Pop Goes Book Shopping!

While I was away this summer, I of course kept up on everything happening back in lovely Astoria, and something I've been dreaming of ever since I moved here happened on my own street.

The Astoria Bookshop had it's grand opening!

The first and only bookshop in this neighborhood finally arrived and I couldn't wait to get inside!

I put on my trendiest and most literary outfit and took a look in a book!

Things got a bit hot.

It wasn't my fault.  There's just a lot to lust after in this locally owned and operated independent bookshop.

Don't worry.  I calmed down.  I was actually on my best behavior in their adorable children's section.  I even took the time to read some stories to my photographer... who especially liked the wide selection, and my camo-colored, leopard print, pleated chiffon skirt paired with a black lace tank and leather sandals.  Pfft... photographers.  Happy Reading!

Help Coco Shop! (Again!)

I have a confession.  I love JCPenney's.  It's true.  I somehow always manage to find something affordable AND cute in there, and in the last few years they've partnered with some incredible designers to bring some stylish choices that wouldn't ordinarily be found at the JCP price point.  I feel like Target gets a lot of press for their designer partnerships, and JCP doesn't. I don't know why because look at this!

The dress above is L'amour by Nanette Lepore. It's not really my style, but I liked it.  I probably wouldn't buy this, but it was comfortable, a nice fit, and the material felt really nice.

Next up was this clearance item from Duro Olowu, a designer they worked with a little while ago. It was a bit too tight (and where would I wear this?) but I LOVED the shiny gold and green.  So up my alley. My heart said yes but my boobs said no.

Then I tried on some shorts.  I really liked the lime green Joe Fresh ones, but I wasn't sold on the floral pattern denim ones from Levi's.  The top is MNG by Mango.  I mainly grabbed it for shorts trying on purposes.  

Next up was a dress from a designer at JCP that I almost always love.  This is I Heart Ronson by Charlotte Ronson.  This line is always sooo good.  I liked this dress, but I feel like it's so similar to other things I've seen/tried on.  I also don't feel like this is a really good representation of what I Heart Ronson is like, but I gave it a fair shot. It does look like something Adele would wear though, which makes me love it.

Here's another L'amour by Nanette Lapore example- it's a separate skirt and top but I liked them together.  Again- not really my style, but I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone a bit and I have to admit I liked the way it looked.  However, I'm not crazy about the long sleeves for summer. Also, I really needed to pee by this point.

Finally we get to what I was MOST excited to try on at JCP this round.  Pearl by Georgina Chapman of Marchesa.  You might have seen Marchesa on every red carpet ever and it is always the prettiest and most wonderful.  So I was QUITE excited to try on some flirty feminine formal stuff.  Sadly, my first choice was this...

It just looks yucky on me.  Weird fit, weird material up top, but I loved the top color and I ADORED the skirt with it's sheer dots and all.  Unfortunately, just not the right dress for me.

My second choice was this- which I am still dreaming about.  It's a JUMPSUIT!

OBVIOUSLY it's meant to be worn with high heels and I didn't have any and I'm short and well, duh, that's why it looks too long BUT- I'm obsessed with it.  I couldn't quite come up with a "reason" to take this home, but I'm following the rule of obsession.  If I'm still obsessed by the time it goes on sale, I'll go back. ;)

Throwback Thursday?

I'VE GOT A LOT GOING ON.  I'M SORRY IF YOU THINK THIS IS A CHEAP IDEA. BUT LOOK AT HOW CUTE I WAS.

Coco beautiful on her fourth birthday.  She was tan, blonde, had perfect hair and a dress that's the envy of all hipsters today.

Clearly I was BORN to be a swimsuit model.

Pop Goes 42nd Street.

Fifty-five degrees, partly cloudy, a light breeze in the air?  Perfect chubby girl dress weather. No swamp ass and no thigh rub.  The only thing you need to feel pretty on a day like this is the confidence to walk out of the Subway in front of a large Serbian man and not care whether or not he can see your panties.  I feel light as the top of a lemon meringue pie.

