any other genderqueer guys feel like your gender applies to your attraction in different ways depending on who you’re attracted to

like i’m attracted to men as a guy, attracted to women as genderqueer, and attracted to anyone who’s not 100% man or 100% woman as some combination of the two

and no matter what, it’s definitely queer attraction, never straight, although my attraction to men feels the most distinctly gay

i can’t explain how i know that but i do know it’s true, it just *feels right* when i say it

short answer, yeah you can! genderqueer can encompass a lot of experiences, and was specifically chosen over nonbinary so it could be used by people who either still feel binary or feel like neither fits them

not all genderqueer guys are trans, and that’s okay!

some may not use the label because of its western/colonialist implications

some may not use the label because of its implication that they will transition

some may not use the label because of problems in the trans community

some may not use the label because it doesn’t feel accurate to their relationship with their assigned sex

some may not use the label for a variety of other reasons

some may not use the label simply because they don’t want to

regardless of your reasons for not identifying as trans, you’re welcome here and those or us who are trans support you!

i think i might be a genderqueer guy but i'm not sure. i'm an afab person who currently is living as a trans man/boy. i have never felt comfortable with using the words male, boy, and man for myself and i do feel comfortable with guy. i present neutrally but i don't feel like i'm nonbinary. i definitely feel male in some way, but i don't feel it as strongly as other trans men i've talked to? i really like some feminine gender elements and i hate being called a man. i'm sorry this is so long <3

whether or not you decide to call yourself a genderqueer guy is entirely up to you that’s what really matters, but i will say i really relate to a lot of what you’ve said here as a genderqueer guy myself!

if you do decide it works for you, our little community here is happy to have you, and if not i wish you luck in finding something that does!

“can i still be a genderqueer guy if...?” yes. it doesn’t matter how you complete that question, the answer is yes.

if the term ‘genderqueer guy’ resonates with you, it’s for you. if it makes you feel good, it’s for you. if it describes you well, it’s for you.

don’t worry about the “what ifs”. don’t torture yourself wondering if your body or presentation or transition or orientation or past or other labels or anything else about you somehow disqualifies you.

gender is complicated. people are too expansive for rigidly defined labels - you’re allowed to be complex. give yourself permission to use labels that make yourself happy even if others might not understand.

whether you use it publicly or just in your head, whether you use it forever or just for a little while, whether you use it as a standalone identity or umbrella term or microlabel, whether it matches perfectly with your other labels or seems to contradict them...it’s for you.

if you want to be a genderqueer guy, you can be and you are.

yeah, you totally could! i have similar feelings toward calling myself nonbinary (although i have been getting more used to it recently), part of the reason i love the word genderqueer is that it doesn’t really have any specific implications so it’s a great word to have when others just don’t quite fit

I'm genderqueer, and I don't identify as nonbinary! Genderqueer has been used for all sorts of gender expansive & non-normative experiences, not just nonbinary or even just trans! And while some of it's popularization thoughout the 2000s focused on nonbinary experiences under it's umbrella I think trying to narrow it down to just that erases some of its beauty and utility as a word that covers many queer experiences. I use genderqueer because it doesn't ask me to choose between binary or nonbinary, and it doesn't require me to neatly split my experience between my sexuality, gender, or expression. To anon I'd say if genderqueer feels right or useful in describing your experience with gender then it's open to you.

I think my reasons are maybe slightly different but still similar - I don’t identify as non-binary (and I especially loathe being referred to as an ‘enby’). Just because someone technically belongs to a category or fits a label doesn’t mean they have to identify with it or label themselves that way. I knew the term genderqueer way before the term non-binary so it’s part an age thing, but also in part it’s because I hate how bigots have been trying to erase us; how they’re trying to rewrite history and to rob us of the word queer and that includes genderqueer; how they’ve tried to tell us we cannot use the words and spread lies about how genderqueer is some term ‘made up within the past couple of years by special snowflake cishets on tumblr who want to be oppressed’ and (where they’re not just straight up trying to deny non-binary genders even exist) trying to force the label non-binary onto all of us, anyone whose gender is queer or genderqueer, in place of either/both those words. Far from putting me off using genderqueer and queer, they’ve just made me dislike the term non-binary (as a self-identifier) even more and more determined to never use it as a self-identifier.

you sure could!! there are a ton of experiences that fall under the label and i’d say that definitely could be one - if you feel like it fits you, go for it!!
