Nope, I’m in hopeful mode again. I’m sure that will change before I even reach the end of this post but for now I’m going to enjoy it.
You don’t have Armand’s maker call him “rotten boy” then show proof of the rot and then not show us how the rot first began to take hold of him. You do not have those words come out Marius’ mouth twice if they mean nothing. Marius of all people, who the writers and actors have openly acknowledged as a “controversial” character.
You do not have Louis say to Armand that he needs a love that’ll cradle him in the final episode before we begin the adaptation of the book where Armand finally gets his great love only for nothing to happen. DM are toxic but they are also gentle and sweet with each other. There’s the appeal of the relationship. Armand gets to be emotional and open because Daniel brings that out of him.
You don’t do these things if they aren’t going anywhere. I know there is a lot to genuinely criticise but I also feel like we have been steeping in each other’s negativity for too long at the same time. I think both things are true and I do not believe Hannah would write that cradle line and speak with the level of passion about Armand that she does if there was no plan. She will have known she was taking over from Rolin for much longer than we have. There’s a long game here. Armand will be treated kindly be the narrative. This is only the beginning.