Though I deeply wish somebody had told me I had a nasty ponytail holder around my wrist, I still want you to check out my cool new shades.

You might be wondering, "Coco, are you really in Queens?" or possibly, "Coco, would you describe what your wearing as a muumuu?"  My answers would be "No" and "Kind of?"

I am actually out front of the main branch of the New York Public Library at 42nd Street and 5th Avenue.  I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that this is my first Non-Queens location on Pop Goes Queens.  The fact is, Queens is part of New York City, and though I'm unlikely to venture from Astoria often, we Astorians do occasionally take in the finer points of the other boroughs.  Hell, you never know where I might take you guys.  I'LL GO WHEREVER MY DRESS LOOKS PRETTY!  This is AMERICA.

As an added bonus, this was the first time many gentleman of New York had seen a pair of knees in several months and and I was complimented often and gratuitously.  I loved every second of it.

How to Feel Like Coco Beautiful When You Don't

Awww! Poor wittle baby Coco has a cold and she hasn't felt much like doing a fancy photo shoot.  So, ladies and gents, here's how to feel pretty even when you're full of snot and you need to face the day.

First- Take a hot steamy shower and blow dry your hair right away.

Then- put on a cute, comfortable outfit and take your vitamins.

Next- Moisturize your face and lips- they're probably dry and chapped.  The antihistamines you might be taking could be drying out your skin so take a makeup break, avoid runny mascara from tearing itchy eyes and go all natural.  Wear simple, pretty jewelry for a feminine touch instead.

Finally, spray on your fave perfume to cover up your clammy cold sweat odors, and pull hair aside in a pretty uncomplicated braid that says, "I did something with my hair, despite how crappy I feel."

After all is said and done, use chemical-free instagram to cover up blemishes, red skin, dark circles under your eyes, and the rage of a thousand suns lurking within you.

Party Girls

I look like I'm standing next to some hot 80's giantess.

Olivia La Vida Loca and I LOVE throwing parties.  We have thrown a few epic ragers in our day and we have memories of joy and hangovers from each one.  So today's post is all about getting in the party spirit.  Let's just hope Olivia LVL doesn't fall asleep before it's time to clean up.

Here Olivia LVL demonstrates the three B's of party attire. 1. Bright Colors. 2. Big Hair 3. Bold Lip.  Are we loving this trendy orange color?  Yes we are.

Doorway to Heaven

When God closes a door, he puts another one two feet off the ground, in the middle of the wall, with a four inch space to stand from the outside.  God's weird like that.

It was NOT easy standing like this.  That's why I look so uncomfortable.  I am going to fall at any moment.

I'm not holding on to look cute.  I'm just holding on.  I had to have assistance getting up and down.

Moral of this story: Put doors on the ground.

Lucky Girl.

Nearly everything my mother was afraid of about me moving to New York City becomes what I love most about it.  This shady ass van parked in front of my apartment is a great example.  But really, how lucky that it parked there!  What could possibly better compliment this orange sherbet colored crochet-lace tank?

Well, maybe this super high bicycle seat that I'd never have ANY chance of getting my leg over...

But enough of that... this is a fashion blog after all.  Down to some serious modeling.

Hello Lovers!

I'm sorry I don't have a fabulous photo shoot to show you today, however, I have a MONSTER photo shoot scheduled for this weekend and in the coming weeks Coco is about to get bigger and better than ever.  We have lots of fun new models coming on to the blog.  I don't want to ruin the surprise but in the next few weeks you can also look forward to a cool new look for Pop Goes Queens.  For today, I'd LOVE to recommend some other fantastic blogs/sites for you to peruse.  I'm completely OBSESSED with all of these people, and they're all a big influence on my style, humor, and they inspire me on the daily.

TFDiaries by Megan Zietz- I am totally obsessed with this girl's "frugalista" style.  She consistently styles cool outfits in new and interesting ways and she's one of the fashion bloggers out there that you can almost always count on to get it so so right.

