Heyy, loving your studyblr! 😍 I’m currently in Year 11 and am thinking of taking the exact A-levels as you. I’ve pretty much made up my mind about taking A-level Psychology and Biology, but I’m still not too sure on whether I should be choosing English Language. I know this differs depending on the exam board you are under, but what is the subject like and what topics do you study? Would you say the subject entails a lot of creative writing, or is it more analytical/historical, etc?

Hey! Personally, I LOVE English Language. My exam board is AQA and the topics we study are super varied. On one side of the course we do a lot about language change over time and also what factors affect language use (which I find super interesting, we talk a lot about regional accent and dialect which can be very funny as people try and put on different accents to illustrate their points). Then on the other side we do child language development and child writing development which is really good also. In terms of what we write, it’s a pretty even balance. For the exam we have to do an analytical essay, an evaluative essay and an opinion article (which is the creative bit). We also do creative writing for coursework, as one of the pieces we do is a language investigation, but the other side is a piece of original writing, so I’d say there’s a pretty even balance! It also overlaps with Psychology quite a bit with Child Language Development as we talk about Behaviourist Theory and stuff, so it fits in really well and I find my subjects are quite a nice blend. I hope this helped! :)

Hi! I'm not sure if you're asking about A Level or GCSE English Language, but for A Level I focus on really learning the terminology using flashcards and making sure I'm confident with the studies. For GCSE, the only way I found I could really revise was by doing practice questions and going over the anthology pieces!

You're 16 so you're year 12 right? Just a little advice from me, I'm year 13. Keep all your notes at the end of the year. Wait until next year to decide what to throw away.

yeah, we don't do AS levels so I'm definitely planning on keeping my notes!!

what are A-levels exactly?

they are the course you take during your last two years of high school here in the UK - you do 3/4 subjects and take exams in them all at the end of year 13!
