Hey so. Can we all take a moment to fucking acknowledge and do something about the fact that India is currently proposing a bill in parliament that would abrogate the previous landmark decision made in 2019 that gave trans people the right to self identify as their gender? That we’re going to need approval from a medical board headed by a chief medical officer who will then report to a fucking district magistrate who will THEN MAKE THE DECISION TO ISSUE US A FUCKING CERTIFICATE WE NEED BEFORE WE CAN IDENTIFY AS TRANS???

Plus this bill is also attempting to legislate transmasculine people out of existence given that this amendment literally changes the definition of what it means to be trans and places an emphasis on traditional socio-cultural communities such as hijra, kinner, aravani and jogta (tranditionally transfeminine communities) and intersex people. While explicitly stating it doesn’t include people of different sexual orientations or self-perceived identities.

On the 13th of March, Dr. Virendra Kumar proposed an amendment to an already existing trans bill (The Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act, 2019). The original bill was inclusive and allowed self identification and easy access, the amendment however aims to narrow the definition of the term "transgender" in a way that excludes trans men and women, genderqueer people, etc. - those who 'self identify'.
