Almost immediately, Kingston’s brows furrow and his bottom lip sticks out in a pout, wishing that he would have picked up more French in the time that he and Percy have been friends to make his false statement more realistic. “Don’t blame me for not knowing much more… blame yourself for not teaching me,” is the defense he goes with, arms crossing over his chest as he leans back in his seat. “Me? Flattering you? Why would I ever do that, beautiful?” King inquires, leaning forward to rest his chin against his palm before taking a sip from his own cup as he grins widely at the other boy’s flushed cheeks.
Percy ends up having to clench his fingers tighter around his charcoal pencil, the urge to swipe his thumb along Kingston’s protruding lower lip suddenly ridiculously overwhelming in that moment. “Surely it’d be just as easy to have picked up on a few words by now, vrai?” He quirks his head to the side, grin quirking at the ends of his lips in mild amusement. “Or do I just need to start throwing out phrases other than baise-moi and sucer ma bite?” Teeth catch his lower lip in a teasing manner, eyebrows lifting up over batting eyelashes.

Holden gives a half shrug. “Worth a shot,” he says as Percy takes the card. A card really wasn’t the greatest gift he could give–and neither was the alcohol, honestly–but Holden still felt a little off-beat as he and his friend worked their way back to how it had been before the brief fallout of their group. Inside was a gift card, but that was cheating in Holden’s mind. He should have asked Kenna for help, but his mind kept him from it because he should be able to pick out a gift for his old best friend. “Guess you’ll have to open it to find out.”
Percy moves the bottle to the crook of his arm, sliding his fingers through the opening of the envelop in order to pry it apart. He huffs out a snort upon seeing the ridiculously frilly card, eyes rolling in a manner of subdued fondness, and carefully plucking out the gift card tucked inside. Cass Art. Not too bad. “Cheers. Could use some more canvas, actually.” He gives a quick nod in gratitude, slipping the card into his back pocket.

“I haven’t made an effort with you?” Theodore questioned, hearing only that out of Percy’s long and angry rant. He let out a humourless laugh and shook his head because wow. “I haven’t made an effort.” He repeated, more to himself and again, let out another dry laugh. “Listen, Percival,” he seethed, knowing it would probably get him killed but fuck. He was just so angry that he didn’t even know what to do besides let out an angry scream or storm off and neither of those would be beneficial. “Your head is so far up your ass that you’re so fuckin’ blind to see me trying to make an effort with you. In secondary school and even after our very forgettable one night stand.” Very childish. But he was trying to get kicks in wherever he could even though he just knew Percy wouldn’t give a shit. “But you’re so unapproachable with your pathetic, angsty teenage girl attitude that I don’t even know why I fucking bother. God– I can’t believe I liked you. God– now that’s bullshit.”
“I never said that you didn’t, only that I never asked for you to,” he reiterated, hands suddenly twitchy and anxious, the boy currently wanting nothing more than to escape this conversation and get back to his aimless sketches. He’d always found himself to be all the more irritable after an attack -- maybe because the vulnerability of it all, especially with it being done in such a public place, always left him rather scared -- and when Percy got scared, he got mean. “I see it plenty, actually. You just don’t seem to comprehend the fact that I don’t actually give a fuck.” And maybe his words were too venomous-- too personal or too over the top, but Percy always found it hard to stop himself when he really got going. “I don’t know why you do either, honestly, seeing as I’ve constantly made it rather apparent that I don’t want you to; that I don’t want anyone to.” His eyes are narrowed as he spits the words forward from his lips, his usual scowl made even more apparent by the action. “So don’t get pissy at me for ‘hurting your feelings’ when every one of you know good and well how I am by now.”

