  Art blinked at the man in front of him, only now taking in the uniform he wore and realizing that he must have been an employee from the pet store that lost the snake. Stunned briefly by the sheer dumb luck of literally crashing into the person he was just about to start tracking down, it was a few moments before he strung together a response.

  “I’m Art,” he said finally. “It’s nice to meet you, although the circumstances could be better. I’m a private investigator and yes, I’m looking for the snake that was reported missing earlier today.”

  He always thought it best to be up front when interviewing witnesses like this, so that he could get as much information as possible. He might not have had the same authority here that he was used to back in Yokohama, but he still found himself taking charge of the situation with ease.

  “It’s a bit unusual, but since this case is rather time-sensitive, teaming up is a good idea,” he continued, bowing slightly in acknowledgement. “How about you catch me up on what happened while we go to the place where the snake was last seen?”

Komaeda nodded, allowing the detective to lead him through the city as he though about what kind of information he could share. “Well, the snake was there at he beginning of my shift. I was in charge of cleaning the snake’s habitat, so I was going to do that when I noticed that it was empty... I think there just so happened to be a problem with the lock, but it didn’t cause any issues until now,” he said thoughtfully. “Then I left to go find the snake, and that’s when I ran in to you.”

There wasn’t really that much for him to add--he couldn’t say precisely when the snake went missing, for one, and he also had no idea where a snake would go. It occurred to him that he could probably ask Gundam for help, but he thought it would probably be faster if he used his own strategy. 

“I was just planning on walking around a bit and seeing what I came across,” he explained. The odds that he would find something useful this way were much higher than for him than for an average person, after all.

Komaeda’s words were harsh. Hajime wasn’t sure what he had done to deserve backlash for worrying about his classmate (of all things?). Still, Komaeda clearly wanted him to drop the subject so Hajime wouldn’t push it any further–

“Oh. OK. I guess I’ll just go fuck myself then.” –but not without getting the last word in. This was Komaeda alright. Just moments ago Hajime had been relieved to see him and now he was already irritated. Shaking his head, Hajime made an attempt to not let the sudden anger which had overcome him get the better of him.

“Your whole arm situation aside, are you alright?”

Komaeda blinked at him. That was... not really what he’d expected Hinata to say. “I’m... fine,” he said shortly. It would be better if Hinata would stop worrying about him, but he supposed that saying so directly didn’t seem to be deterring him as effectively as he’d hoped. Komaeda still thought it was worth repeating. “I’m nothing to worry about.”

He wondered if he should treat Hinata the way he had on the island after he’d learned about despair. Depending on how many memories he had, Hinata might even be expecting him to act like that.

And yet... He didn’t want to. It was entirely too selfish, but if Komaeda had the chance now to talk to Hinata like it was before there were so many things Komaeda had to be forgiven for, he wanted to take it. And suddenly something close to the truth was spilling out of his mouth.

“I’m glad to see you here, Hinata-kun.”

      “Hinata what now? Y’know that guy?”

      And here’s the queen of the club herself, happening to overhear this guy. Who the hell even talks to themselves anymore? Apparently he does, and he also seems to know one of her workers! Fancy that. In any case, Peacock looks up at Komaeda, hand on her chin as she tries to size him up. Maybe it’d be more fun to not let him know that she runs the damn place.

      “Yer definitely not the typical club-goer, are ya, kid?” She’s certainly one to talk. “Honestly, you look like the sort of guy that just stays in his room all day. Must’ve taken a lot of effort to get yerself in here!”

“Well... I suppose that’s true.” Komaeda truly wasn’t the kind of person that visited clubs--he hated them, actually. But this person was rubbing him the wrong way. “I’m only here because... Well, I didn’t expect Hinata-kun to be someone who went to places like this, either.”

Saying that, he quickly realized that she would probably have no idea who that was. “He’s, ah... my friend. Who happens to work here,” he added, hesitantly. It wasn’t the most correct explanation, probably, but he didn’t know what else to call him to a total stranger.

