I joined an anime challenge and it’s the first time I watched this many animes in one season, so thought I’d share my ratings and thoughts on the ones I watched, just for fun. Maybe it’ll be helpful to someone too. Since this will be a long post and I don’t want to make it longer than necessary, I’ll only put a link to the synopsis of each anime.
I’ll start with my top 10 favorite animes:
Overlord in general is a great isekai anime! If we’re talking Overlord II, I’m assuming you’ve watched the first season :D so I won’t talk about this much. All I have to say is that it’s just as epic as the first season and if you haven’t watched the first season, you should.
2. Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens
(synopsis) This anime was honestly so fun to watch. It’s really well-written. The characters have depth and each and every one of them are interesting. There’s literally no character I can think of that I didn’t like. A cross-dressing hitman, a genius hacker with a personality no one can figure out, a mysterious assassin, the hitman of hitmen the city of Hakata fears, openly gay characters who happen to be ‘revenge seekers’, an ordinary unlucky guy who keeps getting tangled up in other people’s messes, a young girl no one can underestimate… I can go on. It has everything, from comedy, to action and mystery and darker and more mature themes. I’d recommend this because of the amazing characters and pace. It will keep you entertained.
(synopsis) Honestly, there’s not much I can say about this. You need to watch it! It was obviously a very risky project. But successful! The art style and animation is very unique. Nothing like I’ve ever seen. Great OST and OP! If you’re an anime fan, you’ve most likely already heard about this. I do recommend it but I do not recommend it to everyone! It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea as it has a lot of gore and nudity and the bold, uncensored storytelling can make a lot of people uncomfortable! It’s a story about heaven and hell and demons after all.

(synopsis) I have to start by saying I hate mecha and robots in any story. I could never really get into it. It always bores me to death. And when I watched this, I was very cynical. It had a lot of fanservice which was just kinda funny to me (cause I’m too old for this shit! xD) BUT…it gets better. The story becomes really interesting and more complex. I was hooked! The animation and art is really good, (MOSTLY when it comes to ‘Zero Two’ xD but oh well, I’m not complaining!) This was really one of the best animes this season. In general it also has a very good rating so I recommend it. Especially if you like mecha.
5. Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody
(synopsis) (there was literally no gif for this anime (wtf) so i had to make one!) This anime was so good. The plot is similar to Overlord in many ways. It’s also an isekai (a programmer wakes up in some sort of rpg game, I won’t get into it, read the synopsis) and honestly? It’s almost as good as Overlord. There are a lot of differences of course. This one is less gorey and mature and again also has themes that might make certain audiences uncomfortable. For example, it’s harem (which i know for sure a lot of my female friends despise xD) and also themes like slavery. So again, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it was the only anime I binge watched enthusiastically to the end and I promise, ‘harem’ wasn’t the reason… (maybe just a little bit! :p). For people who haven’t seen Overlord, I’ll just say the plot and the fights are very interesting so if you’re a fan of action, isekai and video games, you’ll definitely enjoy this.
My overall rating: 7.5/10
(synopsis) This was one of the top animes this season. The story is way too soft and emotional for my taste personally and that’s the ONLY reason it’s not on top of this list but it’s definitely a must watch. The animation and art is really fantastic! I have no words for it. It’s been a while since I’ve seen an animation this good! It’s an epic and sad story about war and love and it’s very well written.
7. Junji Itou “Collection”
Let me just say the reason this is in my favorites and not listed as one of the worst animes this season, is ONLY because of Junji Itou and his amazing, genius horror stories! This anime is a collection of animated horror stories based on the works of Japanese mangaka, Junji Itou. I had high hopes for this. But the animation and art for this anime is REALLY bad and they skipped some panels here and there or changed the stories a bit. Still the stories are really interesting and to say the least, it was entertaining and some of the earlier episodes were actually good. I loved the OP song and video. But overall Junji Itou is a big name when it comes to horror stories, and his works deserved a lot better! Still, if you’re not planning to read the manga, I suggest you watch this because the stories are really interesting.
(synopsis) When I say this could have been a lot better I mean it could have been A VERY SUCCESSFUL POPULAR ANIME! When I started watching it, it immediately became my favorite. The story seemed rushed and I thought it will get better but… unfortunately it didn’t. They had a GREAT time-manipulation plot with very interesting characters with lots of potential and in my opinion they only used about 15% of that potential and managed to somehow fuck up the whole thing. The whole story is very rushed, the characters have no depth. But still, it’s not a bad anime, It’s just that I expected a lot more from it. It’s fun to watch and the whole idea and suspense is enjoyable. It also doesn’t have a low rating in general so if you’re a fan of smart plots and time traveling, give it a try. Did I mention the OP? Because it has a great OP.

9. Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san
(synopsis) This anime is exactly the reason I decided to write my reviews AFTER the season is over and not during it like some people do. I used to hate this anime. The first 3-4 episodes were really annoying to me. Both characters were irritating. A girl who bullies a boy and a boy who’s dumb as a rock and even though he’s always uncomfortable, for some unknown reason he keeps hanging out with the girl. Wth, right?! But… I’m glad I didn’t drop this anime because let me tell you, it’s fucking hilarious! The characters are kinda cute actually and the animation is so well done. The little details in animation and the great voice acting for Nishikata (by Kaji Yuki) makes it 100 times funnier. It doesn’t have a unique or interesting plot but it’s a great comedy so I definitely recommend it.

10. Koi wa Ameagari no You ni
(synopsis) About a high school student who falls in love with her middle aged manager. A very good anime indeed and this would’ve been on top of my list if it wasn’t for the ending! The ending was WAY too disappointing for me and for it to stay on top of my list. It has a good animation, it’s funny and despite it being romance (which I’m not a fan of), it didn’t bore me. I was always looking forward to the next episode. If there is a second season for this anime, this will probably go back to being one of my top favorites, but if that was really the ending then… too bad. But that’s just me being picky I guess :/
Numbers 11-15 didn’t make it to my ‘favorites list’ but they’re still good, relaxing animes that are fun to watch so don’t miss them:
(synopsis) This is a very relaxing anime about camping. Good for passing time. Funny and cute with a primarily female cast and it’s very educational if you’re interested in camping.
(synopsis) Another cute anime, this time about kids! :’) And it’s really not my taste but I admit it was good comedy. Saikawa has got to be my favorite character! And IF IT WAS my taste it definitely would’ve gotten a better rating so I think it’s really worth watching.

(synopsis) How to keep a mummy? Another relaxing, cute and fun anime about friends and their adorable supernatural pets!
14. A place Further than the Universe
(synopsis) This is also a good anime but I really couldn’t get into it. The whole story about Antarctica wasn’t really interesting to me and I couldn’t relate to or connect with the characters and primarily female cast animes usually bore me, but I’m sure it’s not like that for everyone so you should watch it and decide for yourself. It generally has a good rating.
(synopsis) Well… this really wasn’t my taste. xD And it’s the first idol anime I watched. BUT I heard from people who have watched other idol animes, that this is actually the best one. I didn’t catch up with this but from what I’ve seen the struggles of these characters seem realistic and that’s good I think. It’s also funny at times. So if you like idol animes, I think this is a good one, even if it’s not getting a great rating from me.

Aaand the award for the worst anime goes to:
(synopsis) this gets 2 out of 10 from me and that 2 is for the animation and art. The plot is horrible and tedious. The characters are too annoying. It is VERY slow paced. Too much talking (jfc), unnecessary and pointless drama and misunderstandings that just gets on your nerve. Very cliche. I can go on. Overall it’s a very pointless plot and anime.
I’ll finish this post by reminding everyone that animes are all about tastes. Certain animes that get certain scores from people aren’t necessarily bad or good. I’ve seen posts bashing on Devilman, Death March or Darling in the Franxx simply because those people were watching the wrong anime with the wrong demographic! What is not my taste isn’t necessarily bad. In the end you should always decide for yourself. ✌
