Wednesday Morning – Physics in Everyday Life

Y/n slid into the same seat as last time, laptop in front of her, tea in hand. She didn’t have to glance up to know Jake Sim was approaching — his laugh carried a little too far in the echoing lecture hall.

Jake leaned his elbow on the desk, his voice dropping just enough to feel like a challenge.

“We’ll see.”

The professor started the lecture, launching into a lesson on motion and trajectories. It wasn’t bad — Y/N followed along fine — but Jake… Jake was alive in this. Every so often, he’d scribble something in his notebook that wasn’t even assigned, his pen moving quick and sure.

Midway through, the professor threw a foam ball into the crowd, asking for a volunteer to demonstrate a problem. It landed in Jake’s lap.

The professor dismissed the class with a reminder about the first assignment due next week. Students began shoving laptops into bags and making the slow shuffle toward the exit.

Jake fell into step beside y/n as they stepped into the crisp mid-morning air.

“So,” he said, balancing his notebook on one hand like it was nothing, “what’s your next class?”

“Neuropharmacology” she said. “You?”

“Woah —Public Speaking Friday morning.”

She stopped mid-step and looked at him. “Wait—Public Speaking? As in the gen-ed with Professor McLean?”

Jake’s mouth curved into a grin. “Yeah. Why?”

“I’m in that class too.”

He looked almost smug. “Guess I’ll be stuck with you three times a week now.”

“Or I’ll be stuck with you,” she countered.

They reached the intersection where the paths split. Jake hesitated for a second before holding out his phone.

“Here—put your number in. If I’m going to be your emotional support physicist and your public speaking hype man, I should at least be able to send memes about it.”

Y/n rolled her eyes but took the phone, typing her name and number into his contacts. She handed it back, and a second later, her own phone buzzed with a text:

Jake Sim : This is your friendly classmate tutor/hype man.

She smirked at the screen before slipping it into her pocket. “See you later, Sim.”

“Count on it,” he said, heading off.

CHAPTER TWO – GROUNDED

Later That Day – Campus Arts Building, Studio Hallway

The hallway smelled like pencil shavings, paint, and too much ambition. Y/n leaned against a cold wall, scrolling idly through her texts.

She didn’t look up when she heard soft footsteps approach—but she didn’t need to.

“You’re early,” Niki said simply, setting his sketchpad down on the bench across from her.

“Who?”

“Pause-before-you-answer.”

She groaned and slid down onto the bench beside him.

Niki didn’t respond. Just kept drawing, the scratch of his pencil soft and steady.

And still—without looking up—he said, “If you start falling for someone, just make sure they see you. Like, you you.”

And Niki didn’t ask again.

Niki’s pencil scratched steadily across the page, the sound filling the space between them. Y/n leaned her head back against the wall, eyes tracing the cracks in the ceiling tiles. They’d done this a hundred times before — sat in silence that wasn’t awkward, just easy.

“What are you drawing?” she asked after a while.

“Nothing,” he replied, which usually meant something.

She tilted her head to peek, but he angled the pad away without looking up.

“You’ll see when it’s done.”

Y/n smirked. “You’re dramatic.”

He didn’t answer — just tapped his pencil twice against the page before getting back to work.

They stayed like that for a few more minutes, the quiet stretching comfortably. Y/n scrolled through her phone. Niki shaded in something with slow, deliberate strokes.

Finally, without looking up, he asked,

“You still coming to the dance practice Friday?”

Y/n nodded. “Wouldn’t miss it. And before you ask — yes, I remember where to sit so I don’t block your little fan club’s view.”

That earned her the smallest smile. “It’s not a fan club.”

“It’s absolutely a fan club. With signs.”

Niki shook his head but didn’t argue.

A few more minutes passed before he closed the sketchpad, tucking it under his arm.

“Coffee before my class?”

He started walking toward the campus café without another word — which, from Niki, was as good as a yes.

CHAPTER ONE – UNEXPECTED VARIABLES

First Day After Break – 10:02AM – Physics in Everyday Life

“Alright,” he said. “Welcome to Physics in Everyday Life. I assume some of you are here because you didn’t have a choice.”

A couple students chuckled.

“Which means I have one job: to convince you physics is cooler than you think. And I intend to do that without equations—mostly.”

Jake leaned back in his chair, clearly unfazed.

The professor paced in front of the whiteboard, then spun around abruptly.