Komaeda tended to experience extremely outrageous situations on a regular basis, it was true. He’d been through everything from winning lottery tickets to improbably meteor strikes, and one could almost say he was used to it by now, for however much one could expect the unexpected to happen to them.

But even still, it was rather difficult to anticipate situations like the one he currently found himself in.

Really, he had just been trying to take a walk. But he supposed some days that was too much to ask for, because one moment he was simply minding his own business on a relaxing stroll and the next he was tripping and stumbling and falling face first onto another pedestrian at the same moment as a seemingly innocuous telephone pole came toppling down right on the spot where they had both been standing a moment ago.

Trying to parse the logistics of what had just happened seemed kind of pointless, so he turned to the stranger he had just inadvertently endangered (and maybe also saved?) in the span of a few seconds. They were sprawled all over the sidewalk, but at least they hadn’t been crushed, right?

“I’m sorry, are you al--Ah, wait! Naegi-kun?”

Despite how uncomfortable it was to look at Komaeda’s prosthetic hand, Hajime couldn’t keep his eyes off it. Watching the individual parts of the fingers move he felt that he had a good understanding of the mechanics behind it, which was more than just a little bit strange considering how he wasn’t the one in possession of the Ultimate Mechanic talent.

“……Did your bad luck do this to you?” Being told not to get upset over this didn’t stop Hajime from feeling that way exact. Komaeda had done terrible things and Hajime still held that against him, but it wasn’t like Hajime wanted to see him suffer. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”

Not a day had passed since arriving at Stella City in which Hajime hadn’t worried about the well being of the classmates he had left behind. There was no way of knowing if he would have been able to make a difference if he had been present when Komaeda’s bad luck had befallen him, but at the very least he would have tried to keep him out of harm’s way. Because Hajime had failed to even try to save Komaeda from his bad luck, Hajime couldn’t help but feel like he was at least partly responsible for the loss of Komaeda’s hand.  

“I should have been there…”

Komaeda wasn’t sure how to respond to this, so for a moment, he just stood there, staring at his companion in silence and trying to process everything that was going on at once. Hinata thought he’d lost his hand because of his bad luck? So, he really, honestly didn’t remember despair? Those memories were completely missing once again?

That was... What exactly did that mean? Was this the Hinata from before that he was talking to? What had happened to Izuru, then? On the island, it had been the case that Hinata didn’t retain any of his... modifications, but that was a virtual reality existence. What if here, he was still “talented?”

That situation would be, in a word, problematic--at best.

Then there was the unexpected nature of Hinata’s response. It was an unfathomable reaction; certainly not the same as the one he tended to receive, when the... circumstances surrounding his hand were known.

It wasn’t pity, or disgust... It was almost like guilt, as if Hinata were blaming himself. 

Komaeda, becoming more and more visibly agitated as his thought processes came to their conclusions, finally spoke up, using some magnificent combination of deflection (to avoid wherever that last train of thought went) and needling (to hopefully get some kind of answer without revealing anything too risky).

“Like I said, it’s really not something you should worry about. There was nothing someone like you could have done about it, anyway.”

“My devas are indeed at prime condition for their species! They have also recently gotten a sand bath as they so enjoy.” He exclaimed with vigor. Sand baths were perhaps a little more uncommon for hamsters, but most rodents do enjoy it as part of their cleaning routine. And he had recently spent his dwindling money on the finest sand.

“They have summoned their powers to defeat monokuma and find ourselves in a peaceful town!” He proudly exclaimed while the hamsters gladly crawled around his shoulders and one even nibbling a little at his scarf. “Perhaps however, it seems there is more responsibilities…”He paused, thinking about how he had to plan financially for the month.

Soon however, he let out a gasp. A shelter? And Nagito worked there too!“Show me your base for your career, human! At once!” He very firmly demanded, already looking absolutely excited despite his frowning face.

“Oh, of course! I’m sure they could very much use your expertise, after all,” Komaeda said, gesturing for his companion to follow as he started off down the sidewalk toward his place of work.

“It’s actually just this way... Anyway, while we walk, I wanted to know--it’s presumptuous of me, but could I ask you what you meant about defeating Monokuma?”

