Berkeley, Stanford and a handful of other universities have experienced a marked uptick in the numbers of female computer science students. Those increases have also coincided with a reimagining of computer science classes, especially introductory ones. In some cases, that meant doing away with aspects of classes that seemed to specifically discourage young women.

If you are reading this, thank this woman. Her name is Grace Hopper, and she is one of the most under appreciated computer scientists ever. You think Gates and Jobs were cool? THIS WOMEN WORKED ON COMPUTERS WHEN THEY TOOK UP ROOMS. She invented the first compiler, which is a program that translates a computer language like Java or C++ into machine code, called assembly, that can be read by a processor. Every single program you use, every OS and server, was made possible by her first compiler.

I am a young woman, and I found a love for programming recently (last year). It is the only thing I have ever wanted to pursue as a career, but I'm terrified of what my future holds. I have a lot of anxiety and I was hoping you could offer some reassurance about this field. I'm not going to give up because I'm afraid of sexism, but I'd like some idea that there is hope for change. Is there hope? (And is there anywhere I can find people to talk to about this?) Thank you for your help.

Do not give up hope! Things are changing exponentially.

There’s a ton of momentum to get more women and minorities into tech. The world is full of all kinds of people, and these people need software, apps, gadgets, what-have-you to serve their needs and meet their demands.

Newsflash: a bunch of white dudes can’t always meet the demands of the entire freakin planet, which, by the way, is comprised of more women than men. We need thoughtful developers from all genders and groups if we’re going to make tech relevant and useful to EVERYONE.
