I think more popular ASMR CD's should get comic releases. Specifically high quality comic releases. Sometimes yandere comics aren't worth buying, and that's the awful truth. Awkward art styles. Bad endings. The genre is still full of "passable" content. This is the whole package. A good CD and a good comic with great art. Very worth collecting.

Our heroine is a spunky brat. A petite woman that doesn't get taken seriously at work. Everybody dotes on her, because she looks so young. She's frustrated by it. She hates it. She's a fully grown adult with a good career. She thinks her kindly coworkers are very annoying.

They tell her she shouldn't walk alone at night, because she's an obvious target for pervs.

She doesn't listen.

She argues with a weird guy that seems drunk, or even mentally ill, confidently.

She can take care of herself.

She wakes up in a degrading, frilly outfit. Her room looks like a castle fit for a princess. Her hair has been expertly done and her handcuffs are frilly lace bands.

The weirdo from before has kidnapped her.

She doesn't know him.

He's not secretly her childhood friend.

He's nuts.

She protests pretty hard. Crazy guy is rude, presumptuous, handsome....and unbothered. He seems to think he's above the law. Possibly because he's rich. Custom BDSM gear is expensive. The crystal chandeliers everywhere are a dead giveaway too.

He's not crazy and stupid.

He has a plan.

He tries to explain. She looks like his old pet. That's why he took her. He totally didn't plan ahead. Ignore the tailored outfits. He's totally not using the rabbit thing as an excuse to take her specifically. He totally didn't wait until she was alone at night. He doesn’t exactly hide it. The rabbit excuse is full of creepy layers. In his twisted head it somehow justifies his stalking and the kidnapping, and his overall ownership of her.

Her catty attitude makes him fall even further. It kind of saves her, I think. Before he wasn't interested in her real name. He was just going to give her his rabbits name. When she lashes out at him he asks for her real name, which could indicate that he started following her purely because she is his type looks wise.

She continues to resist, so he cuts up her cards. He takes her phone. He destroys her things in front of her. He doesn’t care if she's bored. He wants his new pet to wait for him. To like his company....because life is boring and theres nothing else to do.

Gags, ropes, chains, threats. Kesedo isn't gentle all the time. Rabbit is convinced that he will kill her if she doesn't cooperate.

He just wants affection though. Really bad. He tries to buy her love with sweetness just as often. His logic is very twisted, but again I like his arrogance. He behaves as if winning is natural for him, and Rabbit is just throwing a tantrum because she's hungry.

She attacks.

He likes that too.

His character design is fun as well. This is in a modern setting. His frilly sense of style actually indicates he's a fan of Lolita fashion and cute things. It's not JUST a standard prince outfit. It's a preference.

Also, this story is getting an extension, and I trust it will get better.

I have my baja blast and I am ready to write about Club Suicide. Be warned this is a loooooong post and it was written when I was sleepy.

I’ve been feeling a little sick lately worrying that people won’t want to play Club Suicide because they just hear everyone who played it originally in Japanese talking about the translation quality. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to make a post about it too and maybe pin it. I’ve been sending the Masaya snippets around to other people, be it here or Discord or Reddit (isn’t it funny how everyone rushed to play different routes?).

My goal isn’t to criticize or make anyone think playing the English translation is a bad thing, or isn’t worth it. I don’t think anyone thinks that way. We are lucky to have one in a way because playing in the original Japanese isn’t feasible for many people. I’ve been seeing many more people bringing up the game since it was released. Every single person deserves to meet the characters in their own time, in their own way, and I hope without any preconceived notions. And everyone should be welcomed into the community too!! We are all fans of the same game, at the end of the day. And every single person is just as important as everyone else in the community, whether they have been playing the game for four or five years, or for one week.

I think people are right to be disappointed and concerned over the actual quality of the English translation of the game. Crucian carps and “you said you wanna” haunt me. I know the things everyone is saying about Mitsuki, Meiyo, Shiki. I wanted to talk about Masaya. Day 1-3 dialogue spoilers below.

Here I’ll provide a few of my favorite samples of his dialogue in the English translation.

This one makes me laugh the most because Ringo herself says “What do you mean?” after Masaya’s line. Idk why but I get a kick out of it. You can just see this isn’t properly read or double-checked, because this flub is pretty noticeable.

The next ones are personal pet peeve preferences. I like Masaya’s sweetness, his ditziness. I feel like everyone can still tell that he’s a really sweet, kind person, but the way that his dialogue is handled is really funny. @retsuyachan has already talked about this stuff a bit so I won’t go on about how to write better Masaya dialogue here because she has me covered.

Instead of him searching for the right word and trailing off, or filling in the gaps with something, to be written so straightforwardly, his dialogue makes him seem super flippant. Also it’s going to take me literally forever to say “Aunt Platinum Donuts” instead of “Platinum Obasan.”