“Oh my god.” Theodore groaned, with a roll of his eyes. He was getting more wound up by the second and usually he would have just walked away by now– but because it was Percy and Theo had a lot of pent up frustration with him– he wanted to argue for the rest of the day with him. Maybe it would help him get rid of the last lingering feelings for him too. “It’s nothing to do with your fuckin’ book!” He was very tempted to smack the leather book out of Percy’s hand to prove that point but that would be childish and Theodore knew how much that book meant to Percy since he’d seen him lugging the thing around for years and frankly he just wasn’t that cruel. “Whatever, Percy.” He eventually sighed, shaking his head. “Just don’t be surprised when every person here gives up trying to make an effort with you.”
“Who says I want anyone to ‘make an effort’ with me to begin with?” He spouts back without any sense of hesitation, fingers digging into the sides of his sketchbook, but not enough to actually dent the material. “If you or anyone else doesn’t wanna deal with my ‘bitchy’ attitude, then they’re more than welcome to kindly fuck off.” He offers up an over-exaggerated eye roll just as a sigh slips past his lips. “Like-- what? Am I suddenly expected to offer my thanks to any failed secondary school friendship or one night stand that suddenly wants to ‘make an effort’ with me? Because it seems that nearly all of you have forgotten that I don’t actually give a shit about playing nice with people I’ve barely spoken to in the past couple of years. So, yeah-- sure ‘make an effort’ all you’d like. But don’t act like I’m suddenly gonna care when anyone stops trying. Because it’s bullshit.” And, well-- to be honest-- that’s probably not entirely true, but it’s not as if he plans on going back on that statement now.

As each of their suggestions were shot down, Ella’s eyebrows drew together mere seconds away from a pout. But not one to disagree with someone on their special day, Ella nodded slowly. “I–agree,” they said slowly, biting their lip as he continued on. Hands clapping together into a full on clasp Ella beamed, ready to convert the birthday berating birthday boy to the side of birthday glory. “It’s a celebration of your life on the anniversary of your first day ever. It’s so, so lovely, and it’s basically like a party in your honor for living through so much and just surviving. Just being a human being is an accomplishment and every milestone should be celebrated just like the first one because, because we’re all just collections of conscious stardust and the universe is amazing.” They couldn’t quite help the awe in their voice and if they thought they were even a fraction bit closer to the boy, nothing would’ve stopped them from holding onto his hands. Still, respecting boundaries, they shot the boy a concerning look. “Is there really nothing you want to do for your birthday?”
“Collections of conscious stardust?” Percy quirks up an eyebrow, as if thoroughly amused by the other’s statement -- though he has to admit that the sound of it did appeal to him rather nicely. “Just never figured it to be a bit deal, I s’pose. S’just the same as any other day of the year, really.” His shoulders lift up in a shrug, knowing he probably sounded every bit as pessimistic as usual. “Dunno-- sleep in, for once? Get some new canvas? Free baked goods? Lots of sex?” Another shrug. “S’not like most people have the capacity of buying anything outside of gift cards and poorly put together photo albums, so I’ve never been too keen on presents or ‘birthday outings’ to begin with.”

“Maybe in spirit, but not in age,” she retorted with a roll of her eyes at his look of reproach. It wasn’t like she could afford anything special, nor did she ever buy such sentiments as it was, but a birthday boy deserved a birthday gift and she who was she to deny that? “Don’t ask. I gave myself a paper cut wrapping with that stupid stuff, so the least you can do is open it and find out,” she told him, shoving her hands in her coat pocket as she watched him peel the wrapping off the intricate set of oils and charcoal pencils.
“Could’ve just used a gift bag, I’m sure,” he reminds the girl with a quick quirk of his eyebrow, already sliding his fingers along the edges, peeling off the tape and slowly pushing aside the paper. “--Oh.” Blue eyes instantly light up as soon as the wrapping is gone and the gift beneath is revealed -- though, as per usual, Percy keeps the majority of his expression stoic and unwavering. “C'est beau, merci.” He offers his friend a feather of a smile, fingers ghosting along the set with the utmost care.

“Yes, I realize that. I still keep hoping you’ll start. I could use a good drinking buddy,” he said, nudging his friend. He pulled a card out of his back pocket and frowned slightly. “It got a little wrinkled.” Handing it over, Holden waited for Percy to take it.
“Not gonna happen, but cheers.” He nods his head in thanks, taking the card being handed out to him with a look of skepticism. “A card?” His eyebrow quirks up in amusement, though he can’t help but feel a bit touched that the other boy made the effort. “This isn’t one of those terrifying ones that starts spouting out Justin Bieber whenever you open it, right?”