It was a strange thing to say... Then again, he was talking to Gundam, so it was almost par for the course. Did he mean it in some sort of metaphorical way? It was hard to tell, but if he had missing memories like Hinata seemed to... Well, that was something he wanted to know sooner rather than later.

  “ The city’s history? ” Feliciano parroted, letting out a low hum as he looked towards the sky. “ I’ve been wondering about that too! There’s a legend that I read about in the library once… do you want me to tell you about that? ”

  “ Oh! If you wanna hear the history of something else afterwards, I can definitely talk a lot about European history! ” he offered, flashing a bright smile in Komaeda’s direction. “ It’s your choice in the end, of course! ”

“A legend?”

Komeada brought a hand to his face in thought. It was kind of questionable that a legend would have any true or valuable information in it, but if that was all that was known about this place...

“It does sound interesting, actually,” he said, smiling. “Can you start with that? Ah, but I don’t mind if you wanted to talk about other things, too.” His companion seemed to be pretty knowledgeable about history, and it would be rude to ignore that. Komaeda was the one on the tour, after all.

MORE #SDR2 SPOILERS

  Nanami watched her friend spiral with mounting dismay. She was a little unsure what to do–based on what he said, he must have all of his memories from the New World Program and the information he got upon waking up, but he wasn’t… Well, he seemed a lot more upset than she would have expected. She could understand that her existence might cause him to doubt the nature of reality in some ways, but she didn’t really get it.

  Leaving it there wasn’t good enough, though. She needed to try harder to understand him this time, and hopefully she would be able to calm him down. Telling him everything that she didn’t get a chance to say to him back then seemed like a good place to start.

  “…Komaeda-kun,” she said eventually, “it’s okay, I’m not mad at you for what you did. It was just the horrible circumstances we were in that caused you to do that, I think.”

  She trailed off a bit, seeming to gather herself for the next part of what she wanted to say. She took a deep breath, paused again, and then spoke in the same quiet, measured voice that she always used. She looked him right in the eyes as she spoke, all of her previous tiredness forgotten as she fixed him with her most serious expression. It might have been a bit unnerving, but she didn’t seem to notice.

  “More importantly, Komaeda-kun… I want to apologize to you. Back on the island, I was always talking about how important it was to believe in each other, and how we shouldn’t give up on anyone… But we let you down, I think. If I had tried harder to reach out to you, then things would have been a lot different, maybe. I wasn’t… a very good guide after all. From the bottom of my heart, I’m sorry.”

Despite all the times he might have imagined what Nanami would say to him had they ever had the chance to meet again, Komaeda was completely unprepared to hear an apology.

“You’re... sorry?”

This wasn’t a situation he knew how to respond to. This wasn’t the reaction he had been expecting to get. Hatred, scorn, disappointment, confusion... He had been prepared for something more along those lines. But she was apologizing?

“I suppose... the ability to forgive even trash like me is something I should have expected from you... You were our hope, after all. But I can’t accept that,” he said, with a pained, twisted expression on his face. “For me to take advantage of your kindness like that... I’m truly the lowest of the low.”

Komaeda wrapped his arms around himself, hands clutching at his sides, body language completely closed-off. “Besides, you misunderstand... I don’t regret my actions. If you want to think it was just a result of the mutual killing situation, that’s fine. But I don’t think I was wrong, knowing what I knew. It was just the fact that my plan was figured out that caused that outcome...”

The outcome which he was secretly glad had come about. He was glad he hadn’t killed his friends and saved Nanami like he’d planned, even if he still thought he hadn’t been wrong.

Seeing as Komaeda had taken back his hand before Hajime had had the chance to grab it and be pulled up, Hajime had to push himself up. Perhaps that was for the better, because Hajime quickly noticed there was something off about the hand that had been offered to him a moment ago. 

“Speaking of things I don’t remember…” Hajime said, staring intensely at Komaeda’s hand as a feeling of dread began to creep up the inside of his stomach. “Your hand…….. Why is it like that? What happened while I was gone?”

