god some people on artfight piss me the fuck off

theres someone on there( i will not namedrop, but they were my classmate and seatmate in our art tech program this year) who i know for a fact traces in all of their art. Not just to practice, but finished pieces that are fully traced and then claims theyre original.

THIS BITCH has been following people all year and building a whole base of people on their account, and did 3 mfing attacks. 2 of which are obviously traced, with the excuse "i did this on my phone with my finger" which I KNOW THEY DIDNT BC THEY HAVE A SUPER NICE IPAD AND APPLE PENCIL THEY DRAW ON EXCLUSIVELY???

all 3 are so low effort its ridiculous. low effort attacks are FINE btw, not everyone can put in effort all the time; but if every attack you make is low effort, youre just not putting in the energy that the artists participating in this DESERVE.

meanwhile, they got 13 ATTACKS????? and theyre all BEAUTIFUL

this guy has 12 characters and they were all created within the last 6 months(I know, I WAS THERE FOR ALL OF IT), adn they're all traced off of pintrest. and honestly? they're characters with ZERO depth or love put into them. Every SINGLE one has a ONE SENTENCE description. they were fully created for aesthetic appeal bc this guy has NO ocs with stories. most of them are sona depictions of themself and their partner, with the exception of like 3 dnd characters theyve never used(and 2 that they had help creating from myself and like 2 other classmates, making them the most original ones)

I want to also say that I am in no way making this post out of jealousy or anything, Im perfectly happy with how my artfight went this year and Im very proud of my progress

it just sucks to see people who put in so little effort get so much in return. this is exactly what those people on tiktok were saying they were gonna do this year - get "free fanart" without doing anything. artfight is about trading art with each other out of passion and creativity

I mean, there never was a cat anyway, but step 1 to never feeling bad about the nonexistent cat is THEY DON’T FOLLOW YOU, so this would be a rude and inappropriate thing to ask a stranger + they aren’t even pretending to care about you. It’s reasonable to message someone you’ve interacted with for help; this, meanwhile, is unreasonable and entitled behavior. And there is no cat.

And for those well-intentioned but innocent people who might not know why the “private answer” thing is a particular red flag for vaspider or me - when you respond to these asks publicly, your followers will notice that the messages aren’t customised/personalised (and are, in fact, spam) and will catch on to not just the username doing it, but the format of the scam. They’re hoping to use the safe, closed-in, reciprocal-relationships, mutual-aid, signal-boosting, spam-doesn’t-happen-here feeling of Tumblr to get you privately invested in a scam that you would instantly dodge if it was in your email inbox.

In general again, don’t feel bad if you’ve fallen for one, they’re taking advantage of tumblr’s “innocence” - the platform is difficult to exploit like this, and the users aren’t used to scams - and they’re deliberately preying on your better impulses. Sense of urgency, implied sense of familiarity as if they’re a mutual, claiming it’s for a pet, camouflage among similar legitimate ways that tumblr users reach out, and (more recently) Keep This Private We Don’t Need To Tell Anyone About This, all combine to play on YOUR heartstrings specifically. You would spot this in five seconds if it came to your email inbox, you really would, it’s just that they’re using Tumblr’s own context cues to disguise themselves.

I get these once a week, sometimes with identical word-for-word copy-pasted phrasing. It's usually a cat. Sometimes it's "I personally need help and am also <grab-bag of marginalised identities> oh and also please keep it private."

The blogs are inevitably a day or two old at most, and have only reblogged algorithmically chosen stuff. I like working out whatever the prompt given to the bot was. My favourite was a blog that seemed fairly diverse at first, until you realised that everything was a black and white Aesthetique shot, except five Game of Thrones gifs had made it in because the lighting in them is so bad a computer thought they were monochrome.

I also ignore them for a week and then go back to them, and nine times out of ten they're already deactivated after being reported into oblivion.

Okay reblog if you’re an artist who STRONGLY PREFERS reblogs with commentary

People are apparently under the impression that reblogging someone’s art and adding a comment is frowned upon and that can’t possibly be true, every artist I know of sees a reblog-comment as like the ultimate definitive reward for their hard work.

Obviously don’t feel bad for NOT adding a comment if you’re shy or just don’t know what to say, but if there’s something you would like to say about a drawing you’ve liked enough to reblog, I’m pretty sure most artists crave hearing it.

Definitely re-emphasizing that ALL reblogs, likes, etc are awesome! So don’t feel bad/feel obligated to add something if you don’t want to, but don’t hold back if you DO wanna add something because you’re worried it’s rude.

I once read someone’s post saying “NEVER ADD A COMMENT WHEN YOU REBLOG SOMEONE’S WORK CAUSE YOU’RE TAKING ATTENTION AWAY FROM THEM” and it’s what prevented me from doing so for a time, until I became a creator of stuff myself and I can say that’s absolutely untrue. For one, I’m not a five year old who needs all the attention to be on me all the time. For another, the fact that someone would take the time to sit down and put real effort into writing something, whether as a comment or in the tags, means so much to me and is the most inspiring. Finally, you have a voice too, and you have as much right to speak it as I do :)
