Here’s a gentle reminder to live life with a gentle balance. Don’t push yourself so hard that you completely spiral out of control. Don’t keep going until you’re only running on fumes. Take care of yourself, respect your limits, and recharge when you need to. ~na

I'm going to attempt to explain police brutality to my fellow white people through the lens of something we might be more ingrained in...the Catholic Church.
Remember a couple years ago when there was an explosive report about abuse left and right in the Diocese of Pittsburgh over many decades that was being deliberately hidden by the powers that be? Remember how mad and hurt people were? My own extreme Catholic mother stopped going to church because, through the report, we found out a priest at our home church had abused a family friend of my mom and dad's in the 90s. You may have seen the movies Spotlight or Doubt, which are about the same thing.
In the Catholic Church, there is systematic, intentional, institutional sexual abuse. It happens all over the country and all over the world. Higher-ups knew about it. Instead of putting offenders in jail and removing them from the church, the church instead just covered it up and stuck them at a new church. When they didn't do that, they threw a bunch of money at the family who was torn apart and just called it a day. Crimes are being covered up by fellow priests, the church, the diocese. "Good" priests were not outing the bad ones. There is/was a culture of silence within the church. There is massive cognitive dissonance when you see someone that is supposed to be a representative of God committing a heinous act. Even those rare cases that do make it to trial rarely result in conviction.
The institution of policing is doing the same thing. There is systematic, intentional, institutional abuse of Black and Brown people stretching back over many decades in every corner of this country where POC exist. Instead of immediately removing bad cops, their crimes and brutality are covered up by the system-- coworkers, the station they work for, and if not those two, the Fraternal Order of Police. The "good" ones are not outing the bad ones. There is a culture of silence when you see someone in the same uniform as you brutalizing someone. There is massive cognitive dissonance when you see someone that is supposed to uphold the law and "serve and protect" committing a heinous act. Even those rare cases that do make it to trial rarely result in conviction.
Stop putting people above the law. No one is infallible because of their uniform, whether it's a long robe or a blue button-down. Are all priests and cops abusive? No. But does the silence of "good" cops and priests and the institutional infallibility of the church and police make it a breeding ground for abusers? Yes. Are those abusers ever made to answer for their crimes or dealt with according to the laws of this country? Rarely. MLK said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." It's the truth. That's why we're angry. That's why we march. I may not have ever had a run in with cops myself, but I have empathy in my heart for people brutalized by systems that protect abusers, and people that just want cops (and priests) to be held to the same standard as the rest of us.
You were mad when you found out that priests were assaulting kids with institutional support and getting away with it. Get mad that police are assaulting Black and Brown kids with institutional support and getting away with it.
