Kris Mayes promises to enforce Arizona's public accommodation law to protect the LGBTQ community in spite of the court's ruling in a Colorad
Colorado has a law on the books that says, in simple terms, a business open to the public canât discriminate against gay people.
The radical right-wing majority of the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling last week saying that, yes, it can.
The court took the side of a web designer in Colorado who said it was her First Amendment right to refuse to design wedding websites for same-sex couples.
Arizona has a law much like Coloradoâs.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced in no uncertain terms that her office is determined to enforce it.
The Supreme Court be damned.
Mayes calls ruling 'woefully misguided'
After the court announced its decision in the Colorado case, Mayes issued a statement that read in part, âToday, a woefully misguided majority of the United States Supreme Court has decided that businesses open to the public may, in certain circumstances, discriminate against LGBTQ+ Americans.
âWhile my office is still reviewing the decision to determine its effects, I agree with Justice Sotomayor â the idea that the Constitution gives businesses the right to discriminate is âprofoundly wrong.â â
Mayes is referring to a dissenting opinion by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who wrote in part, âToday, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class.â
Today is Independence Day.
Perhaps it is time for more attorneys general from blue states to declare their states' independence from the corrupt rulings of the right-wing extensions of the GOP and the Federalist society who sit on the Supreme Court.
Let these Supreme Court "originalists" grapple with the fact that NOWHERE in the Constitution does it give them the right to judicial review. The Court gave itself this power in Marbury v. Madison (1803).
Let them grapple with the fact that they have no power to enforce their corrupt rulings.
Perhaps it is time that we took back our country from the slow-moving GOP/ Federalist Society coup that happened when Mitch McConnell and the GOP Senate refused to consider Obama's Supreme Court candidate 8 months before a presidential election, and then turned around four years later and rammed Trump's nominee through the confirmation process only a month before a presidential election.
Maybe it's time that blue state attorneys general declared our independence from:
Corrupt religious rulings that undermine the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
Corrupt Second Amendment rulings that ignore over 200 years of precedent and the plain reading of the the text referring to the right to "bear Arms" being tied to "a well regulated Militia."
The corrupt Dobbs ruling that dismissed 50 years of precedent, and took away half the nation's right to bodily autonomy and reproductive healthcare (by indirectly imposing their own right-wing religious beliefs on our country).
The corrupt Citizens United decision that allowed for "legal political bribery," which has allowed corporations and the wealthy to "buy" politicians.
Corrupt rulings that undermined the Voting Rights Act, and allowed for "political" gerrymandering.
Two corrupt rulings that ignored precedent and undermined continuing the 50 years of higher education affirmative action progress in combatting the ongoing effects of systemic racism in our educational system.
Corrupt rulings that undermine the ability of the EPA to protect our environment and combat climate change.
Corrupt rulings that undermine the authority of government agencies to protect our health.
Let's "NOT go quietly into the night."
Let's "NOT vanish without a [political] fight."
Maybe it's time that attorney generals in blue states declared "our Independence Day!"

My favourite thing about the latest Twitter meltdown is all the artists reanimating their dead Tumblr accounts today and immediately being greeted with hundreds of notes because even a Tumblr account they literally have not posted to in 3â5 years has more active and engaged followers than the Twitter account that they've been updating daily.
*crouches to go into stealth*
the cracking of my knees alerts the guards, I am immediately killed
huge shoutout to the guy at the bar who said âi like your dress maamâ and when i was like. iâm a man but thank you! he was like âoh shit i like your dress homieâ i love you forever