Girl With Curves- Such an inspiring blogger.  She constantly manages to be feminine and cutting edge and always looks like a million bucks no matter the price tag.

berBice [MRKT]- This pop culture site by Cacy Forgenie is so full of undiscovered treasures that everybody will be talking about in a few weeks, but show up first here.

Deskwarming- This hilarious web comic by my friend Jesse Iacovetto is a constant source of amusement and giggles.

Happy Now?- This quest of aspiring food blogger Rebecca Vigil is the place to read about and watch Rebecca's adventures in fulfilling her dreams, from her hilarious cooking show videos to her soul-tickling restaurant reviews, not to mention a healthy dose of random nail art, running stories and dreamy crooning.

Dairy Queens

Oh Hello Lovers!

I have a confession to make.  I love fro-yo.  Yes, it's true.  Fro-yo is trendier than a peplum top over Kim Kardashian's baby bump, but I shamelessly adore it.

That's why I put on this frothy little outfit and invited my friend Vixien Westwood over to Vanilla Sky here in Astoria for a little girly gossip, the perfect topping to our stylish afternoon.  

Vanilla Sky is one of my fave places in Astoria because of it's yummy fro-yo and variety of toppings but mainly I love it because it's a brightly lit oasis even on a cloudy winter day.  As New Yorkers ache for spring time, Vanilla Sky offers a brief moment in time where you can open your eyes wide, take off your coat and come out of hibernation for a sweet snack.

FINGER GUNS!

How crazy hot is Vixien?  Love this girl in her sassy green coat.  Vixien is a super smart and chic gossip columnist and former Knicks dancer that I met thrift shopping for vintage tea sets.

You guys should probably get used to these pewter sandal wedges.  I'm going to wear them A LOT.  More comfy than they look!

Fashion Fails

I have a loooooong history of getting it wrong.  Even Coco Beautiful does not always land on solid ground with fashion choices.  I am having a hectic week at work, and I was trying to think of something fun you might enjoy that didn't involve me getting into full hair and make-up after my 12-hour work day today.  SO, for this Thursday's post I thought you might like to take a peek at some of my fashion mistakes.

First of all, let's start slow...

I had some idea about doing a dramatic thing.  This was a test shot.  Obviously didn't work out.

Moving on to something a little worse...

That time I wore horizontal stripes at an unflattering angle AND a lime green headband.  Oh yes, and Olivia La Vida Loca used to bleach her hair.  Our friend Freddy Aquarius just looks amazing of course.  Pfft.  Men.  Amirite?

It gets worse...

I was trying to do a thing with "how to wear t-shirts."  Well, I'll just say it.  Not like this.

Then of course there was this...

This was a weird night.  This is in our apartment before we re-decorated.  Or perhaps I should say, before we decorated.  I'm not just cringing at the apartment though.  I'm cringing at those brown tights, outdated glasses, tin bangle... I think I need one of those Modelo's in the back.

Then of course there was laundry day...

Olivia LVL and I really went all out with this one.  Somehow before we left the house we decided to look as crazy and horrible as we could manage.

But nothing's been as bad as a recent trip to Urban Outfitters where I tried on one of the latest trends...

I knew even as I snapped this photo that this was not going to work, even if I'd been wearing normal pants and not gray leggings with snowboots.  I'm not sure I'm going to have a long relationship with faux leather.

Loco for Coco

Hi! I'm Coco Beautiful and I love crazy people.  I also love movies.  Put the two together, and you've got something incredible.  This Monday's post is all about the fashion of my favorite crazy on-screen couples.  In this first look, Coco Beautiful transforms into Good Jill Hunting... math genius from the bad part of town... troubled orphan... victim of abuse... crazy good-looking...

Here I am leaving a little present for my newest model, Simon Jewsef... just like in the end of the movie.  Isn't he dreamy?  He makes the whole tragic widower therapist good guy thing look... well, really good.

But I'm not some kind of flaky genius who just runs and leaves her cute professor, channeling Robin Williams on his stoop all by himself.  BTW, isn't my grungy bad girl 90's thing so adorbs?

Next up, Simon and I wanted to do something more recent and bring you our take on Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence's sweet work-out style from Silver Linings Playbook.  