Something that I think everyone notices about Masaya’s route and what they enjoy is when Ringo talks about the vibes he gives off when he invites her back to his house. In the English translation, Ringo is more blunt about it. She straight up says she doesn’t feel like this is turning into a sexual situation and she uses several adjectives. In the original Japanese, it’s more like Ringo says that Masaya or his words don’t feel “sticky”. I always thought of taking that part as “sticky” because I’ve encountered “sticky” men before. Guys who won’t take no for an answer. I only bring this up because of the next part I want to highlight.

The next line here is after we are inside the house, which I also thought was interesting because Ringo says here that Masaya and Otousan share a single bedroom. I swear they have two rooms upstairs and then the bathroom but I could be confused.

Here’s where I get extra confused. When Masaya wants Ringo to join him on the balcony, you can hear him saying “daijoubu, daijoubu.” However, here we see what line the translators provide him with instead.

Whaaaat? I just don’t think Masaya Usui would say that. And also, isn’t that a “sticky” thing for a guy to say? This is the most difficult part of portraying Masaya in the translation, he comes off so bluntly and matter-of-factly. It makes me laugh so much because he says the most direct things but still goes “ehehe” at the end of his sentences. In the room sequence, it works especially poorly because he sounds like he’s not taking Ringo seriously, or trying to undermine her own feelings of nervousness, when really he’s just excited about his stargazing balcony and trying to contain himself. Here are a few more examples of Masaya sounding like a frat bro.

In conclusion, what I really really want to say is that I’m perhaps lucky that tone is the most that was butchered in Masaya’s route. He’s still plenty likeable. It’s really hard to make Masaya unlikeable. I know it’s not the same for some of the other routes and that makes me feel bad. It absolutely sucks that important topics were neglected to be handled with care, knowledge, and understanding. I like to think that new fans can tell when something’s not quite right, though. The quality of the writing of the original game is still noticeable even through the poor translation. And we will always have the original game that stands as an example of the high-quality writing. I suppose we will have to wait and see about a patch from Garumani to handle at least grammatical errors. Until then— let’s do our best!

Thinking about the famous Kenji Miyazawa poem Ame ni mo makezu [雨ニモマケズ] “Be not defeated by the rain” and how its short contents are reflected in Masaya’s speeches and actions throughout his route in Club Suicide, paying special attention to Days 1-5. The contents of the poem have been translated many times over but I’ve added the David Sulz 2002 version because though it is a bit flowery, I feel like his poeticism is a nice touch. I’ve bolded lines I feel are borrowed in the game based on theme and potentially dialogue in his route.

Masaya knows that he still has farther to go in his steps to living up to a heroic ideal and I feel like that knowledge in himself that he is failing to live up to these ideals is eating away at him, even if he acts like it doesn’t matter. Something he struggles with is his weakness to food, and a body that he feels like won’t carry him all the way to where he needs to go. I love using Miyazawa’s works to compare to Masaya because of his Christian influences in his writing, similar to Masaya’s dual culture identity and how Christianity influences his thoughts and beliefs, combining Buddhism and Christian theology.

i forgot that they actually compare him to a dog. lol. evil therapy dog that wants to kill you

this is the kokoro quote. this is a minor touch but i don't like the translation of this line. there isn't an 'iconic' english translation of kokoro (and even if there was, it likely wouldn't be recognisable to english readers) so there's no need for the TL to be copied directly from the book. but here's one anyway:

"i want to have trusted even just one person before i die, you know. can you be that person? would you do that for me?"

the loadbearing phrase here is "for me". it's a plea. yeah it's a plea in the english too but the emphasis is meant to be on "YOU" not on "I, FINALLY" if that makes sense. (iirc the final interstitial that i included in the top of the post is also meant to be a bit more of a heartfelt beg)

despite the number of words i dedicated to this i do think this one is minor. i will make a post about shiki's route wrt kokoro later (🤪). i read it because of clubsu and it's one of my fave books now... if you like the game (especially shiki's route) it's a must-read imo. i have not been compelled to watch ghost in the shell but maybe i should

another minor one but, to me 'silly girl' is not childish, it's something you say to a child. also adds gender where it's not meant to be. 'stupid' or 'idiot' would've been fine

this is the only translation thing that really puts da bees in my bonnet. this is meant to be in 3rd person. the topic is unchanged from the first sentence ("everyone", "people"). it's clearly him talking about himself but under the guise of giving advice. the whole point of his character is that he can't talk about himself at all without deflecting. unlike some of the metaphors or references used in the game this was not difficult to grasp or translate

anyway. besides the obvious qa mistakes, the translation was more than serviceable (besides i think? maybe? making his 'silly' personality less masc?) for the vast majority of the route. disappointing i had bigger quibbles with the more serious parts of the game... [edit: not feeling as charitable after finishing the route. after referring back to the jp his speech style is defs pretty different...]

