Hi, Phandom!
Have you ever been haunted by a story’s ending? For me, that story has always been The Phantom of the Opera. I was not haunted by the ghost, but by the man left in the darkness when the final curtain fell. After seeing the play live again this past March, the old ache returned, the refusal to believe that a life so full of pain had to end in solitude.
This story is my answer to that ache. It is my first foray into writing fanfiction, a journey I felt compelled to take. It is called A Life Unwritten, and it is now available on AO3. I’m a little nervous because this is my first time ever writing and sharing a fanfiction.
A Life Unwritten:
What if the final act was not an ending, but an escape?
What if the girl did not choose the hero, but chose instead to offer a hand to the man the world called a monster?
The world has read the story of the Phantom of the Opera, a tale of gothic tragedy ending, as all good tragedies should, in sorrow and solitude. It is a legend of impeccable aesthetics, of a masked genius whose irresistible allure was matched only by his monstrous reputation. But that was the story written for the stage, a convenient and deeply satisfying lie. The truth is a quieter, more complicated, and infinitely more human melody—a life that began after the final, chaotic curtain fell.
This is the story of a seventeen-year-old soprano who chose to stay with a man drowning in his own despair—a man so convinced of his monstrosity he could not bear a simple touch. Her choice was not the love of poets, but something rarer: an act of recognition, a lonely soul refusing to abandon another.
When the applause fades and the legend dies, what music can two lonely souls make in the quiet?
I simply could not accept that Erik's story had to end in solitude and despair. This fanfiction is my way of giving him the happiness he was so cruelly denied. It's a long, detailed story that I'm still in the process of writing, but I'm so excited to share the journey with you all.
What to Expect:
A post-Don Juan Triumphant canon divergence. The story picks up right in the chaos of the final act.
A true SLOW BURN. This is all about the psychological healing and the earned, quiet love between two very broken people.
My interpretation of Christine is named 'Marni'. This was a personal choice to give me the creative liberty to explore her journey in a new way, allowing her to grow into the woman she becomes in this specific narrative.
Erik gets a happy ending. Because he deserves it.
This story draws inspiration from Gaston Leroux’s novel, Susan Kay’s Phantom, and the glorious Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. I truly hope you love it as much as I am loving writing it. Your thoughts and feedback would mean the world to me!
