Lily and Custard III but they're not really gonna be in a dangerous situation for it. He's gonna have a full-blown panic attack and think there's danger but it's all just in his head...
The whole overcoming part comes much later but then it's gonna involve someone else other than those two hehe

i haven't found time to play the newest chapters but I've seen so much spoilers that i kinda know the gist of it (which also means this whole post might be Wrong™ coz i havent really seen things for myself)

so many people seem to forget that the soul jams aren't people
they're sentient magical objects (that can sometimes manifest in cookie-like form), ofc they don't really give a fuck about their wielders beyond their ability to fulfill their duty
like, if cheering them on/showing some semblance of "care"/agreeing with the "i am you and you are me" idea is what will help, they will do that
they aren't capable of having emotions and they don't have empathy/sympathy/compassion, everything they do is for the sake of what they were made for
let's think about it this way
the analogy me and my friend came up with is that the soul jams are like AI (or at least how it usually is in fiction) and the Witches are the programmers
the AI was tasked to do this certain job and without the programmer to correct its path, it will just keep going as it was initially directed
it thinks and decides on cold hard facts, no feelings or conscience, only the accomplishment of the goal that was set for them
the AI also doesn't really need explicit step-by-step instructions from the programmer at this point, becoming perfectly capable of figuring out for itself what else needs to be done for the sake of that final goal
but again, it doesn't have emotions, so its plan of action will be more geared towards efficiency or utilitarianism and will not see anything wrong about sacrifice if that's what it takes to be one step closer to their goal
does this mean i like the way things are going?

i can find sense in certain narrative decisions but that doesn't mean i like it
im just saying that it isn't unreasonable at all and there is some logic to it which i understand and feel the need to point out the existence of
i do agree that it has been a disappointing turn of events back to back to back and there could've been more thematically better choices to be made
but in and of itself, the soul jams being cold and cruel is understandable

i've completed the first half of chapter 14!!
while i did say chapters would be longer starting from Act IV if i wanted to keep the three parts per act format, i realized that i might not be able to keep that format at all haha
Act IV might have five parts because i feel like forcing the Pilgrim Path arc to fit in three chapters with the way that i write feels impossible...
although some of the scenes feel like filler fluff and stuff, everything i publish is relevant to the story, even just a little bit (including the interludes!!)
so yeah there's a bunch of things that take up a few thousand words and dont seem to be very important but cutting them out would make the story kinda... hollow in some way
the premise of this whole fic really is just "Shadow Milk POV slice of life + Shadowlily slow burn with a loose background plot in a world changed by Pure Vanilla's death"
on top of the thesis statement of the whole AU that "this, too, is temporary; let us cherish it anyways", this whole time ive been subconsciously making some point that despite the bleakness both past and future, the present just seems to have so much life
anyways slight spoiler: it took 32.8k words but Shadow Milk and White Lily are FINALLY (mutually acknowledged) friends!!! it would probably take another 30k for them to be officially lovers lmao idk

Curious to know if there’s any actual huge big moment for Willy and Smilk. Like where they genuinely have a talk rather than them just biting at each others throats or little small things here and there. I’m curious of how these little frenemies will play out. Also curious if they actually care about each other now compared to the start???
There was supposed to be a step in this direction in Chapter 13 but it didn't flow very well with the scenes before it so I'm putting that dialogue in a different chapter. They're 100% gonna have more serious and genuine conversations for this arc (although Custard III will also be there so it's not really just between the two of them).
However, the truly big moments won't happen until at least Act V....
They do actually care about each other now compared from the start!! :D They don't really hate each other anymore, just finding the other person VERY ANNOYING to be around but also "fineeee i guess i have time do whatever, might as well hang out with you"
The development of their relationship kinda follows "Your Stupid Face" by Kayden MacKay lmao