also it took me all route to notice they dropped the coloured text in eng. i can think of at least 2 bigger-budget-than-this otome that had similar programming problems in english. man........................................................... can we kill <insert someone who funded a double-a gooner game here> and take their money

should make a longer post about it but ftr the gender dynamics stuff in shiki's route is a big part of why it's my fave otome game romance. the r/menslib "this is what the world made me" (without excusing his actions or denying that he's in a relative position of power) balanced with ringo's lightly-gender-tinged distrust... the one "i hate gender" line... his judgy ringo metaphor being a carnivore... the fact that it's ALL hugging and no kissing* and all the scenes that happen in the dark... forever vindicated btw

Poetry is a key part of each chapter of the game and to straight up lose that to just translate line by line leads to a plain and unmoving result in the 2nd picture. I have rewritten it as below, with my thought process(under cut for spoilers)

"The passage of time inches me closer to him.

I am becoming tainted as he.

I envy. I curse. I rot. I writhe.

Petty, loathsome feelings sprout from within."

The context being that Meiyo feels that he's becoming like his father, who he sees as a monster. He uses アイツ (aitsu) that is used in a way to refer casually to a person normally , but in this context to use it to his own dad, he sees him as a stranger, an imposter, an enemy.

From here I do not use 'that man' but rather constrict it to pronouns. By removing that Meiyo is talking about a human, it in turn makes the dad more sinister and monstrous.

A friend pointed this out to me, but I use words with the same starting letter for each ending word.

"The passage of time inches me-" an involuntary movement. Time is beyond human control, humans are powerless before it. It's like being on a travellator or an elevator. Japanese uses につれて which is a grammar tense for 'stringing along'.

"becoming tainted as he" like going through a reverse car wash as a result of the first line.

I swop the next two lines around to fit english poetry conventions. Meiyo next describes his impending metamorphosis.

I strive to keep the atmosphere of the last line by sticking to "I [verb]", I end up with an effect that makes meiyo seem like he's growing extra offshoots from his body with every claimant of the fruit of what he is becoming. I split. I become. I morph. I twist. It gets worse.

Meiyo categorizes his feelings as 'petty and filthy'. He also uses 芽生え which is where I insist in keeping the word sprout, which leads back to the metamorphosis and the plant imagery. Plants are often used in horror to subvert its usual association with life, and Meiyo's unwilling journey on this death travellator leads him to becoming a monster like his dad. I note the plant imagery with Meiyo being described with black lilies. Interesting how he doesn't accept the loathsome form of his dad but the 'beautiful' 'loathsome' form of the wicked black lily.

Stupid shit about Clubsu characters that dropped out of nowhere for my own circlejerking

- Eba will get taller, he can’t defy his genetics (so he’s late bloomer huh)

- Shiki wants to get into med school (which makes his bad ends even freakier with context)

- Out of all the boys, besides Shiki, Masaya and Meiyou have had previous relationships. Masaya had a girl friend he really liked when he was in kindergarten, when she moved, he was so sad that he wouldn’t eat. Meiyou had a special relationship with a female teacher for most of his middle school life, something of a kindred spirit rather than one of love and affection. Specificities of this relationship aren’t delved into, but Meiyou is not a virgin. 

- Kugajima got pretty popular after he took his mask off, but he doesn’t really know or give a shit about dating/going out with someone. (omg you naïve dumbshit)

- Meiyou’s considers himself gender neutral/fem leaning, and he self-proclaims himself as a lesbian. It’s not like he hates being a guy, but feminity is more appealing to him because of his view on beauty, and his view that he is a filthy monster. (sorry I use “him” because his gender identity is pretty fluid, but Meiyou is most definitely queer).

I can't read japanese or chinese but I have been obsessively googling ClubSu and Morpath since I found out about them and I REALLY want to see your analysis of the characters' names, or any other analysis or thoughts you have on the games. For the names, since that part is simple, I can break it down here. Tldr they all have the 5 avarices(in buddhism, man did i ever say this game also talks about religion a fair bit?) within their names.

Zaizen Eba: 財 means wealth(a euphemism for greed). Eba's name in kanji 絵馬 can also be read as Ema, which are those shrine placards to write your wishes on.

Kururugi Shiki: 色 is part of 色欲(lust). May also be a parallel to shiki seeking sex to fill his emptiness.

Usui Masaya: 睡 can mean sloth. Masaya sounds like 'messiah', a parallel to his messiah complex of sacrificing himself for the good of all suffering on this earth.