J-Law knows how to rock a crazy pony tail and win some crazy awards for it.  I attribute at least 3% of her delicious performance to her pony tail work alone.

Ladies it's not every guy who can pull off charm in a trash bag.  I'm not sure Simon Jewsef is one of those guys, but he's trying.

These two may fight it out throughout the entire movie... but eventually love conquers all crazy.

Awww...

There's just something about a man in penguin pajama pants...

And finally, we bring you the craziest couple ever to hit the big screen... Black Swan and Black Swan.  I'm sorry, what's the point of a white swan?  There's plenty of drama here.

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it was a story about a ballerina actually turning into a black swan through like magic or something, because she's always like, pulling a feather out of her back or whatever and I still maintain that would have been a better movie. Or, for your consideration...

That bitch!

Okay, okay.  I confess.  It might be hard to find this as fashionable as I do, but look beyond.  I always wanted Pop Goes Queens to be inspired by pop culture (that is one reason for the name) so here's what I will point out.  

- The hi/low silky sheer black skirt I'm wearing is SO versatile and I promise it WILL pop up here again.

- I needed an excuse to wear ballet slippers.

- I put a hot guy in eye liner.  YOU'RE WELCOME.

- My blue Nike sneaks and copper feather necklace are the cutest ever.

- There is NO other fashion blog like this.

Inspired by an 8-year-old

Even Coco Beautiful has a day job, and mine is taking care of sweet little kiddos.  When I was 8-years-old I couldn't disagree more with my mom about what clothes I should be wearing, especially at 7 am when cereal was being shoveled down my throat and layers of jackets and hats and gloves were being piled on top of me and I just wanted "5 MORE MINUTES in bed.  I'm sick.  No, I can't go to school in that!  I'm allergic!"  

The 8-year-old girl I currently babysit, is pretty similar, although much better behaved and no less stylish... so to alleviate some early morning stress, this little baby fashion blogger and I have started a project.

We pick out cutie Baby Coco's clothes for the week together, including accessories, and keeping in mind what the weather will be like, what she's got planned at school that day, what's the most awesome thing she could possibly wear, etc... I take pictures, then I use her outfits as inspiration for outfits I'll wear (and I really wear them!).  After a couple of weeks and lots of important headband decisions later, Baby Coco and I have had a lot of fun (and her mom has had an easier time getting her dressed in the morning).  Here is a sampling of some outfits inspired by Baby C.

Monday, Tuesday

In the top example I took the monochromatic thing and flipped it with darker colors on top and lighter on bottom.  I tried to add the feminine touch that's in C's hearts and graphic Zara print to my navy hoodie by pairing it with a lace top and multi-colored pearls.  

I love how layers lend to mixing textures and I tried to do that with Baby C's clothes and with mine.  In the second example you can see this really nicely, with her big sequin heart and in mine with the crochet-lace top.  As you can see, the bottom example was almost a direct color combo inspiration, bringing orange and blue together in a fun way while avoiding looking like we're going to a Denver Broncos game.

Wednesday/Thursday

In this next example you can see that Baby C and I both felt like getting a little dressed up.  She went for it with a bright pink sweater over a crisp white collar, paired with black leggings and a super fun statement necklace, the dressy style of Baby C inspired my bold pink floral pattern and tuxedo jacket.  I even wore it in a recent Pop Goes Queens post.

In the bottom two I loved C's oversize polka-dot sweater cape (SO MUCH!  I WANT A POLKA-DOT SWEATER CAPE!) with the denim skirt, and I aimed for a trendier look with my own oversize sweater, and denim booty shorts over black tights. (WHY DON'T I HAVE A SWEATER CAPE?)

Playing with kids is a very rewarding job, but playing with kid's fashion, is honestly a privilege.

Eat, Pray, Love, Work, Play!

