would it be fair to say that part of why qifrey is willing to violently wield water more than any other element (e.g. the dragon, romonon, engendale) is related to how being left to drown in a coffin was his first clear memory of violence, however indirect, being used on him so he can never divorce that pain from water itself

there's this really neat thing that Qifrey does-- as the girl's teacher, and for how he came into witch society-- that reeeally demonstrates the distance he keeps from his little family

his initial instinct, when threatened, is to be violent and subdue the percieved 'assailant' by whatever means necessary -> this is worth noting, because he's the only one in the atelier with this instinct. Olruggio and the girls' default to true-blue witchiness, and seek to use magic to help without causing too much harm

a good anime-friendly example of this: the introduction of the Knights Moralis [Richeh tackles Easthies arm, Tetia sets the pennant on fire-- just weak enough to burn out before reaching anybody. Qifrey puts a blade to Easthies throat]

even Coco, an outsider, has the witchy instinct to use magic for helping-- as seen with the dragon, where she vyes for a peaceful way to subdue it -> whereas, Qifrey makes a dragon that dwarfs it and... essentially waterboards//half drowns the thing

it's really interesting, to me, because Qifrey is their teacher-- he's the one that's supposed to be ingraining that instinct into them, rather than contradicting his own teachings

imagine that you’re working security for the biggest event of the year and you kick a pervert out for sexually harassing people but he manages to talk his way out of punishment. and then you go back to your job just to find out that your coworker got mugged and beaten up so badly that he has permanent amnesia. and then you have to go back to your job like nothing happened and be the security at the event and then suddenly something blocks out the moon. because the pervert from before transformed into a fucking kaiju. and then while you’re fighting the kaiju as hard as you possibly can you’re helped out by a nice guy who wants to find his son. so you take him through the city but when you find his son you realize his son works for the same people who mugged your coworker. so you attack him but the nice guy holds you back and everyone tells you that your job is evil and you realize that even though you started working security to help children you’ve become someone who attacks children. and then you’re told to keep attacking by your boss over the phone and then he has an argument over the phone with what sounds like a 12 year old girl before hanging up and then he calls back and tells you it’s ok and you can stop attacking. so you just kind of stand there with this nice guy and his son and his son falls asleep. and then a different coworker of yours runs in and attacks you and tells you you’re morally bankrupt for wanting people to live and you for real think he’s going to kill you and then two 12 year olds hit him with a tranquilizer dart. and then the 12 year olds get an idea and run off. and then out of nowhere the nice guy begs you to adopt his son and teach him how to be a security guard. and then his son turns into a tree. and then a 12 year old girl runs in saying the only way to save him is to give him amnesia but before you can give a 12 year old boy amnesia the nice guy goes “i got this” and straight up dies while you can only helplessly watch. and his son is still a tree. and then your coworker who was mugged and has amnesia starts trying to cut down the tree. and then the tree and the boy disappear. and your coworker leaves because he doesn’t recognize you anymore. and you don’t know what to think anymore or if your job is even worth it.

and then the next day your boss asks if you want to be promoted to Evil security guard. i think luluci deserves a whole sea of flans at this point.

it's been pointed out before that qifrey's outfits for his apprentices are heavily based on his outfit as beldaruit's apprentice, but it is interesting how that in itself is actually a bit of an oddity in witch society

other witch masters we've seen like hiehart, beldaruit with riliphin, those two witches who helped with the fire when coco was sick, and even euini's teacher all gave them outfits similar to if not exactly like theirs

like in some ways you can interpret it as a way of ensuring that should apprentice and master get separated it'll be much easier to figure out who the other one is based on it, which could be part of why easthies didn't recognize/guess that agott and coco are qifrey's apprentices immediately

with this in mind, i propose the grim idea that should anything happen to qifrey, others in the great hall have seen the girls and beldaruit around each other already and assume that he has some new apprentices and brings them to him. this is a stressful situation for everyone involved, especially if we imagine that qifrey knew they looked similar enough for that mistake to happen and unconsciously or not trusts that beldaruit will at least keep them safe

Qifrey just got home from the literal week from HELL in Ezrest, had to go find Coco (who ran away to her house to see if the counterclock spell would work), and finally was able to sit down and meal plan alone because Olruggio took the girls out to help him.

Olruggio: *faraway look* notes. So that is what kids do these days when they go away on a stupid trip they need to do for whatever reason. They leave notes. For their friends. With information written down, even. Where were these luxuries when Qifrey had his “I WaLk A LoNeLy ROaD” phase. What a miracle to be alive in a time when people tell you where they go and how long they plan to be gone. Progress has truly come so far. Makes me feel old.
