in an effort to relocate critically endangered black rhinos to areas better able to protect and grow the population, the animals are briefly flown, blindfolded and tranquilized, from otherwise inaccessible south african terrain to a waiting truck that will drive them to their new home.
from a population that used to number in the hundreds of thousands only a century ago, less than 5,000 black rhinos now remain. there are three recognized subspecies of the black rhino. there were four, but the west african black rhino became officially extinct in june. photos green renaissance/wwf