Kugajima Mitsuki: 喰 is gluttony. Mitsuki's whole family has plant parts in his name, so he follows this pattern with 木

Mabuchi Meiyo: meiyo's name sounds similar to the word for Pride (meiyou). His surname also has 淵, which refers to the depths of despair.

Shindou ringo: These parts are written by the creator. The usage of 'apple' is meant to act as an illusion to the forbidden fruit of knowledge. There are ties to each guy as well, apple is a red fruit(meiyo), the apple is part of the rose family, it has ties with lilies in literature(also meiyo), the rose plays a part in the story of The Little Prince(masaya). The rose has some ties with the angel(mitsuki).

I can go on and on but the translation's biggest flaw is that its obvious the translator(s) had not had the time or ability to read the entire thing and grasp how the characters are like. Idk even know how they can patch anything other than the technical issues bc it its throughout the entire thing: it is altogether a narrative flaw, the translator(s) is not a good writer. The worst thing is not many will kick a stink about it bc they don't have the original text to work with and by all normal points aside, the translation is decently readable.

But I'm tired of 'decently readable'. I'm tired of the time and again localizations come out, ppl get hyped, even though the loc is like not really the best with typos and everyone sounds the same, ppl are like 'its okay there's nothing wrong'. As long as ppl think there's nothing wrong nothing will change. Ppl just want things translated but not have it translated well. And then if it's translated too well aka bombastically, they get hit as being too woke or too westernized.

Clsd itself takes pride in its writing and I'm annoyed at the contextualization and character writing being ooc, but ppl don't realize it.

There's a part in Mitsuki's route that talks about his conflict in cosplaying his Best Boy, where he feels unworthy to become him, but he must. Because any other interpretation is more sacrilegeous than what he interprets at this point. And this is probably how I feel about this whole thing: I can't own it and I don't have the worth to, but seeing this happen in front of my eyes, I can't keep silent.

Stupid shit about Clubsu characters that dropped out of nowhere for my own circlejerking

- Eba will get taller, he can’t defy his genetics (so he’s late bloomer huh)

- Shiki wants to get into med school (which makes his bad ends even freakier with context)

- Out of all the boys, besides Shiki, Masaya and Meiyou have had previous relationships. Masaya had a girl friend he really liked when he was in kindergarten, when she moved, he was so sad that he wouldn’t eat. Meiyou had a special relationship with a female teacher for most of his middle school life, something of a kindred spirit rather than one of love and affection. Specificities of this relationship aren’t delved into, but Meiyou is not a virgin. 

- Kugajima got pretty popular after he took his mask off, but he doesn’t really know or give a shit about dating/going out with someone. (omg you naïve dumbshit)

- Meiyou’s considers himself gender neutral/fem leaning, and he self-proclaims himself as a lesbian. It’s not like he hates being a guy, but feminity is more appealing to him because of his view on beauty, and his view that he is a filthy monster. (sorry I use “him” because his gender identity is pretty fluid, but Meiyou is most definitely queer).

I can't read japanese or chinese but I have been obsessively googling ClubSu and Morpath since I found out about them and I REALLY want to see your analysis of the characters' names, or any other analysis or thoughts you have on the games. Your post about allegory and epiphanies really got me curious!

HAHA! Oh my god. I haven't even begun to dissect everything because there are so many elements to it that I need More Educated People to discuss with, the last time I got a Psychoanalysis mini lecture from a student of that module regarding some references. WHEW.

That and I tried writing about it but there's just so much to take in and so much I don't know how to put it into words.

For the names, since that part is simple, I can break it down here. Tldr they all have the 5 avarices(in buddhism, man did i ever say this game also talks about religion a fair bit?) within their names.

Zaizen Eba: 財 means wealth(a euphemism for greed). Eba's name in kanji 絵馬 can also be read as Ema, which are those shrine placards to write your wishes on.

Kururugi Shiki: 色 is part of 色欲(lust). May also be a parallel to shiki seeking sex to fill his emptiness.

Usui Masaya: 睡 can mean sloth. Masaya sounds like 'messiah', a parallel to his messiah complex of sacrificing himself for the good of all suffering on this earth.

Kugajima Mitsuki: 喰 is gluttony. Mitsuki's whole family has plant parts in his name, so he follows this pattern with 木

Mabuchi Meiyo: meiyo's name sounds similar to the word for Pride (meiyou). His surname also has 淵, which refers to the depths of despair.

Shindou ringo: These parts are written by the creator. The usage of 'apple' is meant to act as an illusion to the forbidden fruit of knowledge. There are ties to each guy as well, apple is a red fruit(meiyo), the apple is part of the rose family, it has ties with lilies in literature(also meiyo), the rose plays a part in the story of The Little Prince(masaya). The rose has some ties with the angel(mitsuki).