Kingston completely ignores the look cast in his direction in favor of taking note of the near smile that almost came to Percy’s lips at his words, which, he certainly wouldn’t have noticed if he wasn’t staring at them. How could he not, though? “Aw, but doesn’t it? ‘Oui, oui’, that’s French. You’d surely say that. And calling me your favorite person? Definitely something you’d do, gorgeous, don’t deny,” he drags on the false claim that the other boy had said what he told him moments before, a grin stretched across his face as he waves a hand dismissively in the air. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. You sound a lot cuter than I do trying to sound like you, I agree.”
“Dunno. You probably could’ve thrown in something a bit more advanced then ‘oui, oui,’ non?” He quirks up an eyebrow in mild amusement, head ducking down to look at the sketchbook currently propped up in his lap, effectively hiding the small upturn of his lips. Eyes scan over the sharp jawline and deep brown orbs of the face he’d been sketching before his attack. Upon realizing the likeness of the sketch to the boy currently seated in front of him, Percy raises his knees up just a bit more in order to shield the drawing from Kingston’s eyes. “Quit attempting to flatter me, poupée.” Then he’s leaning over to quickly rub his reddened cheek against his shoulder, as if attempting to scrub away the evidence of his currently flushed skin.

“don’t worry. i’ll send you a package of memory enhancers and brain boosters to help you remember next time. consider it my birthday present to you.” kendall boasted as he patted percy’s shoulder consolingly. “happy birthday, mate. you may be older than me, but i am still smarter.”
“Cute,” the boy deadpans, expression unimpressed -- though, admittedly, he is quietly amused by the other boy’s ability to snap back a witty response -- and eyes narrowed at the hand currently patting him on the shoulder. “Mm, smarter? Debatable. But people do tend to be more impressed with creativity these days, non? And, well-- is there really any doubt as to who outweighs the other in that area?”

“God, you sound like a fucking old man already,” she taunted, retrieving a medium sized parcel from her belongings and brandishing it between them. “I got something for you. But, I suppose I could return the gift or keep it for myself if we’re going to all but forget your nineteenth.”
“I’ve always been an old man, pretty much.” Percy offers up a shrug in response, eyeing the gift with a small look of reproach. He’d never been much for gifts -- the element of surprise causing him more anxiety than what it was likely worth. “Vraiment?” He takes the gift currently being handed out to him, eyes still scanning the neatly wrapped parcel that was now gripped between his fingers. “What is it?” Not that he expected her to tell him before he even unwrapped the present, but Percy was never one for not trying.

“Hmm… Well, I guess this probably won’t help much,” Holden commented, holding up a bottle of scotch with a bow stuck to the neck. “Happy birthday.”
Percy eyes the present with a quirked eyebrow, a whisper of a smile pulling at the ends of his lips. “You do realize that I don’t actually drink, right?” Though despite his words, he’s taking the bottle from the other boy, anyways. At least he tried.

“It’s your birthday?!” Ella couldn’t help the involuntary shriek their voice took on as the news practically formed a physical cloud in the air before the slight brunette and, quite like a sledgehammer, hit them full-on in the chest. Thoughtlessly dropping the overpriced Practical Law book, Ella Beharie’s hands shook excitedly as every single impractical thought raced through their mind as to how much festivities could be compacted into one weekend. “We have to celebrate. We could go skydiving or we could have our own little cupcake wars and bake a million cupcakes or even go paintballing.” The hype quickly going to their head, Ella blurted out a quick,” We could literally do ( anything ) you want.”
Percy winces at the shrill squeak that breaks through the brief bout of silence, almost as if on instinct. He huffs out a sigh as the other girl rattles on about celebration possibilities, though he’s nowhere near as annoyed by her presence as he would be if anyone else had put on such a display of excitement. “Skydiving is terrifying, I’m absolutely affreux at baking, and the mere thought of precious, and probably horribly expensive, paint being wasted by people chucking it at one another makes me ill.” His shoulders lift up in another shrug, mindlessly thumbing through the pages of his own novel, and pretending to focus his attention there. “I never really understood the big deal surrounding birthdays anyways, I suppose.”