Cold sweat ran down his temples and his shirt damply stuck to his back as he waited for Komaeda to give him an explanation. The sight of Komaeda’s prosthetic hand was unsettling for reasons Hajime couldn’t fully grasp. He grimaced as a headache began to throb behind his eyes. 

“Who did that to you?”

“Oh... Are you saying you don’t know?”

So, memory loss?

Of all the explanations for Hinata’s weird reaction to him, this one was one of the most troubling. The last time Hinata had ended up with fewer memories than him, after all, was on Jabberwock Island. Were they in a similar situation now? It was practically impossible to tell without more information, but now Komaeda was going to have to be wary of that.

Either way, this meant... Hinata didn’t have his memories of waking up? How much did he remember, then?

Realizing that he had paused for maybe a moment too long and that he owed Hinata some kind of explanation, Komeada looked down at his suspicious hand and curled the prosthetic fingers a bit.

“It’s nothing else but the result of my own inadequacies. You shouldn’t get upset over it, Hinata-kun.”

  So far, Art hadn’t thought that the cases he got here in Stella City were noticeably more absurd than the ones he worked back in Yokohama (minus all the sheep, of course). They actually even tended to be tame in comparison, since there were no minimums involved to add that extra layer of complication. While he wouldn’t say that it had been a walk in the park since he started freelancing here, he hadn’t seen much that caught his eye, either.

  Until today, when he got a phone call first thing in the morning about a renegade boa constrictor.

  “What?” he said into his phone, alarm mounting as he stepped out of the office building where he was renting a room. “It’s a poisonous snake and you haven’t–wait, don’t hang up yet–”

  Frowning in disbelief at the number pad now glowing on his phone screen, he moved to immediately call back–except he crashed right into another pedestrian instead, leaving them both sprawled on the ground.

  As soon as he’d gotten his bearings, Art went to help the stranger to his feet.

  “Sorry about that, I’m in a bit of a rush. You’re not hurt, are you?”

Komaeda blinked up at the man who had just run into him, processing the part of the phone conversation he had just heard. He glanced at the building that the stranger had just stepped out of--a detective agency?

“Ah, what a coincidence! Are you by any chance looking for a missing snake?” Komaeda asked as he was helped to his feet. “It’s really regrettable, but... It seems like it escaped from the pet shelter over here.”

That should be enough information for Mr. Detective, he thought--at least for now, anyway.

“If you want, we could team up,” he offered cheerfully. “I’m Komaeda.”

It had already been a day since his great devas had unleashed their power and freed everyone and after seeing Chiaki, he had looked for others as well scouting the dark devas assistance to search for others.

According to them they had found the crazy one, so it was either Hajime, the foolish mortal daring to interact with such a foul beast such as Gundham, or Komaeda.

Stepping right in front of Komaeda, where they had led him. With a mighty laugh he struck one of his dark poses and pointed at the other.

“Perhaps there is a thing you wish to praise my might devas for? Or is your mind so small you can not comprehend their greatness?”

Komaeda stopped short as someone stepped directly into his path, surprised by the sudden interruption, but only for a moment as his opening line and appearance left little room for confusion of identity. 

“Ah, Tanaka-kun? You’re here, too?” he asked, giving his former classmate a smile. It wasn’t really such a surprise to him, since so many of them seemed to be ending up here.

“I don’t really have any idea what you’re talking about,” Komaeda continued, tilting his head to the side, “but as for your hamsters, they’re looking quite healthy! I’m glad they were able to make it here safely along with you.”

He crossed his arms, a thought occurring to him. “Actually, it seems like somehow I have a job at the pet shelter here, so... If you ever need something, I can show you where it is. Not that the Super High School Level Animal Breeder would ever need help caring for his animals from the likes of me.”

“It’s probably a boring answer, but for me, noise-cancelling white noise generators are really useful… I can’t sleep when there’s too much noise. Sometimes it doesn’t help, though, and that’s usually when it’s better to take a walk outside, as long as it’s not a crowded place or busy time of day.”