As we spring forward through March, I've been in a state of transformation lately, and I've been wanting to celebrate the oncoming beauty that's headed our way.  As daffodil shoots are reaching up from within the ground, fuzzy buds are forming on the branches of blossoming trees, the sunlight stretches and lingers, the rain showers drip and pour and mother nature reaches out of hibernation to transform into a new season, I'm excited to change myself.  No, I didn't start my period.  I'm talking about the beauty of SPRING!  This Monday's post is all about treating yo self, affirmations, motivation, confidence, romance, and ambition.  Each of these 5 looks focuses on a specific theme, with an inspirational message to accompany them.  We start with the three lovely verbs from, yes, that book... it's one of my all time favorites, but we take it a couple steps further.  Let's get started!

1. Eat

I LOVE ice cream, and this nummy treat really hit the spot.  I felt like a cutie cute cute-ster in my pretty navy dress, wine-colored ballet flats and mint sweater.  Indulgence is a dish best shared, and who better to enjoy it with than a good friend?

2. Pray

Don't laugh at me.  I always pray in full make-up and blingy pearls.  It makes me feel spiritual.  I just hang in that cozy spot that makes me feel peaceful, and take a moment to reflect.  My little cuddly bunny friend got in on the prayerful action too.  He's already so zen'd out anyway.  These lightweight pink floral fabrics and these stretchy booty shorts were so pretty and comfy.  I felt ready for a stroll on the beach, even if it was just on the shores of my own mind.

3. Love

You don't need a significant other to find romance (although of course it doesn't hurt) but why wait for it?  If you're single or if your lover is too busy, why not take yourself on a sunset stroll by the river?  Why not get dressed up just for you?  Treat yourself, not just to sweets and manicures, but to an opportunity to revel in it all.  Love yourself first, and you'll have that much more love to share with others, and if you're having a hard time finding something to love about yourself, what could be more inspiring than a view like this?  Take your own breath away and enjoy the moment.

4. Work

Wow!  I am not to be trifled with, huh?!  I read this great advice on Elizabeth Gilbert's facebook page (author of Eat, Pray, Love, among other great books) about how getting dressed for the day can really help untangle you from writer's block.  Something about putting on clothes really gets you in the frame of mind to work, to problem solve, to weed out the bad ideas and to bang out the good stuff.  I figure, why not look as great as possible?  Then you'll get the maximum juices flowing.  I'll be the first to admit, that I am currently typing this in bed in my pajamas, but when you need an extra kick in the pants, or for those non-writers or those who don't work from home, if you need some extra spring in your step to get through the daily slog, put on your fancy pants and get down to business ladies!  Also, my absolute favorite way to wear these bonkers amazing mint heels... is sitting down!

5.  Play

There are plenty of people who'll tell you to play it safe.  Don't wear white.  Don't mix prints.  Don't climb trees.  I'm happy to be the person who tells you the opposite.  Wear your FAVORITE clothes.  Wear what you'd want to die in.  I was overjoyed to romp around all afternoon in this get-up because it makes me feel joyful.  Just go for it!  Be fearless!  If you make a mistake, embrace it.  All good fashion must be in good fun!

American Woman

As you know, occasionally, the mega-stylish Olivia La Vida Loca, my bff, makes modeling appearances on this blog.  During a recent photo shoot  (which you'll see next week)  OLVL agreed to be my photographer, but I couldn't help turning the camera around on her.  Her outfit was just toooooo good.  It didn't hurt that we were in an incredible setting.  So this Thursday's post is all about OLVL, my sometimes photographer, hairstylist, make-up artist and my always roommate, bff, and life guru.  Let's play "getting to know you" with Olivia La Vida Loca.

First off, did you know Olivia is an actress?  It's true.  We became friends during rehearsals for a play we were in together.  I played her drunk mother and she played a crazy woman who thought she was Jackie O.

You can take the girl outta the swamp but you can't take the gator outta the girl!  Am I right?  Olivia is from Florida!

Olivia's hair is it's natural color for the first time in years!

Olivia is easily distracted by the sound of water.  This is true!  I'm not just saying it because she is looking off into her reflection in the east river in this photo.

Did you know OLVL can't smell farts?  It's true!  Also, don't worry. She only fainted on this couch because being so pretty is exhausting.
